08 | Shots Fired
August 12th, 2023 | Saturday
A little over two weeks had coasted by, and Josiah had finally just finished shopping as her first week of college approached quickly. So far, she now understood what people were trying to preach when they expressed how different college and highschool really were. Not only was she trying to adjust to a new state and living circumstances, but college life as well and it hadn't even begun yet.
After finding out about the moment Paris and her step sister—who she hadn't met yet—she had been keeping a large amount of distance between the two of them. Not because she was angry, but because due to the small piece of information she had been slapped back into reality.
She wasn't as special as she made herself believe, and she didn't have the right to feel a way about it due to her relations with Micah, who had been growing very distant as time went on. She didn't even know what to do, or how to get through to him for the sake of their relationship since they were physically so far apart.
"Im homeeee!" The boy-like voice instantly caught Josiah's attention as she lounged in the middle of her bed, watching 'The Best Man; Final chapters' She loved the movies so she felt it was only right to finally finish off with the show that had been released three years earlier.
Pausing the show, she sat up and swung her feet off the bed trying not to seem eager. She was informed that her younger step-brother Justice would finally be arriving home from sleep-away football camp today. She couldn't lie, she was eager to meet both he and True to see what they were like. Opening her door, she walked out just in time to see him struggling with his duffle bags.
A girl who looked to be young, but older than Josiah was behind closing the door, and Josiah raised her eyebrows at how pretty the girl was. "Do you need help?" Josiah offered, scaring the life out of Justice since he hadn't picked up on anybody being that close to him. "Sorry did I startle you?" She went to grab a bag helping him.
"Who you? You Tre new girlfriend or sum?" He asked as his eyes grazed over the girl, seeming to check her out.
Shaking her head with a frown she went on, "Im Josiah." She stated evenly, with a slightly confused frown on her face. Justice looked to be fourteen or fifteen, and ear length two strand twists. His skin was a rich smooth dark color, even seeming to be darker than Josiah. "You're Justice right?" She asked just because he hadn't said anything.
Nodding his head he slowly followed her to where she had gotten familiar with where his room is. "You Josiah? I thought you was gon' be ugly, that's a boy name." He spoke bluntly instantly forcing a laugh from the girl pushing the door open to his very clean room.
"Thanks for the compliment, I think." She responded, sitting his bag down while he did the same.
"Where everybody else?" He questioned. He hadn't even seen his mother yet since his sister was the one who picked him up on her way from the airport where she had just finished her trip. She would be leaving in three more days to go back to Atlanta where she was attending her own last two semesters of college.
"I have no idea," She expressed truthfully, she believed they arrived earlier than everyone thought they would because she thought he wasn't supposed to arrive until around dusk time. It was very easy to make the exact same mistake.
"I need a good ass shower anyway." His language made her lips part. He looked so young to be cursing, especially because she didn't do it at all, but she just had to get over the fact that they were raised differently, and his cursing was probably only a thing when they weren't in front of their parents.
Josiah finally averted her attention to the girl who had migrated to the couch and was too engaged in her phone to interact. "Watch your disgusting ass language." True spoke up, but Josiah thought it was pretty hypocritical to use the same word in the sentence she was getting on him about.
"Shut up wit yo fake bougie ass. I hope Josiah aint like yo ass." He spat, annoyed with his sister like most younger brothers were, it wasn't out of the ordinary for the pair to talk like that. They actually argued the entire way there to the house, and still weren't tired.
"Shut the hell up." True crinkled her eyebrows, and finally looked at Josiah. Josiah realized the two basically shared the same face, but True was much lighter and had a caramel skin complexion instead. It made sense because they looked like Natalia so Josiah came to the conclusion that they didn't share the same father. "Hey," She bluntly greeted Josiah.
Josiah waved in return.
True huffed and started collecting her things. "My momma ain't even here so i'll just be back later, I gotta go get a hotel room for these next few days since my room has a new occupant." She stressed out loud, "I'm going out with my friends tonight, and I have to start getting ready now." She was just speaking in general.
"You're gonna get ready now? You don't want to stay a little longer to see if your mom will show up?" She questioned, watching her head for the door, ignoring the shot sent to her since she had taken over the room that True was referring to.
Shaking her head no, she opened the door. "She always late, worried about work and I'm not in the mood today because I told her I was on the way. I don't have time to be on her time today." She complained before slamming the door behind her as she left.
Josiah had no idea what to say in response to her small rant but Justice beat her to it. "She always talking shit 'bout my momma but don't even realize she just like her bougie ass, the only difference is her priority is partying instead of work...that shit worse if you ask me."
"Do you curse this much in front of your mother?" She asked, raising her eyebrows and crossing her arms over her chest.
He smacked his teeth and shook his head. "What fucking mother." He spoke in a disappointed tone, trying to hide the fact that he was hurt and she wasn't home to greet him. Most likely because of something work related. She was so predictable at this point, and that's what infuriated him even more.
With his towel thrown over his shoulder he headed for the bathroom without giving her a chance to reply. In the short time she had been there, she had knew exactly what kind of person Natalia was, so his statement didn't shock her. It just made her feel bad about the type of effect it had on her kids.
Blowing out a breath, she didn't know what to do in her position, so she just made her way back into her room making sure to close the door behind her. Flopping back on her comfortable bed, she picked up her phone realizing she had been added to a facetime call only a minute ago.
Clicking on it, she joined and smiled at the sight of Dayvoni and Sariyah having a causual conversation while Sariyah moved around her kitchen freely, looking for a fork for her bowl of pineapples. "Oh girl finally, we added you to see if you wanted to come to the club tonight for this boy birthday?"
They were old enough to get in, just too young to drink. Even then, that was nothing one of them couldn't solve by having someone purchase a drink for them. "The club? Who party is it?" Josiah was curious, but she was probably going anyway.
"Girl, do it matter? You need to turn up one more time for the summer before you clock in as a full time college student. We got you girl." Sariyah assured her. Josiah had never had a friend before, only associates she'd known due to school, or her mothers friends' children.
Sariyah and Dayvoni weren't what she was used to but she definitely felt like she loved them already. "Sure. Are one of you guys gonna come and pick me up? I still don't know my way around that much." She had curiosity in her voice as they smiled largely, happy she had agreed to join in with them.
"Yeah, I can pick you up girl just send me the address before eight." Sariyah informed her since before Josiah became their friend, she was the one with the car. Dayvoni was still saving up, but he was almost there so it wasn't that serious to chauffeur her friends around.
"What should I wear?"
Dayvoni looked up for a moment as if he were thinking. "Really it don't matter as long as you up to par. Bad bitch attire only or I won't be seen with you." He threatened. "What the girl on tiktok say? No Jordans in the club, heels." He recalled making Josiah burst into laughter.
" I don't even own a pair of Jordans, should I invest?" Her question made their jaws drop.
"Now sis, yo style cute as fuck but not one pair of Jordans is crazy. What about dunks?" Sariyah held a look of confusion that couldn't go unnoticed by Josiah.
Josiah shook her head shortly after the question. "Oh bae, we gotta take you to the mall." Dayvoni shook his head, and Josiah smiled. Dayvoni looked like one of the most masculine men you could ever meet, up until he started speaking. He didn't even have a feminine undertone, but the lingo he used most of the time easily gave it away.
He had a caramel skin complexion, his dreads in the front were ear length but the ones in the back made it to his shoulders, and along with his clear skin—he had top and bottom gold grills giving the masculine look he desired. Realistically though, he loved men. He was a big example to never judge a book by its cover.
Josiah giggled at his words feeling maybe they could help her broaden her style, so she wasn't too mad at it. "Just let me know a day, I have morning classes." She informed them.
Sariyah smirked, shaking her head at the two of them. "I'll pick you up at eight o'clock, boo."
Later that day, Josiah had gotten ready for the party as instructed, and now she was patiently waiting on her ride to show up.
Hearing the horn beep, Josiah raised her head to look out by the curb where Sariyah had pulled up. Josiah was sitting on the porch because she knew they were on the way and didn't want them waiting on her too long. She hated making people wait.
When she stood to her feet, the front door opened and Justice popped his head out. "Where you finna go, sis?" He had been calling her that for about six hours straight now, but luckily for him she liked it.
He liked her, because she actually took time to hang with him and she was excited for his arrival. They had played a few hard games, and he even taught her a few she didn't know before Norman and Tre got home and took over. They played the game with him, and Justice even promised he would eventually teach her to play.
While they did that she took her chance to get ready, but since Justice had realized she disappeared he was checking on her. "I'm about to go to a birthday party with my friends, but I shouldn't be gone for a super long time." She willingly passed him the information.
"If it's before twelve can you bring me some wingstop?" He questioned, but she was really unsure when she would be back. She didn't want to fail him, especially since they were getting along so well.
"How about I just Apple Pay you and you can order it off door dash or Uber eats." She offered, watching his face light up. She had remembered they exchanged numbers, and even instagrams, so they were all set with information.
Nodding his head he agreed before giving her a once over. "That dress a little too short. You ain't even out your teen years yet, it's going in the trash when you get home. And matter of fact be home by 11." He ranted quickly after taking notice of her attire.
She truly didn't think it was that short so she figured he was just being extra. "Okay big—little brother." She sarcastically rolled her eyes before turning around beginning to make her way down the steps towards the car where Sariyah and Dayvoni were patiently waiting.
Making her way to the car she slid in the back seat, and Sariyah spoke up as she sped off in her all black 2022 dodge SRT, gifted to her for her eighteenth birthday when she finally got the courage to get a license. "Who was that?"
Josiah shook her head, "Girl, my step brother. He was getting on me about my dress, I'm glad he couldn't see it was see through." She bursted out in laughter thinking about the lace material the piece of clothing was crafted from.
"Let me see," Dayvoni spoke eagerly, turning the light on to see the maroon mesh laced dress paired with the matching pumps. "You look good as fuck as always. If I was straight I would wanna fuck you." He expressed.
"You're gay and you still wanna fuck her. No difference." Sariyah added and he laughed at the truth.
"I want to, but I wouldn't know how." He added on to the joke prompting them to laugh harder.
"He scedddd of dat pussy!" Sariyah exclaimed, singing the song, before she stuck her tongue out, and Josiah laughed harder than she ever had before. The two were always cracking jokes and ah loved it.
"Yall two are one big mess."

"Where yo sister ?" As hard as Paris tried to force himself not to ask about Josiah, he could no longer help it. She had been ignoring him since the day in his room and it bothered him. He knew he shouldn't have told her the truth, but he also didn't want it to come out as a lie in the future.
He had been trying his hardest to hang at Tre's house so that he could "bump" into her, but things just hadn't been working his way. Now that they had finally made it there, he didn't even think she was home—which blew him.
Tre looked up with a perplexed expression. One, because he didn't appreciate him asking about his little sister. Two, because he had no idea, and at the mention of her he was just realizing she had somehow snuck off without his knowledge. "Must be being sneaky since ion know." He muttered picking his phone up.
"I got her location." He informed Paris, shocking him.
Paris remained silent watching him work his phone until he pulled up her location, slowly zooming in as his forehead creased signaling he wasn't happy with what he found. "Is this a fucking club?" He questioned trying to recall the location.
He passed his phone to Paris allowing him to see, and he studied the pin. "Yeah, 'bout twenty minutes away." He responded looking for a second longer before passing it back. "Fuck she doin at a club?" He voiced out loud.
Tre shook his head unsure himself. "I saw her, she had on this short ass dress. And it was see through, she think ian see but I saw." Justice finally spoke up, snitching on her. He didn't even want to, considering he was eating the wings she funded for him—but by the look on Paris' face, he knew it would be top tier entertainment. Sooner or later.
"See through?!" Tre blurted. "She a baby what the fuck." He was now stressing wondering what he should've done. He hadn't ever been in this position before.
Paris pressed his elbows into his thighs and he propped his arms on his legs to lean up. "It's that one nigga birthday." He pointed out, finally remembering what was occurring there. He was playing it as cool as he could, but deep down he was trying to bother him to force him to go get her.
He was going to thug it out and take his L until Justice included her attire. "Just leave ha' alone, let ha chill." Paris' voice was calm, and didn't show any signs of emotion.
Tre was pondering. "I definitely want to but that shit bothering me? Who the fuck is she wit?" He wanted to be fair and not too overbearing but this time he felt it was justified because he hadn't got to meet her so-called friends yet so he was wary of the situation.
"She old enough to make her own decisions." Paris countered, even though he completely disagreed with what he had just said. He was gaslighting his best friend, but since Tre knew nothing about him and Josiah he would never have a clue.
Tre nodded his head and sat back into the couch. "Right..." He tried to agree without overthinking it too much, and his right leg began bouncing. "It's a party, anybody free to go. I'm going." He stood from his seat to look for his keys.
He fell for it.
Paris stood up to prompting Justice to smile, Paris was too willing. It was obvious. "I wanna come." Paris put out, as soon as his best friend retrieved his keys. Tre only nodded, pulling the door to the back room open to let the two of them out.
"Aye don't hurt my sis though! She better than True!" Justice called out after them, and Paris shook his head at the mention of True. He couldn't stop thinking about if he hadn't accidentally let what slipped through his mouth slip. Apart from the fact that Josiah was smart enough to catch it.
"I'm not even gon' be on too much. I'm just gon' check the scene out, prolly won't even make my presence known." Tre was talking to himself, and Paris walked behind him letting him convince himself all he wanted. He didn't care what Tre did, as long as Josiah was in his eye sight.
Once settled into the car, Treyvon was able to turn the twenty minute drive into a ten minute one. It seemed like everything came into place because as they were looking to park, Jordan called Paris. While Tre parked, he answered the phone for his cousin. "Yo?" He spoke soon after he accepted the call.
"Where yall at, I thought you said you might pop out?"
Paris furrowed his eyebrows and looked over to Tre. "I got a bad memory bruh, remind me what the fuck is you talkin' 'bout." He glanced back at his phone although Jordan couldn't see him through the regular call. Jordan was always going places so Paris honestly couldn't keep up half the time.
"Mmcht, Tez party?" Jordan spoke hoping to refresh his memory. They had talked about it two weeks prior and never spoke about it again, so he understood why Paris may have had trouble remembering the small detail. He still wanted them to come though.
Paris let his mouth fall open, "Oh yeah we remembered, we just parked. Where you at?" He lied, causing Tre to look over at him in confusion since he couldn't hear what the person on the other side of the phone was saying to make Paris say that. "Aight we comin'." Paris responded to whatever his cousin was saying.
"The nigga party is Tez nem." He immediately informed his best friend, refreshing his memory.
"Ohhhh," He dragged out softly, running his palm down his mouth afterwards. "That shit still don't matter 'cause my sister dont know them." He opened the car door, and Paris couldn't help but laugh as he made an exit from the car as well behind his friend.
In no time the three had made it to the section where the party was being held, and Paris trailed his eyes everywhere in search for one person in particular. When he finally laid eyes on her, his heart stopped for a split second. Justice was right about her dress, but the fact that she was sitting in someone's lap made him feel a way.
Biting back his own emotions, he tapped on Tre and pointed towards her so that he could see her, His eyes never leaving her as he watched the unknown boy slither his arm around her comfortably, triggering her to lean her head into him. "Nigga who the fuck is that?" He questioned.
Paris shrugged since he didn't know, biting his tongue harshly. "Don't mess wit ha, you said you was just gon' check it out." Paris advised him, hating that he had to be the level headed one in the situation.
Tre huffed knowing that was the truth. "I did but that still don't explain who this nigga is, she got a whole boyfriend." He just couldn't wrap his mind around the scene that was occurring in front of him. It was so out of character for her to be doing something of the sort. He knew his best friend was right though, and he wouldn't rain on her parade.
Paris spared her one more glance watching her, a girl he assumed to be her friend, and the boy make conversation being carefree. He didn't let her go the entire time, and she never made a move to remove herself from his lap, leaving him to ponder.
"Dice?!" The voice made him scream inside his head, but he managed to stay cool and turned to see Treyvons older sister, True.
"Watchu doing here?"
She smiled at his words.
This was what he meant when he said he had too many girl problems. Kiarai, Lilah, and now True was back. The only girl he wanted to give him problems were Josiah, and she was the only one barely giving him the time of day. "One of my girls fuck with Tez, and im only here for three days so I had to pop out."
He felt relief hearing she wouldn't be here that long, so he only nodded in response, looking to see where Tre was then Josiah. "Im only gon' be here for three days, so watchu trynna do?" Her hand caressed him and he shook his head looking down at her.
"True, I already told you what that shit was wit us. I regret goin' as far as I did in the first place and all we did was kiss." Paris told her honestly, feeling as if it was the best policy. He had a crush on her heavily growing up, but once he was eighteen and she started showing interest, he realized he only liked her for her looks.
Tre didn't really care about the two of them, and Paris never hesitated to come clean about what happened between the two of them. He hated it wasn't the same case with Josiah because he would've taken his chance, but he understood how big the difference was.
Plus to be real, Tre had favorites and Josiah had moved to the top of his list in such little time so he definitely cared about her wellbeing more. To be fair they had real blood relations unlike Justice and True did to him. "You weren't saying that when you flirted wit me for years though." She countered.
True couldn't accept it for what it was. Paris flirted with her because she was older, and pretty. Even if it was only by a year, it was entertainment purposes for the both of them, but True just wouldn't believe that she had been rejected by anyone. She was way too pretty for that.
"Truthfully, I never thought it would get that far. You just wanna get fucked True, get out my face." He frowned looking around her, noticing Josiah was still having a grand time. Whatever her friend was saying had her dying laughing without a care in the world.
"And? So what? Im grown as fuck and I can fuck anybody I want to. You grown as fuck too so stop worrying about what Tre think, he cant dictate nobody but his fucking self." She spat, feeling angered. Paris always knew she didn't take rejection well and still decided to go through with it.
Running his tongue over his bottom lip slowly, he nodded in agreement. "You know what, you so fucking right. Preciate dat, True."
She smiled brightly, before moving past her to go sit with Tre and Jordan. " Wait, where are you going?" She called out to him, and he didn't respond.
Right before he sat down, a shot rang out causing everybody to duck, or begin rushing for an exit.
A various amount of shots followed after, sending everyone into flight mode, unsure what was occurring.
