Jeongguk sighs as his phone vibrates against his mother's nightstand again. Picking it up and finding another message from Taehyung telling him how worried he is. Guilt stirs in his chest as he sits the phone back down. Grabbing his drink and further numbing his feelings.
"Who's that?" His mother asks from where she sits at her vanity applying face creams. A drink unsurprisingly by her side as well.
"Nothing...I mean no one." The ravenette says staring at the bottom of his glass. His head somehow still throbbing in his slightly drunken state.
"Whoever it is seems to be worried." Mrs. Jeon says looking at her son. "Is it a woman?"
Jeongguk shakes his head as he stands to get another drink. Stumbling a bit on his way to the minibar. "Trust me, it's not a woman."
"Maybe you should slow down, sweetheart." His mother says standing and walking over to him. Taking the glass and the bottle of liquor from his hands. "You've had enough for today I think."
"You're one to tell someone to stop drinking." The ravenette scoffs, but he doesn't argue. He walks back to the bed and lays down with a heavy sigh. He knew that it was getting late and that he should at least text Taehyung. But he knew disappearing for the entire day and drunk texting the brunette wasn't going to help.
"Are you going to stay again tonight?" Mrs. Jeon asks facing him with crossed arms. "Or should I get you a car?"
"Are you kicking me out?" Jeongguk asks lifting his head to look at the woman.
"Of course not." She answers as she walks over and takes a seat at the end of the bed. "I just don't want you driving."
"I'm fine." The ravenette says despite clearly not being fine. He pushes himself up out of the bed, ruffling his messy hair as he grabs his phone and keys. "I'm just gonna go."
"Let me get you a car, honey." Mrs. Jeon says standing with him. Worry etched in her features as she stops him. "You can't drive."
"I'll get my own ride, ma. I'm fine." Jeongguk says stepping into his shoes. "I'll come to check on you again tomorrow."
"Okay. Be careful, please." His mother says as he hugs her. "I love you, Jeongguk."
"Love you too." The ravenette mumbles before pulling away from the embrace. Leaving the room as he calls for a car.
After calling for a ride he goes to the kitchen for some water. He couldn't show up completely trashed after being gone all day.
If he could hold himself together a little maybe he could convince Taehyung that he's just extremely tired.
When he finally arrives at his apartment complex it is well past nine, almost ten. He stands outside of his door for a second. Trying to come up with a reasonable explanation as to where he was exactly.
He gives up after a while and opens the door. Finding the apartment dark and silent. Taehyung must've gone to bed already.
Jeongguk sighs in relief as he closes the door quietly behind himself. Being sure to make the least amount of noise possible.
"Where the hell were you?"
Jeongguk startles as he faces Taehyung. Finding the younger standing at the entrance of the hallway with his arms crossed.
"Tae~"
"What happened to your face?" Taehyung asks when he notices the dark bruise on Jeongguk's face. Walking over and taking the older's face in his hands, making him flinch when he touches the tender area. "Were you in a fight?"
"No," Jeongguk says trying to pull away from the younger. But Taehyung keeps his face in his hands, looking at him with an unreadable expression. "What?"
"You're such an asshole." The brunette says, surprising Jeongguk when he wraps his arms around his neck. Hugging him as he continues. "I was worried sick about you."
Jeongguk hugs him back after recovering from his brief moment of shock. Wrapping his arms around his torso naturally. "I'm sorry, Tae. I should've called."
Taehyung doesn't respond, not moving to pull away from the embrace either. Causing Jeongguk to hug him tighter.
"What's wrong, Tae?" The ravenette asks after a while. Pulling away from the hug enough to look into Taehyung's eyes. The tears in the brunette's eyes catching him off guard. "Why are you crying?"
Taehyung shakes his head as he uses his sleeves to wipe away his tear. More falling in their wake despite his efforts.
"Tell me." Jeongguk urges in concern. "Please?"
"Okay..." The brunette takes a deep breath as he wipes his tears again. Glancing towards the ceiling as he exhales. "I had to call Dr. Song today~"
"What's wrong?" The ravenette asks immediately. The concern on his face morphing into a mixture of fear and worry.
"I'm spotting," Taehyung says, his voice cracking as another wave of emotion washed over him. "It's been happening for a few days but I didn't say anything because I didn't want you to worry."
"Hey," Jeongguk says gently, making Taehyung meet his eyes. "I don't care what it is, you can tell me about it. No matter what, okay?"
The younger nods. "I'm sorry. I s-should've said something sooner."
"What did Dr. Song say?" The older asks, again concealing his true emotions for the sake of someone he cares about.
"She doesn't think there's anything to worry about. But she wants me to come in t-to~" Taehyung swallows hard as he forces himself to continue. "~to be sure I-I'm not miscarrying."
Jeongguk's face noticeably becomes pale. His eyes fluttering slightly in fear and confusion, and his breath trembling slightly. But he nods his head and rubs a soothing hand into the small of Taehyung's back. "Okay...okay, yeah. But she did say everything could be fine?"
"Mhm." The brunette nods. Trying to understand the blank look on Jeongguk's face. "Are you upset?"
"No. I'm not...I'm not." The ravenette says meeting the younger's eyes. "It's gonna be fine. Everything's fine."
"I'm sorry, Jeongguk~"
"No. No, don't apologize." Jeongguk says pulling Taehyung back into his arms. More so to comfort himself, and to give himself a chance to react. "It's gonna be fine. Okay? It's late so we should get some rest for the appointment. Yeah?"
"Okay," Taehyung says with a short sigh. Closing his eyes for a moment before pulling away from the hug. Frowning slightly when he looks at the bruise on Jeongguk's face again. "Is your face okay?"
"Yeah. It's fine." The ravenette says dismissively as he takes Taehyung's hand. Leading him towards his room. "It doesn't hurt."
Taehyung nods as he lets Jeongguk walk him to his room. Wiping his teary eyes for the umpteenth time when they reach his door. "Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?"
Jeongguk cracks the smallest of smiles as he nods his head. "Yeah. I'll stay with you."
Taehyung offers a sad smile as he walks in first. Laying down with a sigh as his exhaustion hits him all at once.
Jeongguk allows him to get comfortable before sitting down, leaning back against the headboard.
"You're gonna sit up?" The brunette asks looking up at him.
"Yeah." The ravenette says looking back at him in confusion.
"Don't sit up," Taehyung says looking away as if he's embarrassed. His face flushing slightly.
Jeongguk smiles, rolling his eyes slightly. "If you want to cuddle just say so."
"Shut up. You know I want to, so why do I have to say so?" The brunette pouts. Turning his back to the ravenette and pulling the covers over himself.
Jeongguk smiles fondly at him, the smile quickly forming into a sad one as his heart swelled in his chest. He ignores the feeling as he lies down, wrapping a secure arm around Taehyung.
"Better?" He asks in an attempt to keep the situation playful...and meaningless.
"Mhm." Taehyung hums in response. "Thank you."
Jeongguk relaxes into their embrace, sighing as some of the tension left his shoulders.
Their appointment is early the next morning at 5:30. Both Jeongguk and Taehyung in solemn moods as they groggily prepare for the appointment.
Jeongguk's head throbs as he drives Taehyung's car, reminding him of his potential concussion while he focuses on the road. Neither him nor Taehyung saying much to each other on the way to the doctor.
The ravenette's hands shake a bit as they reach the doctor's office. But he isn't sure if it's because he's nervous or because he hadn't smoked since yesterday morning.
He ignores the slight tremble as he and Taehyung climb out of his car. Offering the brunette a reassuring smile. "You okay?"
Taehyung nods, trying his best to return the smile. "I'm trying to be."
Jeongguk nods in understanding before Taehyung leads the way into the building. Checking in with the front desk before taking a seat in the waiting room. His leg bouncing continuously as they wait.
Jeongguk notices his nerves and wraps a comforting arm around him. Letting the younger lean his head on his shoulder. He wants to offer him some reassuring words but he isn't even sure he could reassure himself at the moment.
They get called to the back after a long and tortuously slow ten minutes. Dr. Song greeting them with a smile despite their solemn attitudes.
"How are you feeling this morning, Taehyung?" The woman asks as Jeongguk helps Taehyung onto the exam table. "Any discomfort anywhere?"
"No." The brunette answers handing Jeongguk his phone. "I feel okay."
"That's good to hear." Dr. Song says as she takes a seat at the computer in the room. "Like I said over the phone, spotting is completely normal in most cases. It could be due to your body adjusting to the pregnancy. And because of the nature of your pregnancy, this could also mean a number of other things. But we'll take a look and try to hear the heartbeats before we get into that. Okay, sweetie?"
"Okay." Taehyung sighs. Trying his best to stay calm as she starts the ultrasound. Looking at Jeongguk who has an unreadable expression on his face as he stands beside him.
Dr. Song dims the lights before taking the wand and using it to spread the lubricant jelly over Taehyung's stomach. Watching the screen close with a look of concentration.
"Okay, so here's baby A." She says pointing to the baby on the left side of the screen. Pointing to the right side next. "And baby B is here."
Taehyung nods silently, his heart swelling as he watches the screen. He didn't know it was possible to love anything so much. He didn't know he could love anyone this much without ever meeting them.
After a few seconds of silence, a steady heartbeat sounds through the room. Jeongguk's eyes flood with relief but Taehyung doesn't feel anything yet. He had to know that they were both alright.
"This is baby B. They're measuring bigger than baby A, which is completely normal. And to be expected. Their heartbeat is strong. Perfect." Dr. Song says moving the wand over to the second baby. "Baby A is smaller, so their heartbeat might be weaker. But again, completely normal."
A few moments of tense silent pass as Dr. Song searches for the baby's heartbeat. Jeongguk taking Taehyung's hand to try and comfort him.
The brunette's eyes don't leave the screen. Tears forming as more seconds passed without a sound.
"Okay..." Dr. Song says to herself as she continues to move the wand. The look on her face making Taehyung's chest fill with fear.
After what feels like a lifetime the sound of a strong heartbeat fills the silence in the room. Dr. Song even releasing a relieved sound along with Taehyung and Jeongguk.
"Oh my god." Jeongguk sighs as even more relief floods through him. Squeezing Taehyung's hand assuringly.
Taehyung closes his eyes, tears of relief falling down his face when he looks back at the screen.
"There it is. Baby's in an awkward position, that's all." Dr. Song chuckles. "And they look great, you guys. They've passed their thirteen-week milestone and they seem to be progressing to their fourteenth week."
"Really?" Taehyung asks through his tears. Trying to dry his face with the back of his hands.
"Mhm. They both look and sound great." The woman smiles as she continues to examine the ultrasound. "I'm still going to run a few tests to be on the safe side. But I'm 99% sure that your spotting is due to bodily changes."
"Okay." The brunette nods. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me, sweetheart." Dr. Song smiles as she stands to turn the lights back on. "Go ahead and wipe that off. I'll be back in a few minutes."
Jeongguk sighs when she's gone. Taking a seat in one of the chairs against the wall and finally giving himself a chance to relax.
"Are you okay?" Taehyung asks as he sits up with his back to the ravenette.
"Yeah. I'm fine." The older says. "I should be asking you if you're okay."
Taehyung shrugs. "I'm fine. Your face is just blank, so it's hard to tell what you're thinking."
"Oh," Jeongguk says looking down at his hands. Unsure of how to respond. "I'm relieved, of course. I'm just, I guess I'm not showing it well."
"I'm relieved too." The brunette sighs before falling silent. Pressing his hands against his small bump. "I love them so much already, it would've killed me if something was wrong."
"They're gonna be okay. We'll do everything we can to make sure they are." The ravenette says, his voice and expression are still extremely blank and dull.
Taehyung sighs softly to himself without saying anything else. He was trying not to let Jeongguk's mood bring him down any more than it already has. But it's hard when all he needs right now is reassurance.
It made him feel alone. And he really didn't want to feel like that right now.
