~Peace
The faint sound of the bell from the senior block was enough to make me look up from the book I was engrossed in. I mean, we were in our final year of secondary school and external examinations were fast approaching so, after that yeye woman chased me out of her class, I decided to come to the library since I was the library prefect for the science department and had the keys to the main library and the science section.
Glancing at the wall clock, it read: 10.01 Am, meaning it was time for the first break of the day. I left for the cafeteria and didn't bother going back to the class because I know Toyo and Anjola would already be on their way there.
God! It was such a long walk. I mean, I was coming from the library so I had to go past the senior block, junior block, school's clinic and junior cafe before getting to the seniors cafeteria. I legit spent eight minutes walking there. How did the architect not consider the students?
I pushed open the glass doors and instantly sighted Anjola sitting at our usual spot, smiling at something in her phone.
"Hey," I said as I occupied one of the two empty seats. I assumed she didn't hear my the first time so I spoke again. "Hey Anjo–" I hadn't completed my statement and was cut off by a low chuckle from her lips and a small smile found its way to my lips. "This one that you're smiling like this, who are you chatting with, ehn?" I asked but didn't get a reply.
Okayyyyyy. So, it's either she's so engrossed in whatever she's doing on her phone, or she's just flat out ignoring me and I feel like it's the latter because she cannot be turn deaf just like that na.
"Anjola, I've been talking to you," I stated the obvious and she dropped her phone on the table, almost doubling over in laughter. Ahan! Then, she took a sip from her bottle of Fanta before picking up her phone and continued scrolling through it.
Anjola is ignoring me? Mad o!
"Doye, why have you been ignoring me?" I asked and she looked up from her phone, meeting my gaze with an expression I couldn't read, eyebrow raised up as if to ask, 'what do you want?'
"Doye I have–"
"It's Anjola." She interrupted me before going back to her phone.
Since when?
Ahbi is this one okay?
I reached out to grab the phone out of her hands but she moved the phone out of my reach.
"Anjola!"
"Don't shout at me." She replied almost immediately with a very calm voice. "Why are you ignoring me?" I asked for the umpteenth time since I sat down here and she chuckled.
Ment?
"You don't know why I'm ignoring you? Wow!" And she went back to her phone.
I was seconds away from standing up, grabbing the stupid phone from her and smashing it on the ground, watching it shatter into a million pieces because, what the actual fuck?
"Sorry I'm late guys, Emeka wasted my time." She said, taking the empty seat.
"Emeka is always wasting your time." I hissed, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. Yeye!
But instead she chuckled. "Mama stop being jealous and get yourself a man!"
"Ewww! Toyosi abeg." This time I heard another chuckle from Anjola.
"Anjie, what's that?" Toyo asked bringing her phone out of her blazer's pocket. "You want me to spoil it for you?" She looked up from her phone, a full grin spread across her lips.
I hissed lowly.
"Spoil what?"
"Aunty Tori just updated!" She screamed in a sing song voice and Toyo just had to follow suit, both of them squealing in all their excitement, making people turn their heads in our direction.
I wouldn't have minded if they had included me in their excitement though. Rubbish!
"Chineke," she called out to me in a sing song voice and I acted oblivious to the fact that she called me by my surname again after all the warnings. I sighed involuntarily.
"How are you b?" I looked up to meet her gaze. Lips stretched in a pretty smile, but who cares though?
"It's the fact that I was invisible until now for me though," I replied her, sarcasm intended.
"Jealousy," She said with a low chuckle. "I'm not jealous. I've been here for more than ten minutes and you guys have been ignoring me, intentionally." And I turned to look at Anjola that was still busy with her phone like we weren't even here.
"Anjola,"
"Anjola,"
"Anjo–"
"Toyo, if you want to talk about Peace and what happened at the party, please," she joined her hands together in a clap, "Spare me."
"Can we just have a decent conversation, please?" I really don't understand why Toyo is begging her. Really what does she think she is?
"If Peace isn't sorry, then I don't want to have any conversation." She said with finality in her tone and I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
Sorry for what exactly?
"Peace," she called out to me in an oddly calm voice and I looked up to meet her gaze, her eyes holding something akin to plea.
"Toyosi please," I really don't know what this is all about.
"You know you were wrong, so just apologize and let's put this behind us." The model spoke, surprising me immensely. "Wow! I'm wrong? Really? Wow!" I couldn't believe the rubbish these people were blurting out right now.
"Peace,"
"You know, I didn't do anything wrong that day. What I said was the absolute truth and if you can't bring yourselves to understand it, then that's your fucking problem. Because it's either you're dumb or you're just playing dumb. How can I be wrong? Ehn?" I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped my lips.
"I keep forgetting that I'm the only person that is ever wrong in this friendship na."
"Peace it's not like that."
"But it is like that, Toyosi. It is like that!" I raised my voice higher than I intended causing Anjola to flinch beside me. But I didn't stop.
"Only Peace is the mad one na, that's what everybody will be thinking and be saying cause whenever we're together, you guys do things to gang up against me and make me be shouting up and down like the mad dog you've turned me to na!" I inhaled and exhaled. "Later when I say God forsaken friendship it'll look like I never regarded the friendship from the start, but it's the other way around. You guys," I said pointing my fingers at the both of them, "never regarded me in this friendship. You never did. I was always the fucking third wheel and you can even deny it and say that you didn't notice or I'm exaggerating and over thinking it, because,"
"Because you are! And where's all these ones coming from ehn? If you haven't noticed, you have made us the centre of attention and you know very well that Anjola isn't comfortable with this." She said and I chuckled in disbelief
"I'm talking about how you guys are making me feel so left out and you're concerned about the fact that Anjola is uncomfortable because people are watching us?" I just had to ask because what's this?
"It's five minutes till break over and I don't want to be late for chemistry, so I'll be off now." She said as she packed her things and headed out immediately she was done, leaving Toyo and I in a very uncomfortable silence.
Wahala for who no be perfect student!
Rubbish!
"Peace,"
The oddly calm voice called out to me again, causing me to assert my gaze from the door. "What do you want?" I asked bluntly, hoping she would get the gist and just let me be. For now.
"I don't like it when we fight and it's really bothering that this thing is becoming rather alarming, 'cause since when does Anjola hold grudges?" She asked a question I possibly couldn't have an answer to but she wasn't wrong though. Anjola doesn't hold grudges.
"It just means that you hurt her so much with whatever you said that night hurt her so much."
"But it's the truth," I said punctuating it with a nonchalant shrug.
"It isn't and by the way those words were demeaning."
"The truth is always bitter." I said trying to end this stupid conversation.
"Peace,"
"Toyosi,"
I said almost immediately after my name left her lips. I won't be getting a lecture from my anybody with a totally empty stomach.
"Look, you don't hurt your friends and expect them to smile back at you like it never happened," she spoke the emotions in her eyes morphing into something I've never seen and couldn't place. It was way deeper than pain. But how?
"Trust me when I say words hurt more that anything in this world. Demeaning and deranging words from a supposed loved one can make your whole world fall down at your feet, leaving you bare with nothing to hold on to,"
"Leaving you hopeless, causing your mind to think and rethink things, causing you to loose your sanity,"
What's happening?
"So don't, don't say deranging words you people you claim to love, people you call your friends, Peace." She sighed and I concluded she was done talking.
But I was also confused. Scratch that.
I was concerned.
"Are you okay?" I asked her and she forced a smile before replying. "I guess so?" It sounded like a question and I rested my hands against hers on the table, giving it a slight squeeze before stretching my lips in a slight smile.
"Omoh, one more minute!" She shouted and I fought the urge to roll my eyes because I knew what she was talking about.
"Mama, we're having a joint chemistry class, you'll get to see him." My eyes eventually rolled on their own.
"But it's not the same as walking to the lab with him na," she whined and a low chuckle escaped my lips.
"Wahala be like lover girl o," I teased and she giggled.
Mumu!
"I have to go now o, see you in the lab."
She started packing up her things.
"I pray you kneel down outside, yeye!"
"Get yourself a man!" She said in between her laughter. "And stop being jealous." She said sashaying our of the cafe in all her exquisite glory.
God when?
"Hey,"
I almost snapped my neck with the intensity of the force u used to turn in the direction of the deep, low voice that spoke.
"What do you want now?" I said so nonchalantly, trying to pass a message to him, one that read all shades of 'get out', but being the fool that he is, he didn't get the gist.
"I just wanted to-" he didn't get to finish because he was cut off by the resounding ding dongs of the bell.
Thank God!
"This is where I take my leave." I said standing up and leaving the cafeteria, without sparing him a glance.
