CHAPTER 26

THE NEXT MORNING, Avery was carrying some logs over to the main fire in the center of camp when Bellamy walked over,

"We're going to check out the wreckage. Want to come with?" He asked, putting his hands on his hips,

"Nope." She responded, dropping the logs next to the fire pit,

Bellamy sighed, "Look, I know you're not happy with me-"

Avery turned around and glared at him, "Not happy? Not happy?! Bellamy, I'm furious." She walked up to him, "I had it covered. We were working it out."

"They murdered three of our people, Avery. Not to mention stabbed Finn and Jasper!" He hissed,

"We trespassed on their land! We kidnapped and tortured one of their own." Avery stated, "We wronged them just as much as they wronged us." She sighed, "I'm not going out there. Who knows what the Grounders are going to do if they see us." She began to walk away, "Good luck."

Avery spent the rest of the day running camp, since Bellamy and Clarke were gone. Soon it got dark, and Avery stood at the wall, peering through the gaps to see if the group was back yet.

Behind her, Jasper was talking about his experience at the bridge. Avery sighed in anger, trying to calm herself down before she snapped at him.

"Fear is only a problem if you let it stop you, right?" Jasper grinned at the girls around the fire,

"That's not even his line. Finn said that." Octavia scoffed from between Avery and Monty,

"I saw the grounders in the trees. It was like nothing I ever felt. Pure animal instinct took over. One pull of the trigger, two grounders dead."

"'Pure animal instinct'? More like pure pants-wetting panic." Octavia joked and Avery smiled,

"You don't really know what you're made of until a moment like that you know when it's kill or be killed and there's just nothing between you and the tip of the spear." Jasper continued,

"Ok. This has to stop." Octavia went to go confront Jasper when Monty pulled her back,

"Come on. Let us have this."

"'Us'?" Avery asked, crossing her arms,

"Look at him. The boy is a folk hero. They even gave us a bigger tent." Monty stated,

A loud clattering noise came from beyond the wall and everyone stilled,

"Somebody hit the trip wire!" Connor exclaimed

Avery stood to look beyond the wall with the guards, who looked through their scopes, "I don't see anything."

"Are you sure it was the trip wire?" Derek asked,

"I got nothing. Connor?" Derek replied,

"Nothing."

"Something moved."

"There, there, there!" Derek began firing and Avery pushed his gun away,

"Hey! No firing until we know for sure!" She exclaimed, "It could be Bellamy and the others."

"Think I got him." Derek stated,

Avery sighed, "Let's go. Connor, Derek, you're with me. Monty, keep a look out."

Octavia followed and the four of them stepped outside the wall and over to where Derek fired the bullets. There was a figure on the ground and when Avery reached down to touch them, they backed away.

"No way." Derek stated, shining the light of the torch on them.

Avery gasped, staring at him. He was covered in cuts and bruises, but it was him. It was Murphy.

"You're lucky it was me who found you and not Bellamy." She stated, putting her hands on her hips, "Boys, bring him to the drop ship."
