Chapter 30
ADILYNNE'S POV
I walk around the perimeter of my room at my foster house. I count my steps from each wall. Fifteen by fifteen.
The walls are between a really light blue and a really light purple. I could never tell which one. The carpet is light brown and soft beneath my feet.
I feel my anxiety starting to rise, but I don't know how I'm going to contain it this time.
What if I screw up and he doesn't want me? Or what if he's out to kill me too!? I can't do this, I don't want to do this. I mess everything up.
I pace around the room faster, still counting my steps from wall to wall. My head starts feeling in with what if's. Sometimes I wish my brain had an off switch.
I feel hands grip my waist, not tightly, but it still makes me jump.
"hey, love, calm down your shaking," I heard Austin voice but it sounded so distant.
"None of those things are going to happen, you'll be just fine and I'll stay with you for a while if it makes you more comfortable, he said.
I said that out loud?
I didn't realize how worked up I was getting myself until I found myself gasping for air. Austin immediately pulled me to the ground and wrapped me tightly in his arms. He ran his fingers through my hair.
"Deep breaths babe, it's okay." I could feel his warm breath on my neck.
"I got you, your okay now."
My throat feels like it got ten times smaller and all the air inside of me seemed to vanish. I tried my hardest to push air into my lungs but it didn't work.
I felt hot tears roll down my cheeks.
I'm a mess.
I feel my hands start to go numb.
"Adilynne you got breathe now, try and calm down for me, " Austin continued.
I laid my head against his chest and tried to mimic his heartbeat. I slowly felt my lungs begin to fill with oxygen.
"Shut up, please," I begged my thoughts out loud.
Right when I thought this was over my breathing picked up again and I went right back to square one.
"Adilynne your okay, I got you, nothing bad will happen." Austin said rocking me back and forth.
"I-" I tried to talk, but instead I was greeted with darkness.
AUSTIN'S POV
"Adilynne babe! Hey wake up," I said before checking her pulse.
Seems normal, so she only fainted, right?
I put my arms around her small body and picked her up bridal style. I set her on the bed and in my lap. I use my thumb to rub up and down her arm. Her skin soft beneath my touch.
"I'm so sorry," I whisper to her before kissing her forehead.
I slowly get up trying not to disturb her too much and pack up her things. Mr. Ross let Ayanna stay with us last night, but she's asleep in her little crib I bought for her.
I grabbed Adilynne's clothes out of the closet and put them all in her suitcase. I went to bathroom and looked for anything that could be hers and put them in the bag also. I zipped it up slowly to try not to wake Adilynne.
Are you stupid? She fainted, she's not asleep!
I stared at Adilynne's gorgeous face and the tears that were dried up.
I wish I could trade places with her. I hate seeing her like this. I hope one day we will be okay.
I went back into the bathroom and wet a paper towel. I gently wiped off the residue of her tears off of her face.
I don't know when she will wake up. Maybe I should go ahead and take us to Mr. Ross's house. Or will she be mad at me?
I decide that's probably for the best. I walk down the dimly lit hallway to check on Ayanna, she's still fast asleep and I hate to have to wake her up.
Please don't cry.
I gently pick her up, holding her fragile body in my arms.
How am I supposed to get this crib undone?
I hold Ayanna in one arm and pull out my phone with my free hand.
"Hello?" I hear Mr. Ross's voice through the phone.
"hey it's Austin, can you come pick us up now, if that's okay?" I said hoping he wouldn't mind.
I still find it kind of weird that he's my teacher and Adilynne's dad. I can't imagine how confused she must be right now.
"Yeah of course, how's she doing?" He asked sounding a bit worried.
I debated on whether or not to tell him about Adilynne's current state.
"She's stressed, but okay," I try to give as little detail as possible.
Please wake up before he comes.
"Okay I'll be there in 30 minutes," and with that he hung up.
Not you too.
The sound of chance barking echoed down stairs. I quickly and carefully made my way down the stairs to him.
"Do you have to potty?" I asked him in a baby voice.
He jumped up and down on his little legs and then ran to the door.
"No buddy we can't go out there, c'mon now to the backyard." I said in my normal voice.
I put my hand on the cold handle to the sliding door and opened it, to let chance out. I left it opened so he could come in when he needed to.
"Do you need to be changed pretty girl?" I asked Ayanna.
You could tell she was tired by looking at her eyes. I walked over to the couch and grabbed her bag with all her stuff in it. I took out a diaper and baby wipes.
I dropped the things into the floor and stood up holding Adilynne in the air with both my hands. I carefully threw her up and down and the sound of her laughter filled the silence of the living room.
Placing one hand under her chest and one under her little legs, I pretended she was airplane.
"Zooommmm," I said in baby voice while walking all around the living room.
Her laughter is so adorable.
I gently spun around in a circle and then flipped her around so one hand was under her back and one under her legs. I kissed her soft, delicate forehead and placed her on the coffee table to change her.
"See all better princess, " I tickled her causing a bright big smile to appear on her face.
I finished putting her little dress back on her. The picked her up and held her in one arm. I gently swayed her back and forth, to put her sleep.
"I love you ," I said while studying her beautiful, small face.
I hope you have a life better than Adilynne and I.
I walk back over to the back door and just as I reached it Chance came running back in. I closed the door softly to avoid waking Adilynne.
Maybe I should go check on her.
I stop and put Ayanna back in crib and then make my way to Adilynne.
She's still out.
I sit next to her on the bed and pull her head onto my lap. I run my fingers through her long hair.
What did she ever do to deserve this?
I think back to the first time we met, I saw a gorgeous girl, trying to get inside. It was kinda funny though. How mad she was getting. The way she took her anger out on the button.
I wonder how different things would be right now, if I hadn't been there at that time. It couldn't have been too different right? I mean we have all of our classes together. I would've talked to her sooner or later.
She probably wouldn't have ever opened up to me. Honestly, I don't think I would. I knew she was hiding something but I've never though it would be anything like this. I wish I could take away all her pain.
It's okay though, things are going to get better now.
I'm interrupted from my thoughts, when the doorbell rings.
He's here.
"Adilynne?" I whisper while gently shaking her.
Call me paranoid or whatever but I check for her pulse again, just to be sure.
And of course, there's a pulse. I gently get up from my spot and place Adilynne's head back on the bed.
"hey!" I say greeting Mr. Ross.
It's still a bit awkward to me.
"hey, are y'all ready?" He asks while shifting from one foot to the other.
At least I'm not the only one whose nervous.
"Not exactly, I need some helping taking apart Ayannas crib, if you don't mind." I really hope Adilynne wakes up before we have to go.
"Yeah, of course." He says.
I open the door for him to walk in, once he does I shut it softly.
"This is a nice house," Mr. Ross says.
"Yeah it is," I mumble.
"Anyways, it's this way," I say leading him upstairs to where Ayanna is.
"Where's Adilynne?"
"She's taking a nap," I say hesitantly.
That's not a complete lie, right?
She should be awake by now.
As if on cue, Adilynne walks out of her room towards us.
"Austin?" She says rubbing her eyes.
"Yes love?"
"It hurts," she says walking into my arms.
I wrap my arms around her. She grabs my hand and we intertwine our fingers. Using my thumb I rub soothing circles on her hand.
"What hurts?" Mr. Ross and I say at the time.
Her tears fall onto our hands.
"My stom-"
"Adilynne?!" Her body went limp in my arms.
I gently laid her down on the ground.
"Should we call 9-1-1?" I frantically asked Mr. Ross.
"Already on it," he said.
His face went from calm to worried in a split second.
I bent down and checked her pulse for what seems like the fiftieth time today.
Normal I think.
I lift her hoodie up far enough to look at her stomach.
That what she was trying to say right?
Other than appearing bigger from the pregnancy, she looks fine.
"Their on the way," Mr. Ross says bending down to Adilynne.
"We need to get her down stairs, " Mr. Ross says.
I pick up her small body and carefully make my way downstairs.
