Chapter Tobias
This is written in Tobias' pov and it is chapter four just in case you get confused :)
"Now or never, Stiff." I hear Max grunt.
It was just the two of us, nearly half an hour later from when we jumped off the train, which I am still trying to recover from. If they do things like this all day, then what was their definition of dangerous? Huh, who am I kidding? I don't think it exists in their vocabulary.
We stand a meter or so from the ledge, and I still don't know what lurks below. Feeling slightly alarmed, I worry about the chance that there will be some kind of huge harpoon at the bottom. Of course not, you dimwit, then why would that girl fall, back first into some unknown abyss?
Well, that's the Dauntless, and their whole purpose of life: Try to do dangerous stuff, that could ultimately kill themselves.
At least I think that's what it was.
"HEY! YOU EITHER JUMP OR JOIN THE FACTIONLESS, WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER?" He growls.
My eyes widen "I'll jump," I try to sound brave, but it comes out as a squeak.
"THEN GET ON WITH IT."
Taking a deep breath, I stumble towards the edge and climb up. His words echo around in my head. Now or never.
I lean forward and let the darkness surround me.
The air around me forces my stomach into backflips, and I yell.
I fall for what seems like hours but is only mere seconds, with my back parallel to the floor, if there is one. Suspended in the air, I flail my arms around in a futile effort to stop the developing feeling of terror. Stop. I just wanted it to stop.
However, it doesn't stop. I am forever stuck in my own world of dread and panic, enclosed in an envelope of fear.
All these thoughts come to a sharp stop as my body collides with what feels like a net. I am surrounded by darkness again, but before I can even process my surroundings, hands appear from out of nowhere me and yank me towards the light.

Watching them from a distance, I slightly frown. And by them, I mean the Dauntless. Them with their carefree laughter and cheerful personality and me as, well, nothing. I could never compete with such feelings. Such, happiness. I was just plain old Tobias. Nothing that special about a Stiff. Nothing special about me.
I sigh, wondering whether I had made the right choice because now, I have endangered myself and my fellow friends? Can I call them that? Will I be given a chance? They probably think I'm a freak, I mean, the first Abnegation-Dauntless transfer? What was I thinking?
Amar gave all of the transfers a tour of the compound a while ago, including the chasm, cafeteria and where we would be sleeping. It wasn't pleasant, he had stated, but you've gotta earn yourself the luxury.
Sighing again, I make my way to the chasm. I sit down, near the edge, with my feet dangling off the edge.
I stare at the lively current beneath me, the waves enchanting me. I feel a stinging sensation as a painful memory strikes me. Shivering, but not from the cold, a vivid picture comes to mind.
Lying sprawled across the grass, I stare up at the sky. The blades of grass tickle my toes. The only sounds I can hear are my own breathing and the sound of a distant train. For a while I just lay here, forgetting where I was, enthralled by the beauty of the clouds. I felt woozy, way more isolated than normal. Maybe it was the bread? Dismissing the thought I close my eyes.
The cool, spring breeze hits my face. It tousles my hair and a dark brown lock falls right in front of my eyes. I open them and stare at the curl. Attempting to blow it away, I feel a hand reach and tuck it right behind my ears. Looking up, I identify the figure. She caught me off guard, when had she arrived? She was a middle-aged woman, with olive skin, curly black hair and a hooked nose, almost identical to mine. Of course, I recognise her right away. How could I forget the look of my own mother?
She smiles, warm and gentle crinkling her eyes, making her look younger. Her eyes. My breathing slows. They were so dark that they were almost black.
A sudden splash of water spraying my feet lure me back to reality.
I glance back at them, knowing that it would take some time, but they would be my new friends. My new family. It hits me with a strange realisation that the clothes they wore were the same shade of my mothers' eyes. Shaking off the idea, I smile and work up the courage to walk up to them.
I spot the dark-skinned boy that I saw earlier talking to a girl about our age with brown hair, one of the dauntless borns, and I step towards him.
"Hello, Zeke right?" I begin.
He pauses mid-sentence and turns to me. A grin tugs at the end of his mouth "Oh, your that Abnegation transfer aren't you?" He says it kindly, unlike other people, who do so with disgust.
I nod and scratch the back of my neck, tensing.
His grin widens, "Welcome to Dauntless! And yeah, I'm Zeke, nice to meet you," His hand shoots forward to meet mine.
I relax and return the grin, "Thanks," Although I just stare at the hand. I internally panic. Holy cheeses what does he expect me to do? Should I fist-bump him? Should I start stroking it? Should I take his hand, grab it and squeeze as hard as I can to prove my almighty 'Dauntless' strength? That sounded so weird. Fridges, I can't do this, I've only been here for two hours. The guy's probably been here for two centuries.
Zeke stares at me for a moment. He squints, finally noticing that I'm uncomfortable. "It's a handshake. You literally shake my hand."
I nervously laugh and start to speak but was interrupted by the girl.
"It's alright. Go ahead. At Dauntless, feel free to shake hands give hugs and all that jazz." She laughs.
I bite my lip but take his hand anyway. Fortunately, I concentrated, so I didn't end up tearing it off.
"There you go! My name's Shauna by the way," This time she sticks her hand out.
"Tobias," This time I didn't hesitate.
"Well, Tobias, I can tell we are going to become great friends." A friendly beam. "Have you eaten lunch yet?"
"Um, no." Come to think of it, the last time I had food was in Abnegation. Even though it's just been a few hours since I've arrived, it feels like I've always been here. It feels like Abnegation was merely just a bad dream. Maybe I made the right choice, after all.
"Well? Come on, the food's not going to magically transport itself into your mouth is it?" She said, using exaggerated hand gestures.
I let her lead me to the cafeteria, Zeke trailing after us.
"Hey! Don't abandon me," He pouts. "Oh! You have to meet my sister and brother. You'd like them. They're annoying but I love them." His pout forms into what looks like a trademark smirk once I tell him that I will. Maybe he'll start a business. "Zeke's charming smirk ™". He might even charge 50 cents for every five seconds.
"Great! But, only after we've eaten, man I could eat a cow right now!"
Nah, probably a dollar.
I grimace "Cows? What do they taste like? Why do you eat cows? Are they creamy? Do you-"
"Woah, calm down there. I was joking, but yeah. We do eat cows." He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion as if he didn't know what to say.
Shauna chuckles as we enter the cafeteria. "And we are going to eat cows right now, looks like burgers are on the menu."
I trail behind them as they sit at a large table with what looks like their friends and sit next to Zeke and introduce myself.
A few of them spare glances at me, but the rest continued to eat and chat. It continued to be a tense silence, well in my view it was tense, for what seemed like years. Zeke and Shauna seem to have emersed themselves in a conversation with another initiate, leaving me to awkwardly sit by myself.
To pass the time, I zone my eyes in and out, blurring and distorting my vision on command. Fiddling with my thumbs, my mind wanders. I take the time to think. I get so into my thoughts, I hadn't realised someone calling my name. Instantly, I snap out of my daze. "Huh?"
I blink and focus my eyes onto the person right in front of me. The girl from the train.
