Two girls in Sunday dresses were sitting under the shade of a humongous acacia tree. It provided enough shade to cover both of them.
The girl in a high ponytail was holding a small camera. She was taking random pictures of trees and people in the park from that spot and the girl beside her watched in fascination.
"Why do you take pictures, Maria?" Asked the girl perched upon the shoulders of the girl she was asking.
"Fi-fi, get down, you're making my shoulders hurt," replied Maria Angela as the girl above quickly retracted.
"You didn't answer my question," Sofia, or Fi-fi, as called by her friend, huffed.
She crossed her arms over her chest and sat a bit farther away from the girl, purposely making a loud "Hmmph!", with her back turned.
Maria Angela chuckled at the audible reaction of her friend and brought down the camera from her face.
"I dunno. I just like to," she said, looking far off into the distance. When she heard a sniff, she turned around and had a very concerned expression painted on her face.
"Fi-fi?" she called out but she only got another sniff in response.
She set her camera to the side and went quickly to the child's side, but was not too close as to touch her.
"Oh, Sofia," Maria Angela gasped in guilt and held her hands to cover her mouth. "I'm so sorry for making you cry!"
The sniffing stopped for a while when Sofia turned her head to look at her friend. "I-it's not your fault!" she hiccuped. "Please, it isn't!"
Maria Angela looked back at her, "But why are you crying? I'm sorry I didn't answer your question immediately. And you can stay on top of my shoulders as long as you like, no matter how much it hurts!"
Sofia only shook her head. "It's not that..."
"Then tell me, Sofia, I can make it right!" the girl insisted, guilt almost eating her alive.
"It's just that," Sofia wiped her eyes before continuing, "you're always taking pictures with that camera ever since you got it. It's like you like it more than playing with me."
Maria Angela was quick to respond, "No, no, of course it's not like that! I love taking pictures but I love you and having playtime with you more."
She got closer to the girl who was trying to stop the tears streaming down her face and caught one falling midway.
"You," the crying girl said, dazed, "love me?"
Maria Angela smiled and took the sniffing mess into her arms. She hugged her as tight is she could and whispered in her ear, "Of course. You're my bestest friend." Sofia hugged her back
They pulled away and Sofia was smiling now.
"Best friends for forever?" Maria Angela asked, brushing the last tear that went down her friend's cheek.
Sofia sniffed a bit before answering, "Or course! Even if there's some time beyond forever!"
"You mean five ever?" The other girl giggled as she kissed Sofia on the forehead.
They both laughed and just sat there enjoying each other's presence.It was the perfect day for the two of them. The breeze was blowing ever so slightly, brushing up on the grass that cushioned the backs of these two girls. They were so close, still so young and innocent. They never feared the possibility that one day, they would separate.
But of course, things could only last so long.
"Hide and seek?" Maria Angela asked. Sofia nodded quickly smiling. They loved playing this game. They've always played it ever since they could remember.
"You hide and I count," Maria Angela insisted with a giggle.
Sofia then went to find a place to hide and made sure her body was well hidden from the eyes of the other girl.
Maria Angela started to count, and Sofia could barely hold in her loud giggles that were giving her away too much.
"Ready or not!" the 'it' screamed.
Unfortunately, before she could take a step further from her counting spot, her mother called out.
"Maria Angela!!!"
She turned around, her mood visibly deflating as she called back, "Coming!"
She looked around, wanting to give her companion a proper greeting before she went home.
Sofia was wondering what her friend was doing that she took so long. She crawled out of her spot under the slide just as Maria Angela was walking towards it.
When Maria Angela saw this, she came running towards Sofia, "I have to go now. Mama's calling me."
Sofia, clearly upset, pouted and said with her voice almost cracking with the urge to cry, "Aww, are you coming back?"
Maria Angela smiled. "Of course! I'll be back, soon you'll see!" She replied as she hugged her friend tight. As she did so, she had a single tear drop from her own eyes.
She lets go and kissed her forehead again. She runs to her mom, "Bye!"
Sofia stood there.
She waited.
And waited.
And waited...
She never came back. For what seemed like forever, Sofia felt alone. She felt like the world was ending for her. She felt like nobody was there anymore. She was her only friend, the one who's been there.
A few years later, she slowly forgot about her friend. She made new friends and met other people.
She was walking around her school on the first day. She was a senior now, she'll be in college in a year. She suddenly bumped into someone. Despite it was her books that all fell to the floor, she apologized anyway.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," She groaned, annoyed at herself for being such a clutz.
It was a guy she bumped into and it was a few seconds before he spoke up,
"It's fine." He helped her pick her books up. "Here."
She looked at him as he bent down.
"Do I know you?" She asked, curious that she saw him from somewhere.
"I'm Connor," He said as he stuck out his hand.
"Mhm, I'm Sofia," She said as she shook his hand.
They stayed in silence for another few seconds before Sofia spoke up.
"Wanna get to class together? It's kinda awkward to just walk in there and come in then everyone would look at you," Sofia said. Connor nodded, not saying another word, and they walked together. His attention was reverted as they walked in their first class, however. He caught sight of a cute boy walking inside with them.
He nudged his companion, "Hey, uh, you know that guy?" Connor nonchalantly nodded at his direction.
"Uhm..He's Evan, Evan Hansen," she answered, quite unsure. "Why?" Sofia asked, slightly curious as to why Connor had the sudden interest.
He just shrugged, "Nothing, just wanted to know."
The class started. Connor got really bored and decided to doodle on his notebook. He didn't know what to draw so he looked around for something to draw. He didn't even realize he was drawing a certain figure with a very notable cast drawn on one of his arms. Tiny hearts were scattered all around him. Sofia was beside him and could see what he was drawing, but she kept quiet about it.
She didn't want to ruin his privacy. She already did, but she'll just keep it a secret. Unless Connor told her what he really felt about the boy with a cast.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back to about three months in time, before school ever started, another meeting took place.
Maria Angela was a lover for pictures. She loved taking pictures of everything. Everything she found so pretty, beautiful, and serene. From people, to scenarios, to volcanoes exploding, to trees. She kept an old Polaroid with her always and she often went out on walks with her DSLR slung over her neck, ready to snap a photograph whenever she pleases.
She uploads what she deems decent online on Instagram and with that, she had gained a fair amount of followers. She never once captioned her photos, making her account a seemingly mysterious one.
One thing noticeable when you scroll through her uploaded favorites, or just through her raw files of her taken photos, was that she always took pictures of trees. She posts at least once or twice a week of a picture of trees.
Sometimes it featured the haze of the sun by the leaves. Sometimes it was just a panorama shot of trees lined with a sort of transitioning gradient with each individual plant. Her favorite times of the year to take shots were spring and fall.
She gets to capture the scene of losing life and gaining it. Of course, she'd capture shots of those in animals as well, but in her opinion, it was trees that expressed it best.
On the other side of the neighborhood was a boy about the same age as she was, scrolling down his phone, looking for things he could get for his wallpaper. Evan got a new phone, his mom thought it'd be a good idea after he got a cast.
His cast wasn't exactly the easiest to have around. It was a reminder of a failed attempt. It reminded him that in even in death he'd be a failure. He was going to start therapy soon. A bit too soon for his liking. But he was going to attend it anyway, just to see his mom feel alright.
He wanted his search to be not much of a hassle, so he started with Google images. He found some pretty pictures but none of them seemed to go with his taste. His next option was to go on Instagram. He typed in hashtags of trees and saw loads more stuff he didn't really feel could be something he'd constantly face on a rectangular piece of technology.
He kept himself insistent until he saw a picture that was certainly something that sent chills down the center of his back. It wasn't eerie in a bad way, but the way it was perfectly angled almost disturbed him.
Although, it's actual effect was quite the opposite. The picture contained a nice angle of a tree from the bottom, ant's view, basically. It gave the feeling of being small, yet the feeling of one-ness.
Evan was never one to look at the captions posted on Instagram pictures, but he did now. He looked at the caption and was slightly, only slightly unnerved at the fact that the one who posted it wasn't the owner of the said picture.
It was stated that the owner of the picture was unknown by the up loader so he proceeded to the content provided by the comments. There were comments saying that "it's that famous photographer who did it" and when he'd search up the names mentioned, none of them had pictures similar to what he'd just seen. At last, he came to a last comment saying that this was taken by a person of the username @itakepictures.
He hurriedly tapped on the differently covered tag and it lead him to a very pleasing profile.
After hours of scrolling down, and with each picture he saw was fitting of being constantly seen on his phone, he decided to hit the follow button.
Back to the other side of the neighborhood, Maria Angela just finished dinner and waited until it was around 8:30 pm, a time where no one would possibly barge into her room. She was finishing uploading another batch of her professionally taken shots. When she was done, she headed to the bathroom and locked the door behind her. She went to the toilet, bent down, and breathed in.
"C'mon, this is for your own good," she whispered to herself daintily.
With that, she forced out the contents of her mother's delicious new recipe of vegetable soup down the bowl. After repeating that for another two times, she sat on the floor with her back against the tiled wall, facing the bowl as it flushed out the previous contents of her stomach.
You'll be beautiful as the flowers, plants, and trees in the pictures you take.
You'll be flawless, sexy. Everything you'd want. Everything she would've wanted.
"Beautiful," Maria Angela whispered to herself, touching her lips, before standing up slowly.
She brushed her teeth and combed her hair before unlocking the door and getting out.
She checked her laptop for any notifications and noticed a new follower. Now, usually, her followers would comprise of people similar to her - photographers, or people who run aesthetics on Tumblr™.
All the same, with professionally taken photographs as their profiles and usernames they probably put too much thinking on. But then there were the unusual normal people picture profiles that she usually clicked on. She noticed how each of those types of profiles came up with the same type of pictures.
Although, she wonders if there would ever come a time that there would be someone different. Someone who doesn't post pictures at all. She never saw one of those in her list.
Out of interest, she clicked on the notification and started to analyze. The avatar it had was a simple solid background with a light shade of blue. She definitely hadn't encountered a follower like this profile ever.
The username was e_hansen. His bio had nothing in it, no pictures were posted, no pictures were tagged of him, and he only had four followers, and they weren't even the legitimate accounts, they were the "freefollowersreadmybio" types.
For some reason she hadn't had the faintest idea about, she felt curious as to why a profile like this had suddenly come across her profile.
She thought of messaging him, but then thought it was too weird. She did it anyway.
She went to the direct messages and typed in "e_hansen" in the field of the recepient.
itakepictures: um hi?
She tapped her long nails on her laptop as she waited for a reply.
e_hansen: hello?
I mean
Hi!
I like your pictures!
They're cool
Especially the ones with trees in them
Not that I'm saying that the rest are bad
Oh god
I'm sorry
I just really like your pictures
You must think I'm a weirdo
AKJSKASKAK
SORRY
Maria Angela slightly giggled, amused at the interaction, but immediately regret it, as her stomach slightly ached at the movement.
She sighed and replied.
itakepictures: Yow dude
Chill out
Thanks for the compliments on the pics
Really appreciate it (:
e_hansen: I never expected you to message me back after that
itakepictures: What do you mean?
e_hansen: Usually after I speak like that
People tend to just
Nvm
Maria Angela raised an eyebrow.
itakepictures: don't leave me hanging
C'mon
I'm open
e_hansen: U sure
Bc this is pretty boring
And you might think I'm the weirdest dude ever
itakepictures: nah that's impossible
e_hansen: how is it imposoblke
*impossible
Sorry bout that typo
itakepictures: nah it's cool
But if we're talking about weird stuff
Have you ever heard of Uncle Grandpa?
e_hansen: okay you have a point
But like
At least he could actually talk to people
Maria's curiosity got fired up.
itakepictures: so wait
Are you saying you're mute?
e_hansen: NO
No no that isn't what I mean
I have social anxiety
itakepictures: Ohhh
Like
An introvert?
e_hansen: yeah
But much worse than an introvert
Like
I just can't speak tbrough one whole sentence without stuttering
Maria Angela looked at the message, thinking of how exactly she was supposed to reply.
e_hansen: *through
okay it's fine if you don't reply
I completely get it
itakepictures: nah
Well
You see, I didn't know exactly how to respond to that
But if it makes you feel better
Maria Angela's stomach started to ache once more. She paid the pain no mind. Her throat's soreness did annoy her to some extent.
itakepictures: I throw up whatever I eat
Except for slushies, tho
I never regurgitate slushies
And that somehow started an unexpected friendship. They changed numbers and were a bit hesitant in contacting each other at first, but once they found out that they were basically on opposite sides of the city, Maria Angela insisted on meeting up.
In a park.
Full of trees.
And that day, Evan had hope for himself.
Maria Angela told Evan she was transferring schools and then they both found out it was the school where Evan was attending.
"At least I won't have trouble on where to sit lunch at," she replied as she slurped up her slushie that she bought for herself.
~~~~~~~~ Back to school ~~~~~~~~
The class ended. Sofia and Connor decided to head outside. Connor following not really closely behind Sofia, since he wanted to see more of Evan. They soon went to the cafeteria, and they sat together since they didn't really have any other people to sat with.
Normally, Connor wouldn't have cared if someone would walk up to somebody else, specifically the boy in a cast right now, but when he saw a completely unfamiliar face walking side by side with him, he did give a care.
-
"So, Jared Kleinman sits with you during lunch?" asked the girl who was completely unfamiliar to Connor.
Slung around her neck was one of her treasured DSLRs. She was told that there was a yearbook committee, she was looking forward to get a position for a photographer or something.
Evan answered her without any hindrances, "Y-yeah, he's - uh, kinda l-loud as a seatmate, th-though. But don't tell him I told you that, though!"
The girl only laughed, "Oh, Evan, he won't be too noisy around you if he's around me."
"W-what do you mean?" Evan asked, confused.
"You'll see," she replied with a devious smile.
Walking further into the cafeteria, the girl with the DSLR slung around her neck subconsciously put an arm around her stomach.
She only bought a bottle of water, an apple, and three pieces of biscuits Evan said he found delicious. He looked skeptic when they arrived at an empty table, seeing that those were the only things on her tray.
She only looked at him and rolled her eyes, "I'll only throw them up later, anyway."
A few minutes in their friendly lunch, Jared Kleinman came into view and almostly instantly backed away at the sight of the girl.
"And what the hell are you doing here?" He asked, fear and confusion laced in his voice.
The girl with the camera looked to him with a smile. A scheming one.
"Oh, Jared, my dear cousin!" she stood up and tackled the boy with glasses.
Jared froze.
"Maria, what are you doing here?"
Maria Angela put her hands on her hips, "I'm studying here now, you lame*ss. Show a bit of welcome to your favorite cousin."
"You're my only cousin," Jared grumbled.
"Exactly my point!" She turned on her heel to sit back down on her seat.
Jared scoffed at this, "You hang out with this limp noodle?"
Although she knew he meant for it to be a harmless joke to name call, Maria Angela scowled.
"Don't talk about him like that, loser," she shot back and she felt Evan flinch slightly.
She shot him a look that clearly said 'don't fluffing talk about him like that or the whole world would talk about you having to eat bathbombs to get laid'.
Evan noticed how this time, Jared flinched and he stared at the scenario with confusion.
Jared had a cousin?
And it just so happened to be Maria Angela?
Jared threw his hands up in surrender. "Alright, alright! Fine. Take the noodle."
Maria Angela glared at his back as he slowly disappeared from view. She then faced Evan with a sweet smile, completely contrasting to what emotions she emitted just before.
"I guess no one would be calling you a 'limp noodle' anytime soon."
-
Connor was still glaring at the scene far away.
He didn't know why exactly he was glaring. Was he glaring at the girl for talking to the boy in the cast? Is he glaring at the boy because he willingly talks to the girl?
Who was she anyway?
But damn, were the boy in the cast's nervous laughs and smiles fascinating to look at. It was so much like a puppy trying to decide whether to faint or to move around like a hyperactive being.
Sofia wondered if this was really how Connor was, glaring at other people he just doesn't like for some reason for an unusually large amount of time.
She decided to look wherever he was looking.
Her heart started racing, and she was confused why.
A girl, a few feet away, caught her eye. She made sure it was what Connor was really staring at.
"What made you hate the poor girl so much?" she asked her companion, trying to shake off the feeling that was nagging at her.
A sense of familiarity.
"Huh?" Connor responded, snapping back his attention to his companion.
Sofia rolled her eyes and nodded to the direction they were both looking towards to just previously.
The girl she noticed had her hair tied up in a ponytail, but not much hair was left for it to cascade down her shoulders. Somehow, there was a very vague image that flashed before her eyes before quickly disappearing.
"She seems..." she thought about it. She hadn't seen her before but somehow, she was just too familiar for her not to know. "New."
"Yeah," replied the boy beside her, looking at the scene with an expression of disinterest, "I haven't seen her before."
Sofia looked back at the scene and saw that the girl had a camera slung over her shoulder. It triggered the sound of faded laughter in her mind and she froze. She quickly shook her head, trying to get rid the feeling.
She did know her, she just couldn't remember.
She observed her talk to Evan Hansen, the boy Connor asked about.
"Oh," she said in realization, "you weren't staring at her, you were staring at the guy she was talking to."
She saw him visibly clench his jaw and knuckles, so hard that they turned white. In a state of worry and slight panic, she gulped and tried to stay still to fight the urge to back away.
"I didn't mean to-"
He scoffed, cutting the girl beside him off, "Yeah, it's cool."
She noticed the way in which he spoke through gritted teeth. She noticed the way he cast one last look of what seemed like longing at the scene and shaking his head after.
