Quinn's POV
Leaning against a towering bookcase, lined with books from floor to ceiling, of various thicknesses. I was reading, "The burning light" the sixth time.
I turned the book. It was old, and its dusty smell gave it away. The words on the back cover were barely visible as the dust hid them; I wiped it with my hand. The summary of the book became clearer as I cleaned some parts with my thumb. I smiled once I read the name of the main character.
"Quinn", was a normal girl living her freedom to the extreme. She lived in a small house next to a big flower field. Reading books every day under a big almond tree.
I read the summary quietly, my lips moving as the words reached my eyes. Enjoying every moment of peace, I tucked my stray ginger hair behind my ear, continuing to read until I heard footsteps.
I frowned down at the book, as I started understanding the first part. My eyes lifted up again. I straightened my shoulders, looking behind the books on the ledges peeking through to the other side. I caught a glimpse of the black coat that made its way to the shelf I stood close to.
'Concentrate' I told myself as I rushingly looked back at my book. With each step, my heartbeat fastens, thudding against my ribs. I grasped the edge of the book hardly.
The room filled with a mint scent with every step and heartbeat. I stood there quietly forcing myself to continue reading my favourite part. The footsteps stopped, making me want to look in between the shelves again. My tutor stood right in front of his wood desk looking down at a big encyclopedia. I refocused my gaze on the book in my hands, rehearing the steps coming closer. Until I felt a presence in front of me. He stood quietly there watching me, as I turned the first few pages.
I stared at the blank white page, unable to read. I sighed, shutting my eyes.
I gaze up at him, holding the book tight to my chest after closing it. My eyes reached his green ones as I inhaled a deep breath. He instantly broke eye contact, looking down at my book smiling making his white teeth appear behind his cherry lips. I drifted my eyes back to the book in my grip.
"Princess Quinn Wasen this is a formal invitation to the King Henry Wasen's office and he wants you immediately."
My body tensed up at his words making me look at my tutor's tall beaming figure.
" Umm, I-I'll be on my way. Thank you for informing me, Mr Lane." I said forging a smile.
He beamed once again and turned around on his heels hesitantly before making his way back to his desk.
I strolled away to the centre of the library. Leaving my favourite book half-open on the large wooden table irritated by the stupid and stubble announcement.
I started racing across an open tiled floor, down an empty side hallway all ragged and talking to myself.
I ran down a few halls quickly before reaching the side corridor, passing slowly the servant quarters. The drab, worn-down carpet and dim lighting felt out of place. Every door was closed, aside from one that was slightly cracked.
I could hear a girl giggling and a man huskily stating, "Let's be done with it," before he shuts the door.
'That was for sure my brother' I thought, shaking my head.
I didn't see much more as I lost my footing on the worn carpet, tripping over a hole in it. Revealing the wood of concrete beneath it. I get up, dusting off my dress. Only to quickly walk down the hallway, leaving the awkwardness of what I witnessed.
I let out a breath that I didn't know I was holding. I rolled my eyes and reminded myself why I usually took the longer path.
I followed a series of long winding halls and narrow corridors, entering a wide carpeted hallway. Then I stopped when I reached the hallway that guided to a towering oak door.
I stomped down the length of the long oak door each step echoing across the room, arms flinging by my side.
"You asked to see me, father!"
My father's pale face blanched before turning red as he slammed his silver goblet down, red liquid spread across the fresh white cloth. His grey hair slightly went up, feeling a bit furious, taking notice that I won't agree with his decision.
"Quinn, I'm sure Ryder told you to meet me after the meeting." he choked.
I grabbed an empty chair, and then looked around making sure I wasn't interrupting anything. I felt like there was some kind of reunion because I sawed a glass of wine on the opposite side of my father's. I plopped down in the chair, staying quiet for a while.
"I was told it was an urgent matter that needed my immediate attention."
"Quinn, you already know the reason you're here for," He said, grabbing a tissue from his pocket to clean the red wine off.
I thought about it thousands of times, and denied, objecting to this idea. The idea of my father wasn't that simple, it felt as if I was taking something away from my brother.
« I already told you like a thousand times. I don't want the crown. I don't want this responsibility.... »
My father looked at me, raising his eyebrows calmly standing up walking into one of his windows to stare quietly through it.
'It is unknown how people kill to take the crown, and yet here I am. Unlike any other girls of this realm. Yelling at my father who's the King, not desiring any of this.' I thought to myself.
After a while, he turned to look down and shook his head.
"Quinn this is not a choice for you to make." He said calmly and calculated. He then looked straight at me.
"You should worry about the kingdom; this is not a game Quinn. And you can't argue about it anymore." He got back to his place, his hands forming a fistball, putting them on the table.
"No father YOU don't get to decide my path and the way I want to live it."
" Quinn... Speak to me with respect. Luithant needs a new ruler."
His face was raging; I could view all his veins bulging out of his neck.
"You really want to start a war? Do you?"
I shook my head, folding my hands together while looking down at them. War was the last thing I wanted.
"If your sister knows about this she will do anything to take the crown. It's you or her." I was still staring down at my hands.
"Then what? Tell me what you want me to do?"
"I refuse your generous offer. Alex would do well under your strict guidance. He'll be great if you only give him a chance."
"I'm running out of chances, Daughter. He can't even stand a simple order. He doesn't know how to stand up for himself. Other than his womanizing problems."
"For God's sake, father! I'm sure you can teach him! Why don't you want to understand? I don't want to be stuck in this damn throne forever." I raged out, tears threatening to fall.
The king's face seemed more shallow, with my every word. I had always viewed him as invincible, but now he appeared more frail and old every day. I couldn't imagine the day his throne became vacant. It emphasizes his frailness.
'Why did he insist on someone taking the throne so soon? Doesn't he have more life in him? Is he sick? Why wouldn't he say anything? Maybe I could help him.'
" It's been decided."
The king grasped his chest and leaned forward, coughing uncontrollably. He sat upright and began gasping for air, pounding on his chest.
I was shocked by the sudden action and couldn't think about anything other than my father's health 'could it be true that he's ill? Or was it some kind of curse? Was my sister out again? Would she attack her own father just to take the throne?'
With my powers, took no effort or concentration at all, I instantly got a glass of water in my palm. My father noticed and ignored it while closing his eyes, getting more tired by the minute.
"Breathe. Inhale deeply. Good, great job. Now, exhale. Again."
I moved my fingers, up and down trying to get him to recall how to breathe, before handing him the glass of water.
"Hold it."
The King begins breathing again following my directions, calmly taking deep breaths. Then he desperately grabbed the glass from my grasp, gulping all of it.
He clutched the edge of the table and looked at me with watery eyes, which pleaded silently. All I could hear was my father's breathing, my thoughts racing. He looked at me silently, awaiting an answer.
At that moment I couldn't help but accept. I didn't want to pressure my father anymore. I even noticed that he's somehow ill and needed help.
"I'll do it."
