29. Our Past Lives
First off, the cover of this book and the idea behind it are both fantastic. It is really wonderful that the author has envisioned something so wonderful, and I really admire the thought process that went into it.
However, the execution was slightly disappointing.
Historical Fiction is a very serious, beautiful genre that must be represented gloriously. The informal nature of the blurb, despite being nice and refreshing, does not suit this genre at all. It makes this book look more like a chick-lit novel, something I did not like as a great admirer of Historical Fiction.
The first thing I noticed about the writing in the first chapter was that the author constantly shifted between present, present continuous, and past tense, causing the reader to become frustrated. I am guessing that English is not the author's first language, and that is fine. There are many online courses one can take to help with tenses.
I did love the way the book started out though, showing the qualities of the main character and providing a good introduction to her. The dialogue could still use a little work.
I would be happy to suggest some books to the author that can give them an insight into how to write better.
Final Rating: 5/10
