Cold Feet (Peterick)
Pete was pacing back and forth in one of the back rooms. Brendon was sitting on the couch just watching him. Ten minutes ago he was trying to calm Pete down, but now he was waiting for Pete to be ready to talk.
Pete was supposed to be at the altar 20 minutes ago. His friends and family were waiting for him. Patrick was waiting for him. What was he doing now? Panicking! That's what he was doing.
"How do I even know if this is the right thing to do?" He'd been spitting out questions but didn't really care when Brendon replied, so the younger boy ignored the question.
"I already told you, if you need to go, I'll be your get away driver."
"This isn't funny! I don't know what I'm doing! I-I don't think I can do this." Pete's breathing was heavy and he ran his hands through his hair willing himself to calm down.
"Well whatever you decide, it'll be alright."
"How do you know that? You don't. Everything can go completely wrong and I can't handle that."
"You just have to have faith. That's what being in a relationship is all about, having faith that everything will be fine."
Pete groaned in frustration. He never grew up with faith. He grew up in poverty with uncertainty over everything. Patrick grew up the complete opposite. Why the boy decided he wanted to be with Pete was beyond him.
"What if I can't give him the life he deserves? What if he gets suck in the world I grew up in because of me?" Pete looked at his life long friend. Eyes wide with fear for the future. "He deserves more than that. He deserves more than me."
Brendon stood up quick and went over to Pete. He put his hands on Pete's shoulder and stared him in the eyes.
"Look, I've known you my whole life. I've seen your ups and down. I can tell you that no matter what you do, how bad you can get, Patrick will want to be with you no matter what. I've seen the way you look at each other. That's true love. I can't force you to go out there, but I'll be by your side no matter what you choose."
Pete bit his lip as his friend took a step back. He let his thoughts run around his head. Brendon stayed quiet and let him think. A minute later, the silence was killing Brendon.
"So, what's the plan?" Pete shut his eyes and swallowed a lump that formed in his throat. Pete had never expected anything good to ever happen to him. Now that he had Patrick, he feared he'd one day lose the best thing in his life. So of course, his mind told him ruin it before it was taken away.
"Let's get out of here," Pete spoke softly and looked up at Brendon. He watched his best man's face fall before nodding.
"Okay," he agreed out of obligation. They both made their way to the door. When Pete pulled the door open, he saw Andy, one of Patrick's groomsmen, on the other side ready to knock.
"Oh, Pete." Why was he here? Something must be wrong with Patrick. Pete felt a new sense of fear course through his body.
"What's wrong? Is Patrick alright?" He was ready to rush down the hall before Andy grabbed him.
"He's fine just nervous about the wait." Pete bit his lip nervously, feeling guilty. "But he wanted me to give this to you." He handed Pete a folded piece of paper before heading back toward the direction of Patrick's room.
He shut the door and Brendon leaned against the wall, watching him. Pete unfolded the paper and read the two words Patrick gave him.
It's okay.
Pete let out a shaky breath. Patrick knew what Pete was planning. That boy knew everything about him; how he acted, how he thought, how he functioned. If knew Pete tried to run, he also knew why. He knew that he couldn't be able to change Pete's mindset, but he knew that he could help Pete cope with the problem.
The boy was so sweet, so understanding and so.. so perfect. Pete looked over at Brendon through teary eyes. He rolled his eyes when he saw Brendon leaning back nonchalantly with his hands shoved in his pockets and a smirk on his face.
"How'd he do it this time?" Brendon asked in a cocky voice. Pete shook his head and showed him the paper. Brendon read it and chuckled. "Two words? That's all it took? Damn, he's good. That's gotta be some kinda record."
"Shut up," Pete chuckled and shoved Brendon lightly.
"So, you ready champ?" Pete looked down at the note and took a deep breath. He nodded up at Brendon.
"Yeah, I think so." Brendon smiled.
"Let's go get you hitched." Pete kept his head down as Brendon led him out of the room and toward the big room with his friends and family. He felt his nerves buzzing as the chatter of people got closer. Before he knew, he was at the altar, next to the wedding officiant.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience. We apologize for the long wait. There was a small emergency that needed to be handled. The problem has been resolved, so if you could please take your seats and the ceremony can begin," Brendon announced, instantly calming everyone. Pete looked up at Brendon with a smile.
"Thank you, man. I don't know how I could ever repay you." Pete really appreciated having a friend like him. Brendon still had on his smile. He straightened out Pete tie and smoothed out his suit.
"Watching you marry your soulmate is enough." Pete pulled him into a quick hug. "I also take cash or maybe a date with Patrick's sexy best man," Brendon said with a wink. They both chuckled.
When the music began to play, Brendon took his spot beside Pete. The groom took a deep breath and kept his head low as the flower girl and Patrick's groomsmen made there way down.
As the wedding march began, Pete slowly looked down the aisle. His breath caught in his throat when he saw fiancé in a pure white suit. He held a small bouquet of white roses in one hand and his other arm linked with his father's arm.
Patrick was smiling and giving soft greetings to the guests as he made his way to the alter. When he reached the end of the aisle, his father gave him a tight hug before handing him over to Pete.
Patrick handed his bouquet to a taller man who's hair was spiked up in a half mohawk in the back. When he turned back, Pete took his now free hands in his own.
"Hi," Patrick whispered giddily.
"Hi," Pete breathed out in response.
"I'm not gonna lie, I was a little worried for a second," Patrick said in a low voice. Pete chuckled nervously.
"I was too, but a wonderful man wrote me a note and helped me get out here to marry the man of my dreams."
"Hmm. Seems like a pretty neat guy." Pete's already big smile continued to grow.
"The best."
"Are you sure you're ready for this?"
"No, but I know with you beside me, it'll be okay." Patrick bit his lip to contain his widening smile.
"Let's do it then."
