Chapter 27

It's been a week. A week and their still not back. Taking care of a child is actually pretty hard. I guess it's good practice because, well I'm having one.

Tomorrow is going to be my first day back to school. And what am I supposed to do with Ayanna?

Austin and I have been hanging out a lot. He's been staying over here and helping out with Ayanna, so I guess you can say we've been together every second of every day. Ayanna said her first word yesterday. She said 'mommy. ' I had her in my lap playing with her, she reached up and touched my face, then said 'mommy.'

I broke down crying. I'm not her mom, but I guess I'm the closing thing to it for her. One day I'm not going to be here for her anymore and she'll be alone. Obviously this couple isn't doing anything for her.

I'm guessing I'll have to take her to school tomorrow. I mean between Austin and I it shouldn't be that hard, right? I just don't want people to stare at us you know? I hate people. Okay wait, I don't hate people, I just hate being judged and people judge.

Ayanna keeps us up a lot. We switch off every night. When she cries either Austin or I will go check on her. Sometimes I wonder if we're safe. If someone wanted to find me they could. I'm just glad I'm not being beat anymore.

"Austin, hurry up were going to be late!" I yelled from the bottom of the stairs.

Today is Monday and no I'm not at all excited. I just want to crawl under my covers and never come out. Justin and Sarah still are not back, do we decided to bring Chance to my my foster home since Austin is staying with me. Ayanna really likes him.

She's just learning to walk so we're having to baby proof everything. She seems like she is going to be really smart.

"Give me a second!" Austin yelled back.

By the time Austin got downstairs I had everything that we would need for Ayanna. I made Austin change her diaper this time. That's probably what took so long.

"You ready?" Austin asked.

"Not at all."

"Oh I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to Ayanna," Austin said smiling.

I gave him a glare and took the baby in my arms.

"Hey, no fair!" He pouted.

" I think it's pretty fair, " I said cradling Ayanna in my arms.

*****

"Adilynne, Austin, nice to see you joining class today and why do you have baby in class!!" Mr. Ross said a bit angrily.

"Uh, you see what happened was," Austin started but before he could finish the whole class started laughing.

How was that funny?

"My parents had an emergency and had to leave so I go stuck with the baby and Austin is helping me," I said as fast as I could then took a seat in the very back of the class.

"Austin, you could've done better man, " A person from the front said.

I could feel my whole face light up as the class laughed.

Austin grabbed my hand and pulled me to my feet, carefully since I had the baby in my arms.

He placed one hand on my waist and the other in my hair. He pressed his lips against mine, causing the class to go from laughter to cheering.

"Alright! Everyone enough!" Mr. Ross said trying to calm everyone down.

"And you two," he said pointing to Austin and I, "outside now."

I felt everyone's eyes on us as we made our way to the door.

"Do you want me to shut it?" Austin asked when we were in the hallway. "

"Yes," Mr. Ross said.

"Code red! Code red! This not a drill! Code red!" The sound of our principals voice echoed through the hall.

We heard glass being broke from the other side of the building.

What the hell?

"Oh shoot, inside, inside now!" Mr. Ross whispered yelled to us.

The look of panic crossed his face.

We've never had one of these.

"Everyone stack the chairs against the door quickly and quietly, and someone turn off the lights!" Mr. Ross said while closing all the blinds.

I find a corner behind the teachers desk and hide. I try to stay as calm as possible. It's a little easier for me because well I'm used to father. It's still a shock, though.

I hold Ayanna close to my chest, praying that she won't make a sound.

Everyone crowds behind the teachers desk, some people start silently crying others are clearly in shock.

When five minutes seem to past the sound of bullets being fired echoes into our room, causing everyone to jump. in

Please don't come in here, please.

Glass is heard being smashed and at this point I can feel my a anxiety attack starting. Along with glass we hear distant voices telling commands into different classrooms.

I can hear a few words now and then. Piecing it together it sounds like a man ordering them to get on their knees and put their hands behind their heads.

It can't be right?

As if my thoughts were being read the intercom cut on, a deep voice filling the silence.

"I'm very sorry, for having no choice but to come into your school like this, but my dear Adilynne, your daddy missed you," My heart froze.

"And you can all blame her, my dear little angel for thinking she could escape. I'll give you ten minutes, and if your not in the office in ten minutes, I'll start shooting all these precious little souls and maybe, just maybe you won't be the same fate chlorise did." with that the intercom cut off.

Or we thought it did.

We could hear their whispering to one another. Apparently they don't know how to work it.

"The cops, dude you can't go back to jail, we just have to take her and run," one of the men said.

" What classroom? "

"502," I think.

That classroom is empty. Thank God!

"What are you doing? We have to go now!" Another man said.

"Fine, but I'll get her soon,"Father said, "that's enough to scare her. "

Everyone turned and stared at me, speechless.

This can't be happening.

Austin looked at me with tears already running down his face.

How did he get out of jail?!

Mr. Ross looked at me in shock, "Adilynne your mom's name is Chlorise?"

I could only shake my head, yes.

Deep breaths, one, two, three, four...

He pulled a picture out of his back pocket and passed it to me.

"Is that her?" He asked.

I handed Ayanna to Austin and took the picture with my shaky hands.
