CHAPTER 22. SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW

Brayden's POV

She left just like that. When I proposed her, those three words, weren't enough to make her realise my feelings for her. I promised myself that I would protect this one person even if it kills me. I loved her so much. I only wished if she could've trusted me a little more than that. But she stabbed me in the heart, without any weapon. It's funny actually. She used my own weakness to hurt me. Out of everyone, who left me and hurt me, I never thought she would be also one of them. "Run, how much you want. But you will feel the same pain like I'm feeling right now." I looked at the person in the mirror. He had the same hurt as me in his eyes. I gritted my teeth. I hated seeing me like this.

I heard someone knocking. "Leave. I'm busy." I yelled. "Young Master?" It was Uncle Matthews. "Uncle I'm busy right now. Leave me alone." This might be the first time I talked to him this harshly. "Young Master, please open the door for once." Uncle sounded worried. I shook my head and opened the door.

"What do you want?" Uncle looked like he had been crying. "Young Master, please bring her back." He started crying. "Bring who? What happened?" I was having too much going in my head. And now I just don't want to feel or hear anything. "I can't reach Elif. I called Sister Marissa and she said Elif haven't reached there yet. I am calling her but she is not picking up the phone." The last name I want to hear now was of the person who left me. How much I hate to admit it, but this thought was making me hate her even more. "Uncle sorry but it doesn't concern me. She is not a child, she can find her way. I'm busy... leave me alone." I said. He looked hurt but I can do this.

"Young Master, I have served your family from a long time, because I owed Old Master for giving me a home to live, a family, food to eat and respect and care. I don't know what mistakes he had done in his life. But he was good to me, so I will also be loyal to him. But Young Master, that girl doesn't owe anyone anything. When your father made her promise to hide everything from you, to protect you, to let you go... she did. She needed you that time, but she let you go because she cares for you. You might have been alone all these years, but she was the one who lived in pain. Just tell me why would she risk her life for you? You should be the one to live the life she lived all this while." I was taken aback by his words. He never spoke to me this way.

"So now you will tell me what I should do and what I shouldn't, huh? Who do you think you all are? You will come and say one thing this moment and I will run after her to save her. Why should I listen to you?" I yelled.
"Because you owe her this. She did everything possible for you to live happily. Nòw you should pay her back for all that she did for you." He was just making me more angry. I punched the wall. "Master Levent will kill her if she can't get rid of that spirit in that mansion. I am helpless that I can't stop him from killing her nor can I fight that spirit. If you can save her, then I'll think she believed the right person. And if you don't, then I'll believe that there is no God in this world. She wasted her life for nothing. It's up to you now." I felt a strong tugging in my chest. It was aching inside. Uncle left me there with a choice which I don't want to take.

I paced back and forth in my room. I saw myself in the mirror, hurt and tormented. I looked pathetic. I clenched my fist and slammed it in the mirror. The mirror cracked and broke into pieces. The fragments made me realise that it was me who was broken, because of her. I slumped down on the floor. I looked outside the window. But all I remembered was her, her smile, her words. "You're not alone. You have me." She said those words so confidently that time. Then, where did it go wrong? A single tear escaped from the corner of my eye. I thought of that night, our dance, and I remembered one more thing. "Don't ever give up on the person you love." Ava said that to me. Yeah, I have to pay her back whatever I owed to her. And then it will be over.

I opened the car door and I saw a car parked outside the mansion. I felt it suspicious because no one goes there and my car was here and... Uncle Levent.  This man is seriously ticking me off.

I found the door of the mansion was locked but the car was parked outside then he should be inside and possibly Elif should also. Luckily I had taken the key from Uncle Matthews while shifting to the Church. I opened the door. It was dark inside. I stepped inside very carefully. I heard footsteps coming from my back but before I could turn and see who it was, the person hit me on my head with a hard object. I writhed in pain and collapsed on the floor.

My eyes shot up. I realized I had been passed out for quite a while. I tried to move my hands but I found out that my hands and feet were tied with rope. "Who are you? Come out." I yelled. And then I saw Uncle Levent switched the lamp and walked out from the darkness. "You? Open this now. I won't let you ruin anymore lives. Quit playing your games now." I yelled at him but he only laughed. "Oh poor boy. You wouldn't want to do that. Look I have your friend with me too." He moved aside and I saw Elif, tied and gagged, sitting on the chair. Her head was bleeding. "Why did you bring her here?" I asked him. "See now you make her understand. I'm asking her to burn down that body but she won't do it. Now if she won't do it then I've to kill her. And-" he walked up to me, "And you won't like it right? Ofcourse you love her, huh?" He laughed. I gritted my teeth. "I don't love her." I blurted out the words which I was trying to believe myself.

"Haa... you don't? What a grief ! Then you leave me no option but to kill her." He moved to her side and placed a knife on her throat. Elif struggled in that chair. She shook her head and cried. I'm hating this. I can't let this happen to her. I'll be guilty for my whole life then. No no no... I thought. "You cheated on my Dad, you deceived everyone. Don't you feel any remorse for the lives you have ruined? What did my Dad ever did to you that you lied to him and plotted against his back? Tell me." I yelled. I was struggling in the grasp of the ropes. I pulled my both hands to the side and slid one hand inside my pocket. He was looking at me with those hatred filled in his eyes.

"Yes I was the one who lied to everyone and ruined their lives. And you know what? I'm still not satisfied. Dad always favoured Liam. I hated him. I hated his presence in my life. He always got what he wanted and I got what he rejected. Even though I removed that petty woman from his life and even brought her son to Dad. I did everything to please him but he never.. he never looked at me. For him, I was just a street dog, he took in from an orphanage. I hate this family. So I told Richard all the truth, and you  know what he did?" He laughed like he had lost his mind. "He came here and killed Liam, your father. He killed your father, Brayden." He faked crying and then started laughing again. I really wanted to hit his annoying face and break his jaw. I was feeling irritated seeing him enjoying the death of my parents.

"Oh yes I forgot. I came later that day to hid some files in that room. Yes, that's where I used to hide all the important profit documents. But Liam found that out so I had to make him leave this world. So when I came back here, I found Richard's cold body. What an idiot. He believed me and went to kill Liam. Then I found Liam's body in that house, I took the body and threw it in the lake. Later, when Rachel also died, I found it strange. Then one day I saw Elif talking to Dad and then I came to know that a ghost is haunting this house. Stupid people." He thought it was a lie? "But do you know who killed Dad?" He said mockingly. "It was me. I overdosed his medication and he took it. So you see... what's the use of doing crimes if at one point you feel sorry for them." My blood boiled in my veins. "I'll kill you. You bastard." I screamed at him. "Let me complete first. I wouldn't have killed him but what's the use in keeping him alive anyway,  when he had already transferred his inheritance all in your name and even the house. What does it leave me with?" He shouted. "So I killed him." I clenched my fist. I found a blade inside my pocket. I took it out and tried cutting the  ropes around my feet.

"But I knew I had a trump card with me. Seems like this ghost comes as a profit on my side. I blackmailed that servant, Matthews, saying that I have the evidence of Elif killing Liam and Rachel. And that fellow believed me and told me the whole truth. So I realized that after all it wasn't a lie. There is a ghost in this house. But that servant made it easy for me. Elif was made to sacrifice her life to seal the spirit till you become eligible to take over the inheritance. And now as you are already 25 years, as per the will, you are legally eligible to take over the property but..." I couldn't figure his real intention in keeping me alive after all of this but now I can understand it all. "But you won't... since Elif won't listen to me, you will." I raised my eyebrow. He brought a file to me. "Sign it now." He put the file infront of me and went back to Elif's side. "What is this?" I asked. The ropes around my legs had cut finally. "It says that you willingly transfer all the inheritance to Mr. Levent Davies, which is me." He gave a mocking smile. "And if you don't sign then I'll kill her." He placed the knife on  Elif's throat. I gritted my teeth. "Your hatred is with me. Let her go. I'll sign it." I challenged him. "You think I'm stupid? First you will sign, and then I'll think when to leave her." He pulled back her head by grabbing her hair. Elif looked at me and shook her head to not sign the papers. I have to find a way.

"Open my hands first or else how will I sign?" I took this as a final chance. He came to me and bent down to open my rope. "Don't try to act smart because I have a gun too." He threatened me.

Elif's POV

I wanted to stop Brayden but I was helpless. My hands and feet were tied to the chair. After I woke up, I found myself tied to this chair. And then Brayden entered here. I wanted to talk to him. I wanted to ask him to forgive me because I was wrong. He came for me here.

I saw Uncle Levent opened Brayden's rope. And he freed his hands and took the pen to sign. I wanted to stop him but I couldn't say a word. Uncle Levent stood up and walked at my direction. Suddenly, Brayden threw away the other rope which was tied to his legs and stood up. He pulled back Uncle Levent by his shoulder and punched him in his face. He fell down on the floor. Brayden kicked him continuously in the stomach. "You bastard, how dare you kill my family?" He yelled at him and lifted him from the ground and punched him to the wall. He grabbed him my the collar and slammed him against the wall and kept on throwing punches at him. He was raging in fury.

Uncle Levent fell down on the ground. Brayden kicked him in his stomach again and he coughed out a gush of blood. Brayden, seeing him unable to move from the pain, stopped beating him and ran to me. He untied my ropes and removed the gag from my mouth. I stood up from the chair. "Run as fast as you can." He said to me. "And you?" I asked. "I have to finish some business here and then I'll follow." He said without any emotion. "I won't go without you." I opposed. "Don't be ridiculous. Just leave. Listen I'm doing this just because this is my life's problem. I don't want to be indebted to you all my life." He still had a lot of hatred for me in his heart.

I was about to open the door when I heard Brayden scream. I turned back to see Uncle Levent had already gained his consciousness and he threw Brayden to the pillar. He looked awfully stronger for a person who had been beaten so badly a few minutes back. I saw Brayden lying on the floor, writhing in pain. I ran to his side but Uncle Levent was fast. He stopped me mid way and grabbed me by my throat and lifted me in the air. It was then when I saw his face properly. And it wasn't Uncle Levent... It was Richard's face. I shivered.

My body froze seeing that horrifying face. I felt my heart stopped. I couldn't breathe. Those nights, they all died, their bloods on my hand, the screams all my bad dreams came rushing at me. I was scared to death. I tried to scream but my body was paralyzed by his grip. Just his white eyes and pale, scarred face made me tremble. It was terrible. He smirked at me and at once threw me away. My back slammed against the wall and I fell down on the ground with  a throbbing pain. I was unable to move. My body was injured badly.

I saw him lifting up Brayden and slammed his back against the glass panel. The broken pieces of glass pierced into his back. He screamed in pain. And then everything happened too fast. Brayden's head hit the railings of the stairs. The spirit took a broken glass vase and started walking towards Brayden, who was lying on the stairs motionless. I couldn't feel a single thing around me except this one pain in my chest. My heart was aching on seeing the sight infront of me. I realized that it was always Brayden who had saved me from all dangers. And I left him alone. The night when that branch pierced into his arm. He took that attack without thinking about him in order to save me. And now again he is suffering just because he came to save me. Why am I always crying? Am I that much weak? All I ever did is crying. If he hated me, then why would he put his life on line for me? The sight of him dying infront of me made me shuddered.
"And I'll be by your side in every moment." I remembered the promise I made to him that day. He promised that he will protect me and he kept his promise so it's time for me to prove myself. I crawled on the floor to reach him. I remembered Father's words. "As long as you mean good to others, you are Human. When you are ready to sacrifice, you surpass this Human Soul." And I'm determined now. I crawled to the stairs. And in a blink of an eye, the glass vase in Uncle Levent's hand pierced inside my stomach. I felt my life pulled out of my body.

"Elif..." I heard Brayden's voice. "Why did you?" He pulled me up in his lap and his face had the same pain when I lied to him to break up with him. "I'm sorry for lying to you. I promised you that I'll be with you in every moment of life but I failed to keep my promise." It was hurting and I was feeling too weak to say something. "No no... stay with me... no you can't leave me every time. I can't live without you." Brayden was crying. "Brayden, if... if we meet again in... in the next life... let's live somewhere only we know... Together. Only us. I will always-" I was near to my end. I have reached my limit. My heart was bleeding to say for the last time how much I loved him but it seems that I'm too late. "Goodbye Brayden." I wanted to touch his face for the last time. I reached out my hand but the glass went deeper inside my stomach and my hand fell at my side. I closed my eyes and drowned into deep sleep.
