CHAPTER 49

AVERY WAS SITTING WITH MASON, TALKING TO HIM ABOUT SPACE WHEN CLARKE CAME UP TO HER,

"I need to talk to you." She stated, pulling on her arm.

She gave Mason a pat on the head before standing and following Clarke into their room, "What's up?"

"The guard that we saw earlier that was covered in burns? Yeah, well, now he's not." Clarke stated,

Avery's eyes widened, "How is that possible?"

"I don't know, but we need to get into the med bay and see how they're curing the radiation." Clarke told her,

"But only patients are allowed in medical." Avery replied,

"Exactly."

The only way to get in was to be hurt or sick. But how do they both get in without seeming like they were trying to get into medical?

Avery nodded, looking around and grabbing a pencil, "Okay," She sighed, trying to hype herself up, "Hit me."

"What?" Clarke stared at her,

"We're gonna fight so we can get into medical." Avery hissed, "Now, hit me." Clarke threw a punch and Avery groaned, "Okay, that wasn't very fun."

Avery straightened and out of the corner of her eye spotted movement, "Give it up, Clarke! Finn's dead! Octavia's dead! Heck, Bellamy is dead! There's no one out there!"

Clarke threw another punch as the surviving delinquents rushed into he room. Avery held her bloody nose for a moment before slapping Clarke and pulling on her hair, "Sorry." She whispered to Clarke,

"Guys, stop!" Jasper tried to break them up but Clarke pushed him back,

"Stay out of this, Jasper!" Clarke growled,

"You don't get it, Clarke. We're safe here! We have food, we're not out in the cold... there's nothing for us out there." Avery told her,

"I'm not going to let them control us." Clarke lunged for her and Avery stabbed her in the arm with the pencil,

"Guard!" Some of the delinquents called out as blood spilled on the floor.

Clarke grabbed Avery by the hair and slammed it into the bedpost. Everyone gasped in horror. The guards rushed into the room and tased them, "Take them to medical." Avery heard before her vision went dark.

When she woke up, she winced as the lights were too bright, hurting her head.

Clarke looked over at the brunette, "Sorry, I shouldn't have smacked your head so hard."

Avery shrugged, "Hey, I did stab you. Sorry for that, too, by the way. I just wanted to make sure we'd be injured enough to get into medical."

"Well, we did." Clarke smirked, "But now we're handcuffed."

Avery noticed a file on the table next to the bed and spotted a paperclip. Using her free arm she reached over and grabbed it before bending it straight and picking the lock,

"Where did you learn that?" Clarke asked,

"What can I say? I was a mischievous kid." Avery smirked standing and taking out her IV before moving onto Clarke.

Once they were both freed, they stood and looked at the other patients. They spotted the guard that came in with radiation burns and Clarke was right. Most of the burns had faded.

"What is that?" Avery asked, looking at the tube that was attached to him, filled with dark red liquid, "Is that blood?"

They followed the tube and noticed it was attached to a pipe connected to the wall above them. The duo continued following it until it flowed out of the room. They pushed at the door that seemed to lead to the next room, where the pipe would continue, but it wouldn't budge,

Avery stepped back and noticed a vent, "So... crawling?"

The two climbed into the vent, sealing it behind them incase Doctor Tsing came in. They crawled into the next room, which was dark.

Avery climbed out first and paused in horror.

"What is it?" Clarke stood up beside her and stopped.

Suspended by their ankles from the ceiling were people. Nearly naked people. Tubes were attached to them, drawing out their blood.

The brunette noticed a tattoo on the female's side, "Clarke... they're Grounders." She whispered,

Avery was by no means friends with the Grounders, but draining their blood? That's harsh. Cruel. It was terrible.

They heard moaning come from behind them and the two girls glanced at each other before turning around. The room opened up behind them and there sat dozens of Grounders, all stuffed in small cages.

"Oh, my god." Avery mumbled,

It seemed like their safe haven was no haven at all.

Avery continued to stand there, too shocked to move, as Clarke walked towards the cages. Suddenly, she paused and kneeled down, "Anya?"

Avery rushed forward to where Clarke was, gaping at the Grounders as she did, "Anya!" She gasped.

The woman may have tried to kill her, but she didn't deserve to be stuffed into a cage and have her blood drained,

She tugged at the lock, "We're gonna get you out of here." Avery told the woman, "Clarke, go find something to pry this lock off with."

Clarke nodded and stood up before searching around the room. Avery turned her eyes back towards Anya. She had bruises covering her face. She looked... softer without the face paint. More human.

The blonde came back over with a metal stick and placed it into the lock before twisting and pushing, eventually breaking it. They opened the door and helped the woman out, "C'mon."

They heard the door on the far end of the room open and Avery pushed Clarke inside, "Go." She whispered, "Get back in." The three of them piled in and closed the door, watching as Doctor Tsing walked in.

She observed the Grounders that were hanging from the ceiling before wandering to the other side of the room. The sighed of her must've riled up the imprisoned Grounders, because they began pushing and pulling at the bars and groaning.

Doctor Tsing pulled out a blood bag before looking over at the prisoners. She wandered over to them, looking at all the cages.

Avery gulped, looking down at the broken lock. If she saw it, they were done for.

The doctor came down their aisle and Avery held her breath, hiding her face. Luckily, the Grounders reached for Tsing and freaked her out, causing her to back away and continue on whatever she was doing.

Once she led the room, Avery and Clarke scrambled out of the cage. They helped Anya out of the cage, "We gotta go, now."

"What about the others?" Avery asked,

"It's too many. We'll get caught." Clarke said as they wrapped Anya's arms around their shoulders.

Avery stopped as they approached the door that they thought led to the way out. Clarke turned to stare at her, "Avery? What are you doing?"

"You need to go." Avery stated, taking a step back,

"Avery, come with me." Clarke begged, pulling on her wrist,

She shook her head, "Clarke, someone needs to stay and protect them. They don't understand the danger yet." She hugged the blonde, "Go find our people, Clarke."

Avery bit her lip as Clarke and Anya entered the room and it closed behind them.

"May we meet again." Avery whispered,
