CHAPTER 14. MISSING PIECES

Brayden's POV

I decided to leave that letter for now. It started to feel obvious that at one point of life, each and every people whom I called my family had done something wrong and lied to me about that.

"I called Uncle Ethan. He said that Mr. Ri-" I said, and Father shook his head to me, to not say the spirit's name. I nodded and continued, "so that man was one of Dad's trusted business partners and a friend too but later he deceived Dad and stole a large sum of money from the company's account. They later caught him though and was arrested for the crime. It was heard that he was bailed but after that there was no news on him. Uncle said we can get more of his information from the employee data registrar in the company. So I'll be going to the company and search that file. I hope that we could get some clues from there. What do ya'll say?" I finished and looked at them for a response.

"I pray that you excel in your quest for the truth." Father was the first to speak. And Uncle Matthews also nodded.

"So that's that. I'm going to the company. " I declared.

I took the car keys from my room and headed towards my car. I was about to open the car door when I saw, "Elif, what are you doing here?" I asked. Since last night, I had felt it strange whenever she was near me.

"I'm coming with you." She replied.

"No you're not." I replied, looking away.

"Yes, I'm coming with you." She said in an angry tone.

"Who do you think you are, always meddling in other's business? Listen this is my car, so I'll decide who can come and who cannot and I don't want you to come with me." I yelled at her and got inside the car.

"Hey, open the door. You can't leave me here. Why are you behaving like this?" She knocked on the window many times. I started the car and she came in front of the car. 'God, this girl is so dramatic.' I was losing my patience.

I got out of the car and grabbed her hand. "Why are you doing this? Can't you understand I don't want you anywhere around me?" I yelled at her.

"I know." She said faintly. "Well you know I'm stubborn. So it's your call, if you want to take me with you or I should go there by myself. And I don't know the way, if I took a wrong way and get lost, Uncle would be so worried. Okay, if you don't want to-" I lowered my head to her height.

"You already know you are going to win right?" I smirked. Because it's working.

We had crossed the Town and was driving towards the downtown. Well, it was not like the downtown, we see in big cities. But the area there had been freed of any settlements and it was a little isolated. Generally there were small shops, banks, hospitals and our company. "Hey, you are taking me to the company right?" The girl, sitting beside me, asked.

"Of course Ms. Elif Wilson." I saw her gulped.

"Okay. Just drive."

I looked out of the window and noticed the board. "Davies Enterprises. It's on the lane at the right side." I read.

I came out of the car and walked to the building. I heard her knocking on the window. I turned "Hey, let me out." She shouted. I understood by lip-reading.

"Press the button, beside the window." I motioned her. She did and the door opened.

I shook my head and was about to move when "Brayden" she called again.

"What now?" I asked.

"I can't open the seatbelt." She said and I looked at her.

"God, you're so annoying." I went to help her. I took out the seatbelt from the socket beside her seat. "You can't do this much also." I scolded. And it was then that I noticed we were too close to each other. Our lips were just inches apart. I could feel her breathe on my face. I noticed her face was flushed. She looked uncomfortable. I moved away from her.

She came behind me. I heard her muttered "Jerk." I glared at her.

I climbed the staircase to the 2nd floor because the elevators has been out of service. On the 2nd floor, I saw a room, written at the top as "Employee Documents Room." I tried to open the door but it was locked. "Dammit !" I gritted my teeth.

"What's wrong?" Elif asked.

"It's locked." I replied. "You wait here. I'll go, get the keys from the watchman." I said and she nodded.

I went down again. "Do you know where are the keys to the Employee Documents Room?" I asked the watchman.

"No Sir. After the Office was closed. No one came here and all the keys and other important items were taken back by Mr. Levent Davies." He said. 'But why would Uncle take the keys of Employees' room?′ I thought.

I went up to the 2nd floor. So the whole thing was a failure. I walked through the corridor but Elif was nowhere in sight. "Elif." I called. "Elif, where are you?" I called again. I heard someone scream and I turned. Eif came running from the other side and hugged me.

My back hit the hard wall and she started screaming against my chest. "Brayden, help me."

I held her shoulder and made her stand straight. "Now tell me, what's wrong?" I asked.

"Brayden, there are cockroaches." She cried.

"There are what?" I asked, scrunching my eyebrows.

"Cockroaches." She cried.

"Cockroaches. Seriously?" I might be a fool that I agreed to bring her with me. "Elif, let me make this clear to you, if you make anymore noises, I'll lock you in one of the rooms and go back home." I yelled at her. She flinched and nodded.

"We will be going back now because we don't have the keys to this room. So we can't get that file." I said.

"Brayden." Elif whispered.

"What now?" I asked looking at her. She took a step back and spoke,

"Maybe I could help." She said softly.

"How?"

"Move back." She ordered. I stepped aside. She put her hand on her hair and took out one hairpin. She put it inside the knob and the door opened. She looked at me and gave a victory smile.

"So I see, you've some usefulness too." I said and she gave me a mocking smile.

I walked into the room and Elif followed behind me. She was murmuring something. I peeked at her and she looked up at me. "What?" She asked.

"Do you know this office is haunted?" I said.

"WHAAATTT..." She got shocked and grabbed my hand. I burst out in laughter.

"I was just joking and you believed it." I laughed at her. Her face looked hilarious.

"You are such a Jerk." She said and slapped my arm. I stopped laughing and looked at my hand, which she was still holding. She noticed that and left my hand at once.

"I'm Sorry." She whispered.

I lowered my head and said, "It's not the first time that you did this, isn't it?" I smirked, looking at her already flushed face.

"Whoa... there are so many files over here, how are we supposed to get that particular file?" I glanced at the three rows with four shelves in each row.

"Isn't there any particular sorting like by the names of the employees or the year they joined?" Elif asked.

"I don't know. Let's check." I suggested.

Elif went to check the first row and I, the second row. After going through each of the files for 15 minutes, I understood. "The files are kept without any sorting." I said.

"Yeah. I think so too." Elif replied.

After thirty minutes, Elif called out "Brayden, come here once."

"Coming." I walked to her. "Did you find it?" I asked her.

"There is one file at the top of this shelf. But I can't reach there." She frowned.

"Wait, Let me try." I stood up on my toes and stretched my hands to reach the file but I couldn't get it. "I can't reach there too." I said.

"I have an idea." Her face lit up.

"What?" I asked.

"I'll climb on you and get the file. Isn't it a good idea?" She said with excitement.

"No. It's a bad idea." I turned down her plan. She frowned and said something through her gritted teeth.

I looked around the room but there were no chair or ladder. "Hey Elif, turn around." She was going to argue but I held her shoulders and turned her. I bent down and hold her legs and lifted her.

"Hey what are you doing? Put me down." She struggled.

"Stop whining and get that file or else I'll throw you down." I scolded her. She stretched her arm and took the file. I put her down. "You're so heavy." I stretched my neck.

"Don't complain because you lifted me, I didn't tell you to." She said.

"At first, the idea was yours. Remember?" I said.

"Yeah, whatever." She said and I rolled my eyes.

"Show the file now." I took the file from her hand.

The name on the file was "Mr. Richard Cornwell. This is it." We smiled a victory smile. I opened the file and it was empty. The pages were torn from inside. "What the hell? Where are the pages?" I clenched my fist and slammed the file on the floor.

"Brayden, calm down. Call Uncle Ethan and ask him if there is any other way to get any information regarding this man." Elif suggested.

"You're right."

I called Uncle Ethan. He didn't pick up. "Call once again." Elif said and I nodded.

I called him again and this time he answered. "Hello Brayden. Did you get what you were looking for?" He asked.

"No Uncle. I got the file but the pages inside the file are torn. Maybe someone doesn't wants us to know about him." I replied.

"In that case... Wait I remember Sir Liam used to save all the information regarding the employees in his laptop. I had the folder in my laptop too. Give me 5 minutes and I'll text you whatever information I get." Uncle replied.

"Okay."

After 5 minutes, I received a message from Uncle Ethan.

Mr. Richard Cornwell
Birth: 9th May, 1960
Address: 5, Beaufort Hills, Mount Nebo.

"If we go at this address, maybe we can get some clues. What do you say?" I asked Elif. She didn't reply. I looked at her and saw her a little shocked. "Elif, are you okay? Do you want to go home?" I asked.

She shook her head. "No I'm alright. But I don't know why I'm getting a bad premonition about this." She looked lost in some deep thoughts.

"It will be fine. Don't worry. I'm here." I assured her. She nodded.
