Chapter 26 - The Anarchist
Jacob opened the door to their apartment complex and called for Rose, curious how her day had gone. Mal walked in behind him and called for her as well. Neither of them got an answer. Not too concerned as to the fact that their friend wasn't home. Jacob looked through the supplies in his apartment cabinets, and found that he had small stores of food, about enough for a day or two. He cooked a simple meal and they ate, leaving the leftovers for Cat and Rose. Cat showed up soon after that. She ate her meal, but Rose never appeared. He would have understood if she had been a Renegade and pulled a late shift, but still she didn't show the next day.
"Cat, do you think that Adrian would be willing to retask your team to search for her? It is never a good sign when one of us goes missing," he asked.
"Or captured," Mal said, thinking aloud, "I mean think about it. All of us have been captured at least once. The first time it was you two, then Richard and I. Maybe that is kind of part of being a traveler or something?" Jacob had to admit that she had a good point. He remembered way back during their first adventure when he had to carry Cat to keep the orcs from practically dragging her across the field. Mal had come to their rescue at just the right time, and then back at Hogwarts Mal and Richard had been captured by the angry centaurs after being riled up by Lyndsey. That time he had to pull out his new spells to create enough of a distraction so Cat could free both of them. He felt like both of those were years ago. Probably because he actually had lived almost a year in both of their previous stories.
"Alright, I'll ask Adrian, but should I do it in front of Nova? I don't know that we can trust her to let the story play out," Cat decided to clarify. They decided that they would both ask their team leaders to work on searching for Rose. It would be easier because Rose happened to not be a Renegade, so the code would actually support their search.
When they arrived at headquarters the search started for Rose almost immediately. Jacob had sent the others a message explaining the situation and why they needed help. Kate agreed quickly and they all began searching. Cat was greeted by her team and they helped search as well. Danna stepped out of the building and burst into a swarm of butterflies, and Tony zipped down streets and through buildings looking for her. Jacob saw Karen's power for the first time as well. She walked into a window and rather than smacking into the surface she disappeared, presumably stepping out another pane of glass somewhere. Kate manipulated steel into some sort of strange board and turned to Mal.
"Let's try that technique we discussed," Kate said to her. Mal's water swirled in the air as they both stepped on one of the two plates of steel. Suddenly, the water blasted beneath the boards, and they took off like speedboats, literally street surfing. Jacob found himself alone without a partner, but Adrian's team stood with him. Together they split off into two teams. Obviously, they just had to go guys and girls. Cat and went with Ruby and Nova as Jacob split off to join Adrian and Oscar. They searched all of the places she would reasonably be, and after an hour more of searching, noon approached. They still had no results, and they had searched more than half of Gatlon City. It was at this point that Jacob realized they weren't utilizing one of their greatest assets. Adrian wasn't using his springs to move faster. Jacob knew that Oscar might not know about Adrian's alternate identity yet, but he knew it was worth the risk.
Jacob stopped Adrian for a moment, and said, "Sorry I've been slowing you down. We could be searching so much faster." Adrian looked confused for a moment, but Oscar seemed to understand, luckily.
"What do you...? Wait, do you know about... ?" Adrian started to ask, but each time a question formed in his mind, he didn't seem to know how to ask it.
"Come on, use the springs, Oscar and I can catch up later," Jacob told him, "Go, Sentinel. Go be a hero."

Cat wasn't sure she would ever find Rose in this city. Nova and Ruby were searching as hard as they could, but even with both teams helping, they still hadn't found her after more than half a day searching. It was just as she was thinking this that a figure in a massive suit leaped the distance between the two rooftops a block in front of them. Ruby gasped, and Nova gritted her teeth. The Sentinel landed on the far side of the concrete canyon and continued running on the rooftops. Nova turned to others, Ruby nodded and she took off.
"Where is she going?" Cat asked, somewhat panicked, "Why is she chasing him?" Ruby clearly resisted saying one answer, then decided on one.
"He's a vigilante, and she kinda has a personal vendetta with him," She told Cat. Cat shook her head, not believing her.
"Is that really what you think?" Cat questioned, curious about how much Ruby knew.
"What, is there some other explanation?" Ruby said back, "Do you think he's a hero and she's in love with him?"
"Depends," Cat said back, "Would you say Nova loves Adrian?" Ruby processed what Cat had just said, but before she could ask how she knew that, Cat continued. "Now we can't have her discovering who The Sentinel really is, can we? I would hate to see how that affects them," She said, following after Nova, "I don't doubt it was Jacob who convinced Adrian he was safe to go Sentinel." Ruby still looked confused, as she had just been told that yet another person knew Adrian's secret. She and Oscar had been keeping his secret for so long, and she hadn't told anyone. She had even covered for him more than once. Cat noticed that Ruby must be thinking it was Oscar's fault.
They caught up with Nova only shortly before they arrived at a building one of them recognized. Nova stopped in her tracks, as two others came to a halt beside them. Mal explained she had gotten a message from Jacob that The Sentinel was about, and they decided to follow. Mal recognized the building from the description in the Renegades novel. They had just arrived at Nova's home, the base of the Anarchists.

Mal approached Nova and a hand on her shoulder. She was about to ask what they were going to do when the kitchen window exploded as Adrian came flying through the window, luckily still fully suited. Nova gasped at the sight of the house she had been living in practically exploding. A figure of a younger man stepped into the broken frame of the shattered window. Nova stepped into an offensive stance as she saw the stranger in the window, not only because it was her home, but she wondered why the others hadn't gotten rid of them. Mal and Cat readied themselves for a fight. The boy was wearing a full mask that distorted his voice and resembled a charred human skull. He caught sight of Mal and Cat and only one word escaped his mouth.
"How-" he began. He clearly would have continued his statement, but a shot from The Sentinel's pulse cannon blasted the boy back into the house. Adrian stood and flames swirled around his arm as he approached the broken window. The boy rose and held out his hand as the flames shot towards him. They stopped in midair and began to turn towards Adrian. Mal couldn't see Adrian's face, but she was certain he was panicked at this point. He hadn't accounted for the return fire. She held up her hands and water shot up between Adrian and the incoming blast of flame. Steam hissed around them, rising into the air. When it cleared, both the Sentinel and the masked figure were gone.
Mal wondered how it was possible that the boy had recognized her and Cat, but she had little time to process it, because Nova was rushing into her house, checking all the rooms. Jacob approached from behind with Adrian, now out of his suit, and Oscar. Adrian played his part excellently. He rushed to Nova, asking what happened, though he already knew exactly what happened. Nova explained how The Sentinel had been in a fight with a fire prodigy. She decided to call him Pyromancer. Adrian offered to help her rebuild however he could. Mal decided to ask the question she might not be able to answer.
"Did you have any family here?" she asked, "Are they okay? We need to check on them." Nova seemed to glare at her through worried eyes.
"My Uncle... Oh no..." she said quietly. Adrian pulled her into a hug as she pretended shock at her false Uncle's death. Mal figured her real uncle, Ace Anarchy, was actually safe and sound back in the cathedral's crypt. It was only then that Mal looked back at the house. There, standing in the door, was Rose, with a few small burns, and a scared look on her face.
She stumbled down the walk way when Cat caught her and helped her along the way. When she reached the others, she spoke only a few words before passing out. "Anarchists. Planning something here. Recruited someone. Talked about... Revenge..." she had managed to get out before blacking out. Mal wasn't sure what she meant by revenge, but Adrian jumped in for her. He knew there were only two people they could possibly want revenge on. Hugh Everhart, and Nova McLain.

Rose woke up to find herself in a white room, on a stiff bed. She realized it was medical room, whether it was at a hospital or some other medical center. She stood and found herself sore and aching all over. She walked stiffly to the door and pulled it open. There the others sat, as well as Nova, Adrian, and one other girl she had seen back at the house but didn't recognize.. Her vision went blurry for a moment, and she felt off balance. She steadied herself against the door frame. None of them noticed her, of course, but at least they tried their best. She powered down, as she had unintentionally been using her power to make herself unnoticeable. All of them suddenly noticed her presence, and she was bombarded with questions. She decided it would be best to talk to one at a time. All of them stopped, suddenly interested in sitting down. Nova was the only one presently paying her any attention. They slipped back into the room.
"Can you please explain to me what you were doing at my home?" Nova asked in harsh whisper.
"Trying to figure out if there was some threat from the Anarchists. Mal told me that was one of their hiding places. I found it with this," she told her, holding up her wrist with the strange watch on it.
"Alright, but I thought you could go unnoticed if you wanted to. Is that not your power? Aren't you Miss Direction?" Nova asked. Rose really regretted letting Jacob make their names.
"Yeah I can, but apparently your friend Phobia can sense fear without focusing. Plus I wasn't expecting to run into Pyromancer. I didn't know he existed until I was in the house."
"He was our newest recruit. Your friend said you weren't going to 'mess with the story'. Doesn't this qualify?" Nova asked, clearly annoyed. Rose explained how the others had experience with this, so she was bound to make a few mistakes. They decided the best plan was to say that the Anarchists had been plotting to kill Nova.
Nova left the room, and next came the other travelers. They noticed her, and stood. Adrian looked at them confused as to why they had stood up. They all entered the room and Adrian shrugged. They closed the door and the conversation began in hushed voices. While Rose could shift focus, she couldn't keep people from hearing her.
After she explained why she had disappeared, their conversation turned to the person clearly on Jacob and Mal's minds. Pyromancer. None of them had expected to run into him, but even stranger, as Mal brought up, was that he seemed to recognize them. That meant he may have seen them at their trials, but that was unlikely. Rose pointed out that he hadn't recognized her. While the identity of the boy was a secret, they knew what he looked like. He had brown hair, had that horrible scar, and was about their age, maybe a little older. Rose obviously wasn't the best at describing people, but she couldn't come up with anything better.
Jacob actually pounded his fist into a wall in frustration. Then he suddenly stopped. "We need to talk with Adrian. You want to bring him in Rose?" Rose stopped using her powers on Adrian where he sat outside, and he entered noticing the others had gone in. Rose did her best to answer his questions, sticking to the story Nova had created with her. His last question was the one they all knew had to be coming.
"Now, how did you figure it out?" he asked them all, "How did you know I was The Sentinel?" Mal and Jacob took over once again, explaining the nature of there travels. They figured having only two people knowing their secret would be safe. They didn't want to many people knowing and it affecting the story. Unfortunately, this spurred an extra question from him. "What about Nova? Is she keeping something from me?" Rose took over this time.
"Yes. She is keeping back how much she likes you," she told him. It was a brilliant distraction worthy of Miss Direction. It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't actually the greatest secret Nova had. They clearly couldn't tell either of them the other's identity. Rose was beginning to feel the bite of her burns again. She asked the others all to leave her, and they did. She went back to bed and closed her eyes. This was already chaotic, how had the others survived this twice already? She would find out eventually.
