Five: never understand
Jungkook's eyes kept drifting, eyelids growing heavy as sleep beckoned him in with its enticing fingers. His head would fall forward, jolting him awake the moment his eyes closed. The delicate sounds of Jimin's heavy breaths filled the silence, creating a soothing beat. Jungkook had to blink his eyes, rub away the tiredness that wanted to claim him. He had to stay awake, protect the boy as there was no one else too. He'd been through enough, through a gruesome horror no one should ever be forced to go through. He couldn't even begin to imagine the pain he must be feeling, the shame his conscience is shrouding him in.
He knew of the victim mentality, of how when something so monstrous happens to someone their mind starts to cave in on itself and starts blaming them for what was not in their control. The rape cases he has investigated before, the victims have all gone through the same thought process. First fear, shame, guilt then the last part becomes difficult as everyone deals with what happened to them in a mixture of ways. Some let what happened make them stronger as a person, this unspoken goal to prove to the world they are not the victim their rapist turned them into. Whereas others let the shame and disgust eat them up inside, become this empty shell forever tormented by the past.
He didn't want that for Jimin, didn't want him to be forever haunted and in a constant state of fear always looking over his shoulder. Jimin didn't deserve that, he deserved his life back and he planned on giving it back to him.
He was going to find who assaulted him, stop him before he ever hurt anyone else. No one deserves to go through what Jimin went through. Someone coming in and invading their home only to abuse them in their own bed was disgusting to say the least. There weren't enough words to describe how violated Jimin must feel. It ached his heart strings when he thought about it too much, about the pain eating Jimin from the inside. He saw the doctors report, the severity of his bruising and injuries. The rope tied around his wrists had dug so deep it tore the skin. He wore hand marks on his lower back, most likely from being held down so aggressively. They were hard to look at-the pictures, Jimin looked so weak and frail like a ghost. His skin pale, battered and bruised with such brutality.
In the doctors report she wrote anal tearing was found signifant with rough or forced penetration. Those words were difficult to read, to know the brutality that was brought down on the poor boy.
A sound of locks clicking and the front door being pushed opened echoes hauntingly. Footsteps followed forth afterwards. Jungkook darts his gaze to the door, one hand instinctively going to his gun that sat holstered to his side. Jimin laid still sleeping sideways in his bed, hands clinging to his warm duvet. The footsteps neared closer, he stares cautiously at the door waiting. It carefully opens, creaking softly when it does a head peaks out. Jungkook bolts to his feet, gun raised ready to fire if threatened too.
"Shit." Jungkook curses under his breath, lowering his weapon when he makes out the features of the mysterious person.
Tae's eyes widen stunned, pushing the door completely open blinking his eyes in disbelief. He goes to attack the unknown man to him, believing it to be the monster who violated his best friend.
"You son of a bitch!" Tae lunges forward, going animalistic before he allowed his eyes to adjust and clearly see who the person was.
Jungkook gets tackled to the ground before he had a chance to react, Tae's entire weight is on top of him. Tae attempts to strangle him, wanting to wrap his arms around his throat until he chokes.
"I'm going to kill you!" Tae's veins burned with this boiling fire, a feral instinct to defend and protect.
Jungkook tries speaking, explaining who he was but the suffocating hold he had around his neck prevented him. He uses his police instincts in that moment, defending himself like his training taught him too. He twists his body, lifting his arm up he elbows him in his side. Tae groans, wincing slightly at the sting coming from his side.
"Tae! Tae stop! It's the detective." Jimin's straining voice pierced the air, snapping their attention towards him on the bed.
Tae releases his grip on his throat, scrambling to his feet eyes wide in shock and confusion. Jungkook coughs up heavy breaths, lungs desperately sucking up the air given to them.
"Jesus christ! You've got one hell of a grip, fuck." Jungkook rubs his bruising neck, still trying to recover.
"What are you even doing here? You gave me a goddamn heart attack. Why is he here Chim?" Tae's heart beat like a drum in his chest, feeling the adrenaline continues to flow through his veins.
Jimin switches on the lamp beside his bed, glancing to his best friend who stood stunned and then to the detective sprawled out on the floor.
"I was scared Tae, I didn't want to be alone so I called him to come over." Jimin felt suddenly embarrassed, he was a grown man and he couldn't even spend the night alone.
"Why didn't you call me? I told you to call me and I'd come straight back." Tae couldn't help but feel hurt that Jimin called this man he barely knows to come look after him instead of his best friend.
Jimin shallows hard, shifting his gaze down in a form of guilt or shame it wasn't quite clear.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want to be a burden on you." Jimin tugs on his sleeves, a nervous habit he just can't seem to kick.
Tae's expression suddenly softness, he quickly runs to his side, careful not to touch him as he knew his boundaries.
"Hey look me, you could never be a burden to me Chim. Never." Tae gets him to lift his chin up, giving him the chance to stare into Jimin's watery ones.
Jimin smiles sadly at him, not really convinced as he felt like all he was doing is inconveniencing everyone he cared about. He was a burden, a plague to everyone he loved.
"I'm sorry about trying to strangle you, it wasn't personal." Tae apologies to the detective who was now standing fully recovered.
"It's alright, I won't charge you because I'm feeling generous." Jungkook smiles at him, rubbing the side of his throat.
"Thank you for coming detective, I really appreciate it. Sorry for ruining your night." Jimin gingerly gets to his feet, wincing since his body stilled ached.
Jungkook shakes his head, walking up to the boy and giving him the most gentle smile. He hated how often Jimin apologised, there was never a moment it should escape his lips.
"You're welcome Jimin, if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to call. I'm here for you." Jungkook wanted him to know that, know he will be there for him.
Jimin's heart fluttered at that, he couldn't deny that he felt safe-comfortable when he was around him. He was now one of the few men who trusted being alone with, any man he didn't know was a threat to him. He feared being left with a stranger, by himself with a man he had no idea what were capable of.
"Thank you, for everything." Jimin looks down tugging at his lip, he truly was a damsel in distress who might've just found his knight in shining armour.
Tae walks Jungkook out, letting Jimin go back to sleep since he knew how exhausted he must feel. Jimin happily apliages, his eyes were struggling to stay open as it was and sleep sounded very appealing. Though he wasn't looking forward to the nightmares that will invade his mind, the gruelling memories he wished could just disappear along with the shame and guilt consuming him. No matter how hard he begged for the nightmares to stop, for him to forget his pleas were always for nothing. He was going to be reminded of the worst night of his life for as long as he lived.
"Are you going to find who did this? Get the fucking bastard." Tae wasn't sure what he'd do if the guy walked free, got away with what he did to Jimin.
Jungkook looks to him, catching the fire in his milky eyes. He could see this man really cared about Jimin, saw he'd do anything to protect him. It made him smile, glad to know there was someone out there looking out for Jimin. He knew he needed it, someone watching over him.
"I'm going to try, I will do anything in my power to find who did this." Jungkook really wanted to say for certain he'd catch the monster but cases like this the chances of actually arresting someone without dna was slim to none.
Tae nods at that, pit of his stomach seething in this desire to kill whoever raped Jimin and make sure he paid for what he did. He deserved the most cruel sentence possible, something fit for a ruthless monster like him. Jimin needed justice, needed the man who did this to be punished.
It had felt like hours, the distortion of time eluded him so cruelly. His lower half grew numb, legs like jelly underneath the weight of the man. He chest heaved in this painful rhythm, lungs burning as his sobs only worsened. The man would pull at his hair, his breath would prick the hairs on the back of his neck. Goosebumps quivered their way on his skin, tears stung his eyes soaking the blindfold.
"You like this don't you? Having me inside you." The man's musky scent drowned his senses, disgust swarmed around him.
"P-please stop! You're hurting me, please." Jimin hopes to plead to his humanity, though highly doubtful there was any to plead with.
No matter how much he begged and pleaded the man refused to listen. His ploys to get through to his humility seemed pointless and futile. Nothing could break through to the monster looming on top of him.
"If you tell anyone about this I'm going to kill you. I will come back here and hurt you." It was like a stab to the heart, slicing right through his soul because he knew his threat was real and it terrified him.
Jimin smothers his face into the mattress, clinging to the little self esteem he had left which in his case was nothing at all.
When the man finally finished having his way with him it felt almost unbelievable. He thought the moment would never come, the moment the man stopped. His weight seized from on top of him, the painful feeling of him inside vanished when pulled out.
"You're the best I've ever had, you should feel proud." Jimin felt his stomach twist and knot, disgust rotting his insides.
He can hear the man shuffling about, refitting his belt, pulling his pants up. Jimin kept his body stiff and still as board as fear crept its way in. He winces when he feels a harsh slap on his aching behind.
"Don't forget about me now will you?" A haunting chuckle escapes the man's lips, he throws a blanket over his naked body then with that he's slunking out his room.
Jimin didn't move, didn't dare breath just incase the man came back and decided he wasn't done with him. He laid there crying pathetically, revolted in himself. His heart bounded loudly in his chest. He waited for what felt like an eternity before he moved. His muscles ached. He digs his face into the duvet. He tries twisting his body, twirling his head around to try to pry the blindfold off. He arches his back pushing his head down as he managed after a little struggle to finally free himself from the material covering his vision.
He chokes up, blinking his eyes due to finding it difficult to see after been blinded for so long. His breathing stayed unsteady and harsh. He stayed on his stomach, getting soaked up in his shame and fear. He looked to his clock, his heart sank when he saw the time-how long his torment had been going on for. He cries again, feeling helpless and completely alone. Taking a moment to regain the little strength he had he lifts up his aching body. His knees almost gave out when he stands, pain bolting up his spine.
He pulls on his restraints that bound his arms behind him. The friction of the rope tore at his skin. He winces when he tries to walk, he shuffles painfully to his desk where he knew scissors lied. He spins his body around, his hands pat around to find them. When he does he has to try to open them in an uncomfortable position. He uses the blade to cut into the rope, sawing at it until it breaks. When it does the strain on his wrists no longer bares down.
He rubs his sore, bleeding skin as he collapses to the floor in a puddle of tears. He caved into himself, wrapping his arms around his naked body. His knees hooked into his chest, cheeks stained with his tears that wouldn't stop falling. He sat there crying until he found the strength to get up and call for help. He grabs the blanket the man had placed on his body, keeping it securely wrapped around himself he stumbles to his phone.
With trembling fingers he dials the number, pressing it to his ear. A delicate voice answers, it sounding soft and soothing.
"Police, what's your emergency?"
Jimin swallows his pride, closing his eyes he speaks.
"I've-I've been raped."
Jungkook goes over his statement, listening to the phone call he made. He could hear the crack in his voice, the pain that seeped through. He wanted to reread through everything he had, didn't want to miss a single detail. He was aware of how little time he had to find who did this. Time was of the essence and he couldn't waste a second of it. It was hard, going through Jimin's detailed description of his attack.
From what he gathered the man who hurt him seemed to be careful, there was no dna or any real evidence left at the scene. All they really have is the blanket he touched and the empty condom wrapper. He was very cautious, didn't leave much of a trace only a particle on the door handle. It wasn't enough unless they found a match but they searched through their database and nothing. They weren't anywhere near catching the man than they were when they started and it's already been almost two days.
"Goddamnit! There has to be something, the man clearly knew him." Jungkook rubs the sides of his head, feeling defeated like he was letting Jimin down.
"Relax Jungkook, we'll get the guy. We have a particle, we've got criminals on less." Yoongi assures him, knowing how dedicated he gets with cases such as these.
Jungkook ruffles his hair, deciding he had enough of sitting behind his desk he needed to act. He grabs his coat, throwing it on he takes his notepad, files and choices to go back over the cctv. Then he wanted to visit Jimin's workplace and university to see if anyone had noticed a man lurking around. This man choice Jimin for a reason, knew he was going to be alone and took his chance.
Jimin chews on his inner cheek, knee shaking as it bounced up and down. He was anxious and nervous, he didn't want to do this but Tae said it would be good for him.
"I promise this will help you Chim, it might actually be good for you. Help you deal with everything." Tae sat in the driver's seat, hoping and praying this may help him.
"I'm not insane Tae, I don't need therapy. I don't want to have to relive it, that will be what they make me do." Jimin didn't like this, he never wanted to come here but after what happened last night and the countless nightmares he's had Tae suggested therapy.
Tae sighs lowly, he really wished he could do something, say something that will make everything better but he knew nothing he said or did would change what happened to him. This would be good for him, a safe space where he could talk things out and meet people who've gone through the same brutal violence he went through.
"Please Chim, just give it a go. I really believe this will be good, will help you cope and maybe help with the nightmares." Tae only wanted to help, Jimin was letting what happened to him consume him and take him to a place he was terrified he'd never come back from.
Jimin yanks on his sweater paws, rubbing his little hands together out of nerves. He really didn't want this, though he knew it might help talking through what happened he wasn't sure he was ready.
Tae stops outside the small building, driving to the entrance to drop Jimin off. Jimin glances up, hesitant to get out.
"I can stay if you want Chim?" Tae stops the car, giving Jimin a moment to himself.
"No, no it's okay. You've done enough, I'll just meet you at home." Jimin shakes his head, he didn't need him babysitting him more than he has already done.
"I will pick you up Chim, you are not walking home by yourself." Tae wasn't letting him do anything alone, not even a simple stroll.
Jimin wants to argue but knew it was pointless so he just nods, getting out of the car. He stares up at the old styled building, waving Tae off before slunking his way inside. He holds onto his sleeves, feeling small as he steps into the office. A few people hung around, he glances anxiously unsure where he is meant to go.
"Excuse me?" Jimin shyly asked a women, scratching the back of his neck.
"Yeah?" She turns around, smiling at him sweetly.
"Umm can you tell me where room 141 is?" He pulls out the pamphlet Tae had given, all he was told was what room it was being held in.
"Oh? Well I'm going there too, follow me." Her eyes softened towards him, almost like she knew the reason he was here because she was there for the same reason.
Jimin quietly lets her lead, his anxiety only grows the closer they near the room. The girl would glance his way every now and then, giving him a tender smile. When she gets to the door she carefully opens it, allowing him in first.
"First time?" She asked as he goes inside, he just nods at her walking in.
Chairs were lined around in a circle, people lingered in the seats looking almost as miserable as he does. A few snaps their heads his way, looking at him which made him very uncomfortable.
"Hello there, you must be new. Welcome, please take a seat." A professionally dressed women who sat in the centre greets him, gesturing for him to sit down.
Jimin does as he's asked, plonking himself down as eyes kept locked to him. He squirms in his seat awkwardly, majority of the people surrounding him were women and he felt like they were judging him.
"This is a safe space, anything you say here is free of judgement. You don't have to speak you can just listen but just know if you want to talk we all will listen." The women said in a calming tone, wanting to make sure Jimin felt safe.
Jimin nods his head, looking at her gulping down the thought of having to share his gruesome ordeal with people he doesn't even know.
"What's your name?" She kept her tone soft, smooth to ease the tense boy.
"Jimin, Park Jimin." He barely whispers, talking to strangers had never been so hard.
"Well welcome Jimin, everyone say hello to our new comer. Make him feel right at home." They all greet him, smiling at the tortured boy.
Jimin subtly waves, sinking into himself as the attention felt uncomfortable and unwanted. The eyes felt piercing, burning into him so powerfully it stung. The women began to talk, delve into the session. Jimin tries to listen, focus on what was being said but hearing all the hellish stories of what each person had gone through was painful to his ears. He didn't want to hear it, it just made it more real to him that this happens almost all the time- To innocent people just going about their lives, undeserving of the abuse brought down upon them.
Jimin sat there in silence, wincing after every story another victim told. Each one more gruesome than the last, vivid in its brutality. They sounded familiar, he could relate to the pain and shame felt by them as they told their story.
"Hi, my name is Youngjae." Jimin bolts his head up, blinking stunned as he never noticed there was another man in the room.
A young boy sat a few seats away from him, eyes sunken and body caved in on itself just like his was. Jimin gave the boy his full attention, wanting to hear this boys story.
"It's been almost two months, I still find myself flinching whenever a group of men pass by me or when someone tries being intermit with me. I can't even look at my naked self in the mirror, everytime I catch a glimpse I feel disgusted and it makes me want to vomit. Sometimes I can still feel their hands on me, their weight holding me down. I thought maybe when they were arrested, brought to justice it would somehow fix everything but it hasn't stopped the nightmares or the fear I feel everytime a man tries touching me. I still can't sleep at night, still can't stop looking over my shoulder." Youngjae fumbles with his trembling hands, a stray tear sneaking its way out.
Jimin's heart ached viciously inside his chest, Youngjae's story resonated with him, he completely understood his pain. He saw where he was coming from, felt the anxiety that consumed him whenever a man was near.
"People say it will get better, easier but how can I believe them when they have no idea what I'm going through. They could never know what it was like feeling so helpless, so pathetic. I've dropped out of university, I couldn't take the looks anymore, the sympathetic stares. Being known as the guy who was gang raped by the football team wasn't how I wanted to be known. They destroyed my life, took not just my innocence but everything else with it." The silence in the room is smothering, the way Youngjae opened up like that was endearing to Jimin he could never imagine doing that himself.
Youngjae lifts his head up, eyes watery and glistening. His gaze meets with Jimin's, they both knowledge each other's pain in one simple look. Jimin shallows the rock lodged in his throat, finding his own voice to speak because if this boy could he could too.
"It's hard, everyone acts like they know how to help you. Think that if they just say it's going to be okay that it will be. But the truth is it never will be okay, no one can stop what happened. Take away the pain he left when he chose to rape me." Jimin kept his eyes on the boy, watching how he reacted.
Youngjae nods his head, giving him a sad smile which Jimin returned. They both were broken men, the few in the room who for the first time felt safe to be near a stranger.
