Number 17
Mackenzie, [Name's] best friend, is going back to campus. She only had two and a half weeks of break before she has to leave, and she spent her time with cute anime boys. What better way was there?
They all lounge around in the kitchen, eating snacks and chatting. Madara sits at a barstool along the counter, Shisui stands near [Name], Sasuke sits on the counter near the sink, and Itachi raids the fridge for more snacks. The boys are sad about MacKenzie's leaving, but they're mostly unaffected.
[Name], however, is the most upset about Mackenzie's departure.
"But if you leave," [Name] starts, her eyes all watery and pouty. "Then we won't have a car!"
Mackenzie scoffs. She folds her arms over her chest, feigning offense. "Is that all I'm useful for?!"
"And what about us?" Shisui pipes up. He gestures to his family. "You're abandoning us?!"
Mackenzie softens her posture. "No, I just have to go back to school. I'm sorry to all of you."
"Good riddance," Madara sneers, eating a piece of toast.
Mackenzie laughs, unfazed by his brash nature. "And I'll miss you too, you grumpy old man!"
Mackenzie gazes at her best friend. With [Name] further from her job, she knows that transportation is the hardest at this time. Especially when Adam kept the car.
"Look," Mackenzie sighs and mutters under her breath. "You're going to have to get your car back from Adam. It's your car. It's in your name."
"I know that but, I can't face him," [Name] says, her face scrunching up. The horrid memories fill her mind. The yelling, fighting, verbal abuse. Thankfully he never hit her, just ruined everything she loved. Broke her phone multiple times. Threw a remote into the TV. Even cut up her clothes. "I just can't."
Mackenzie grabs [Name's] shoulders, snapping her out of the embedded fear. "[Name]! You have four trained killers under your nose that'll go to war for you if you asked them to. They already hate Adam as much as I do, so they'll have no problem roughing him up."
Mackenzie turns [Name] towards the boys, who are all staring at them. Big black eyes stare into their souls.
"You need us to kill someone?" Shisui asks in a chipper voice. He sounded so innocent, but the question is inked with evil.
[Name] shakes her head, the look of terror in her eyes. "No. No!"
Mackenzie speaks for her instead. "[Name] needs to get back her belongings, and her ex-boyfriend, which [Name] has told me you've all already met, has taken all of her stuff, including her only source of transportation, hostage. Please help her. She needs help. Just look at her!"
Mackenzie pushes [Name] forward. The look of a big frown and teary puppy dog eyes on their favorite girl all but melts the boys' hearts.
"So we kill him?" Sasuke asks again, looking at his family for confirmation. They nod, agreeing.
"Don't kill him please," [Name] begs, her bottom lip quivering. "I just want my car back. My dad got it for me when I graduated. It means a lot to me."
"Can we at least punch him?" Madara questions.
"Sure."
...
[Name] uses Mackenzie's car one more time to travel to her old apartment. She parks in the parking lot and takes a deep breath. She can see a shadow pass by the curtains, and she grips the steering wheel so hard her palms begin to hurt. From the backseat, Shisui places a hand on her shoulder, and says, "We're here for you [Name]. Don't worry."
His words are comforting, but that doesn't stop her from shaking. With one more deep breath, [Name] exits the car, the four of the following right behind her. Although she has a key, she knocks politely on the door.
"I'll kick down the door if you want me to," Madara offers. It's his weird way of being helpful.
"No, no. There's no need for violence until Adam proves to be hostile."
Madara grumbles about how easily he could just rip Adam's throat out. [Name] ignores him. She knocks again, and this time the door swings open.
"[Name]?" Adam slurs.
Oh, god, he's drunk! [Name] wails in her head. She knows he won't be civil.
"Come crawlin' back, eh?" Adam grabs her wrist, pulling her into a hug. The stench of alcohol and his body odor stings her nose. "I misshed you."
She pulls away from his hold and straightens out her clothes. "Look. I'm just here to get my car keys back, and my car. And any other things that belong to me."
For a moment, Adam is stuck in drunken confusion, then his mood flips upside down. "Oh, fuck you."
"Don't," [Name] warns, pointing to the group of boys behind her. Adam peers into their black, fierce eyes. He makes eye contact with Shisui, the one he hates the most. They hold no kindness for him, and he glares. He refocuses on [Name], his hazy eyes seeing double. "I just want my stuff back."
He sneers, struggling to keep upright. "Good luck finding it. I sold most of it."
[Name] chokes. "You what?"
"All your figurines and little collectibles," he grumbles, staggering towards the couch to flop down on it. "Sold it for cash, since I'm the only one paying bills now."
He speaks in a way that places blame on her. It's always her fault, never his. At first, [Name] thought she was strong for staying with him, but now she sees she was stupid. It was foolish to fight a losing battle, it was silly to try to fix him. He never wanted to change. Even when she left, he continued to ruin her life.
[Name] isn't a violent person, but the urge to knock Adam on his butt wells up in her. She sniffs, holding back tears. Some of those things were priceless gifts she'll never get back. "Adam, tell me where my other stuff is, the stuff you didn't sell. Like my car keys."
Like a child, he blows a raspberry. She will not give him another chance to explain. This was the last straw.
With a strangled breath, she says, "Madara."
It's almost instantaneous. Madara steps around [Name], reaching Adam in a matter of seconds. He grabs the back of Adam's collar, lifting him from the couch with ease.
"You will tell the girl where her belongings are," Madara sneers. "Or else I will rip your throat out with my bare hands, you miserable scum of the earth."
Adam, being the defiant little shit he is, spits in Madara's face.
This is bad, [Name] thinks, but she doesn't try to stop what happens next.
Madara clenches his fist and punches the young man straight in his gut. All the air leaves his lungs as Madara drops him haphazardly to the floor.
"I will not ask again," Madara growls, using the back of his hand to wipe the spittle from his face. "Where are her things."
Adam sobers up pretty quickly. He doesn't trust his words, so he points to the room. [Name] signals for the other three to follow her, while Madara kicks Adam while he's down. He stays to watch Adam, however, while the others rummage through everything.
The other three, Sasuke, Itachi and Shisui, all hold stuff up and ask if it's hers. She either accepts it or denies it, even if it isn't her stuff. They found a small box to dump all her things in. This entire crappy situation destroys her mood.
[Name] sniffs and sighs as she goes through drawers and drawers of his stuff. "He really sold all of my stuff?"
She couldn't believe it. How awful he is and how much she wanted to fix him.
"Like how could he." [Name] turns to one of the boys for an answer. Sasuke shrugs. Itachi looks the other way, not knowing how to answer.
But Shisui, he says, "He's an asshole. Who doesn't deserve you."
The answer does nothing to comfort her. So she continues searching for anything salvageable. Anything of hers Adam hasn't already sold or anything she bought him when they were dating.
The boys wreck up the room. Throwing his clothes on the ground, knocking stuff over, blankets are strewn about the place. It's an awful mess.
Itachi finds keys under the pillows, pulling them out and showing them to [Name]. It brings her some joy in the bleak situation. She takes the keys from Itachi, thanking him with a peck on his cheek. Before Itachi can return the kiss, [Name] storms back out of the room.
She approaches Adam with hands on her hips. "Okay, you sold most of my stuff, if not all of it. But where's the money? That money should be mine!"
Adam, looking miserable and coming down from his high, glances between Madara's murder face, and [Name's] angry one. He coughs and looks away. "I---I spent it all."
She closes her eyes, pinching the skin between her brows. With a sigh, [Name] says, "We're done here. I'm taking my car back."
Adam scrambles to his knees, and Madara goes on the defensive. [Name] only places a hand on the old man's shoulder and gestures to the door. He grunts, glaring at Adam as he leaves for the car, the other three following. Shisui lags behind, making sure that [Name] is safe.
"Wait," Adam speaks weakly. [Name] doesn't give him the time of day and walks towards the door. Her ex scurries across the floor to grab her leg. "Wait. [Name] come back. I love you."
Shisui scowls, and [Name] makes a similar face, trying to shake her leg from his grip. Adam begs, kissing her ankle.
There's a moment where she peers into his eyes and feels terrible. But that sensation dies out with the other embers of her love for him.
"Ah! Gross, get off!" [Name] sneers, but he holds on like his life depends on it. Shisui has had enough, and with one swift kick to Adam's face, he launches Adam off. The drunken man lies motionless, eyes wide open and blood dripping from his nose.
Seeing what Shisui had done, [Name] squeaks and pushes Shisui out, closing the door behind them. She doesn't want any of the neighbors to see and call the cops. They rush to the car, adrenaline flowing like crazy through her veins. There's this bittersweet feeling she can't quite put her finger on. She completed her task, but in the process, found out she lost a whole lot. With a sigh, [Name] starts the car.
Before they knew it, they were back home. [Name] calls a tow truck to pick up her car and bring it over to her mother's house.
However, she's still in distress. The mission was a success, and yet she only got a small box of her things. All those gifts. Those figurines Mackenzie gave to her as a joke. The things her grandma handed down to her after death. All those priceless collectibles Adam probably sold for a hundred bucks. All gone.
She trudges through halls, head hung low, posture sunken in like she wants to curl up and die. She finds Mackenzie, who is cleaning up what little mess she made, and dumped her car keys in her hand.
"Mackenzie, thank you," [Name] says. "But our mission was a bust. The only thing of value I recovered was my car. Everything else, that stupid drunk sold!"
The boys have never seen [Name] break down like this. She falls into Mackenzie's arms and sobs. All the things she lost, although materialistic, meant something to her.
Mackenzie knows it's not the time to gloat and say, 'I told you so.' It'll only ruin the moment. But deep in her soul, she feels fireworks and satisfaction, for [Name] finally dumped that douchebag.
Mackenzie pats her head, trying to console her the best she can until she realizes that it means even the stuff she bought [Name].
"Even that Itachi figurine I got you?! That wasn't cheap!" Mackenzie explodes, pushing [Name] back to hold her shoulders. "I'll kill him, and God will forgive me!"
"I'll gladly join you!" Shisui chimes in.
"Don't even worry about it," [Name] sighs. "If we bother him too much, he'll call the cops."
She smiles at Mackenzie and the boys. "Thanks for your help. If I did it alone, I don't know what would happen. Thank you, seriously."
...
[Name's] car arrives, and Mackenzie takes her leave. [Name] is left with the boys, somewhat fearful of the things to come. But as usual, they pick someone to cook dinner or help out [Name] with whatever she needs.
She looks at them, being busybodies, and thinks things won't be so bad.
Until Sasuke starts a fire.
