Chapter 6
Nidhi's POV:
I immediately rushed out of the house towards the garage area. And to my utter shock, I found the car over there in perfect condition. I bent down and checked all the tyres and found them in good condition, more like new ones.
He did this? Already? It's only 7 in the morning and he got it repaired also? What lie did he tell then? Whose name did he take? Goodness. What will dad talk about now?
With so many thoughts and fears, I went inside. Avoiding everyone I directly went to my old room and got freshened quickly time. And it's time to face all the people who are waiting.
Getting down the stairs I saw everyone sitting at the dining table having breakfast. My dad has a neutral expression, no anger, no sadness, but rather worn out too much.
I slowly reached the table and settled down with everyone. Mom handed me some bread slices and jam to eat as she was in hurry to go to the clinic. Even my brother was ready and had his tiffin.
I glanced at my grandma who is sitting beside me and eating the same. I whined at her showing her the tiffin and she sympathized with me and motioned me to eat without saying anything.
My hostel has better food than this, I thought as I spread the jam across the bread slice. My mother doesn't know how to cook and never did she have to. My grandma and father supported her to pursue her career and it's my grandma who took proper care of the household.
But grandma's health deteriorated over the past few years, mainly her eyes and she lost the magic in her hands. She is always the best cook in the world for me.
Bringing me out of my thoughts my dad spoke, "Must have been late yesterday."
My hands stopped their work and my eyes travelled to see dad's face to see him eating quietly without looking at me. What does he know? Does he know everything and try to hear the truth from me again? Should I speak out the truth?
But the car is all new again. So he must know something and that something may not be true necessarily. Let's drag the conversation till he opens up.
"Yeah, Dad," I responded.
"Hm. Darsh was sleeping in my cabin, on the chair, waiting for me," He told my brother with a chuckle, which my brother also smiled.
Guess, he hadn't told dad anything. No lie, no truth but must have repaired the car somehow. Thank God, I am saved. And bless him for saving me from all the trouble.
I didn't say anything else and had my breakfast in peace. Grandma and I chatted all the while as the remaining people were busy with their work.
I finished my breakfast and was about to move out of my place when Mom stopped me.
"Sit down. You came after such a long time. We have something to discuss."
'Discuss.' That word only means one thing in our house. Domination. Now my parents will propose some new agenda in my life which I have to follow without a say. And if I went against that, which I obviously will, they will show their pure dominance over me.
Basically, hell awaited me. I braced myself up and waited for them.
"So... what do you plan next?" my mom initiated the conversation.
"Leaving to work," I replied. I know it is not the answer they were expecting from me, rather are asking me about my next step in life.
"Nidhi! We are serious," chided my mom and continued, "You reached 25 recently and it is time for you to get into a relationship."
A smirk broke my lips as I understood the word relationship in another meaning.
"I meant MARRIAGE," mom retorted seeing my smile.
"Ok. Ok. Thanks for the discussion. I am not interested in marriage anytime soon."
"Why?" question came from my dad this time.
"I... I am not prepared for marriage. I feel it's too fast."
"This is the right age, Nidhi. After you, we have to find your brother a match too. Even he will turn 28 soon," my mom continued again.
"Do it even now. Who said sister must get married first? Which generation are you living in?"
I am furious seeing well-educated doctors behaving like this. Guess in front of the age of traditional practices even education falls behind.
"I want to see both my grandchildren's marriage before I die. I am already getting old," This time it's my grandma who talked. I glared at her for uttering such words. All this setup looked like they will, either way, tie me down to anyone without my will only.
"You are fine. You are ageing like fine wine and death will not come anytime soon, ok? And, Nithin can't you say anything now? It's about you too, right?"
"I am leaving to work. Let's discuss this again. Nidhi, shall I drop you to work?"
Saying so he left the room with his apron and stethoscope changing the whole topic and leaving everyone baffled. Taking the silence as a cue I left the place and headed out to the car.
Nithin started the car as soon as I got in. We settled for silence as none broke the ice and went ahead. My office is far from Nithin's hospital and I wonder whether he will drop me at the office or near the metro station.
"Can't you say your opinion properly, Nithin?" I questioned him when we were in the middle of the long traffic lane.
"My opinion would have hurt you," he replied with a straight face.
"Ohh so even you want me to get married now. Wow. Why do you want to get married so urgently?"
"Yes. With the girl I like."
"Come on. Don't be an age-old nun. You can marry whenever you want and whomever....."
I left my sentence hanging in middle remembering the words he uttered, 'The girl I like'. He likes a girl. My brother has a girlfriend!
Astonishment run through my face as I looked towards him. This silent fellow likes a girl. And he is even thinking about marriage and here I am still living as an ambassador of singledom. Goodness.
My chain of thoughts broke when he kept pressing the horn and the sound irked me.
"You like a girl?" I asked him still processing the newly found fact.
"Yes. And you are the first one to know."
"O.M.G, Nithin. Oh my... I am unable to say anything. Let me breathe.... Who is the girl?"
"Will you get down here and take the metro? I am getting late"
That's when I noticed he stopped the car near the lift of the metro station. From here it takes half n hour to reach my office. And here I thought we can have a conversation like siblings and he would drop me to the office.
"Don't cut the topic. Tell me na who it is. At least show any photo or say her name. Please," I requested him to reveal some information to me.
"You marry first and then I will tell you," he replied with a smirk.
"And I thought we can talk peacefully."
Huffing I got out of the car and headed out to the metro. I suggest everyone try their best to not board the metro in the morning times because you can barely breathe in there. There won't be any ladies' seats especially left nor proper place even to stand. And not to mention the stares of creeps and sometimes the inappropriate touching.
But to my luck, I found a seat as the metro was a bit free of space and enough to breathe freely. All the while I kept thinking about who that girl might have won my serious and studious brother. Another doctor or what? That thought irked me a bit but it's his choice eventually.
All my thoughts ceased as I exited the metro and headed to my office. I won't get any day off or leaves as news never cease to exit.
So going on to cover my next coverage and travel to places again.
