Chapter 8

Darsh's POV:

I kept on fidgeting my fingers as I awaited his presence. The shock I received made all my sleep vanish away. It's not only about my grandfather's demise one month ago, but also the demise of my grandmother a year ago which came more shocking.

Grandparents, I thought. It's been years since I have seen them or even heard about them. We never approached them because of their hate towards us, especially towards Maa. They resented her for the death of their only son, my late father, and gave her the worst punishment ever.

After the death of my father, I met them only once and that visit didn't go well too. They wanted me back with them for the only reason of carrying their bloodline and surname and for that I had to give up on my Maa.

That's when they died for me. Failed to persuade me they tried to lure my brother but received the same reaction. And eventually, all the ties got loosened and we even forgot about them. Not completely though.

It's never easy to let things go. I believe what goes around comes around. Be it things or persons we can never remove them from our lives once they entered.

My chain of thoughts broke when he came calmly and sat across the table. Our Lawyer.

"How long have you been waiting?" he asked me with a pleasant tone.

"Since the time you delayed," I replied curtly. I don't know why but I have had slight resentment towards him from a young age despite all the help he did with legal work.

"What to do, your grandfather died suddenly leaving a will in your and your brother's name. He could have died later, right so you wouldn't have to wait for me," he replied with a sarcastic chuckle.

And one of the reasons why I resent him is for this tongue of his which has no filter. He was a close associate of my maternal grandfather and that was the reason why we went to help him in the first place that acquaintance is going on till now.

Before I could say anything the waiter came and asked for our orders. He ordered coffee for him and I didn't ask for anything. After the waiter left he started taking out some files from his back and these few moments helped me to calm down and prepare myself for what was coming up.

"So when he died?" I asked him to get back to work.

"Last month on the 9th."

"How?"

"Old age, Darsh. After your grandmother died he left his house voluntarily and joined an old age home. I guess he must have sensed that his time has come. That's why he wrote this will, his property on both your brother's name so that no other greedy relatives will take them."

Saying so he handed me over a polythene file. I opened it to find some property documents, fixed deposits, and some documents about gold assets. Some were written on my name and some on my brother's name. Upon closing the file I still felt some emptiness. These properties are not the ones we wanted. Never we wanted them.

Now at the moment what I wish was to be with him in his last days. Maybe we would have sorted out our differences. Maybe we would have forgiven each other. Maybe my mother would have decreased her guilt of being forgiven by him. Maybe I would have done his last rites. But all these remained as maybe.

I was thrown out of my thoughts when he shook me and said, " As I am saying you have to come to the MRO office and some other offices for the transfer of properties. All this will take some time so have some spare time left for these things."

I nodded my head and waited for him to finish his coffee so that I can leave for home soon. My thoughts again wandered and my attention was not fixed on anything.

"What about changing our background details? Should you change it again because of this?" I said to him. Suddenly that struck me. Years back I asked him to change all our background details, especially our mother's. Because of our past, we were outcasted by people. That's when I understood that people will only see what they want to see but they don't see things from persons who had seen it all.

Having enough I and Vihas decided of changing some key details about us. For my employment opportunities and for my brother's studies we never wanted any disturbance to occur because of our past. The lawyer has already changed our past but now I don't know what I should do about this new change.

"What's there to change? I barely created a cinema story for your past where your mother and father loved each other and left their parents who didn't agree to the marriage. Soon your father died of illness and your mother was hated by his parents. Now in their old age, they realized their mistake but couldn't embrace you all and left their assets in your name and died. That's your past."

My gaze didn't even waver for a moment as he retold the whole story. How easily these lawyers lie, right? And the story he created is too fantasy to be the truth. How I wish at least half of it was our story. Alas, the reality is far distant from fiction.

"Ok. I'll leave. Next time when I call answer the call on the first ring."

Saying so he stood up, and arranged all his bag not even bothering to see my response to the query I asked. Nevertheless, I nodded my head and stood up too. I forwarded my hand for the handshake for bidding adieu. Even he took my hand and slipped a piece of paper into my hand, when I looked down I saw an envelope in my hand which he placed.

"It's a letter he wrote for you all. Do read it with some peace of mind." Saying so he left my hand ready to leave the place.

Final Letter.

Last words.

"What's in this letter?" I asked him, more in a whisper.

"I haven't read it, Darsh. It's for you. Your personal thing. So you read it," he replied and left me all alone.

My fingers tightened around the envelope. My mind and heart are conflicted with mixed emotions. Anger and Regret. Both are getting directed toward my grandfather. Anger because he thought by giving us these assets will change our thinking toward him. That's never going to happen.

And regret thinking how lonely he must have felt in his last days and how vulnerable he must have been that he wrote his words in a letter rather than expressing them on his face.

Sighing I retired from the restaurant feeling sorry for him and hoping he will be at peace in whatever place he was.

Murmuring a small prayer under my breath for him I entered my car and started off to home.

That's it.

Before anyone get confused I am saying that lawyer changed his background with a false story. I don't know if in real life lawyers can do so. Learned things from cinemas. LOL!
