CHAPTER 43

AVERY RAN AFTER Jasper and the girl. They quickly made it to the elevator, "Clarke?" Avery panted, looking at the two,

"Clarke." They confirmed.

The elevator doors opened and they all followed the black-haired girl. They found the blonde girl by a large round door, about to pull a lever,

"Clarke, no!" Jasper yelled, "If you pull that lever, these people will die. Even a little radiation can kill them." He told her,

The dark haired girl ran over to a cage and came back over with a gun, "Don't make me shoot you."

"You don't need to do that." Avery told her before turning back to Clarke, "Clarke, just step away, okay? We can figure this out. But it won't help if you kill all these innocent people." She began to walk towards her friend, "Clarke. Don't do this."

Avery could see the fear in Clarke's eyes, "I don't believe them."

"Neither do I." Avery whispered,

"Why would they lie?" Jasper walked up to them, "Listen to me. We are safe here because of you. Both of you. We're safe now."

"Not all of us." Clarke cried,

"I'm the one that fired the rockets." Jasper stated, tears filling his eyes, "Should I not have done that? Clarke... when you pulled that lever, you saved lives. Don't throw that away by pulling this one."

Tears fell down Clarke's cheeks as she let go of the lever. Avery leaped forward and wrapped her arms around Clarke, who cried into her shoulder,

They heard footsteps behind them and guards ripped Clarke from her arms, "No!" Avery cried as Jasper pulled her away, "She's okay now! She's fine!"

Avery watched as they handcuffed Clarke's arms behind her back and dragged her away.

Maya brought Avery and Jasper back towards the room they shared with the other survivors, "She's just scared." Maya and Jasper looked over at her, "Clarke... she thinks we still have people out there. She wants to make sure they're safe."

"We'll bring survivors in." Maya responded, "Just like we did with you guys."

Clarke soon joined them for dinner and when they got back to their room, Avery walked around, making sure the surviving 48 were doing alright. As she walked over to Clarke, she noticed her drawing in the sketchbook that President Wallace had given to her. As she got closer, Avery noticed she was drawing and writing on the map of the mountain they were given.

"You still planning on breaking out?" Avery asked,

Clarke looked up at her, "I'll find a different way out. I won't risk everyone's lives, I promise."

Avery nodded and sat down next to her, "I believe you, Clarke. I want to find our people, too."

"So you'll come with me?" The blonde asked,

She sighed, "That's the thing, Clarke. We have people out there, yes, but our people are in here, too. Do I trust them? No. And that's why I think one of us needs to be here for when things go south."

"What if something happens? Something bad?"

"Then let's hope you find our people and rescue us quickly."
