Part 9: The Backstory, part 1
That night I got up and woke Snow up too. "Hey, do you know of any serene places?" I asked her. "This late at night? Go back to sleep." She said groggily, turning over. "Please." I pleaded, looking her in the eyes. "Alright." She said as she got up. She lead me to that fall, we flew up to the cliff and I started to meditate, my memories didn't take too long to start flowing in, of course there was a break in the block that really helped them break through, of course I relived all of it as they flowed in.
15 years earlier
At age of 10
I got up bright and early, "Hello mom, hey dad." I said upon entering the main area of the settlement. "Morning sweetie." My mother said. "Hey son, lookit who's starting to get up early, I tell ya, you've certainly got the hunter's spirit in ya." My father said. "Yeah right, I couldn't hunt a flower in a flower field." I replied. "Oh don't be doubting yourself, you show great signs of the hunter's instinct in you." He told me. "So why are we all sitting around?" I asked. "Don't you remember? This is the day where the chosen elder gives the children their marks." My mother explained. "Oh yeah that's right, I forgot." I said, there are quite a few marks to bear,
1. The hunter's mark
2. The caretaker's mark
3. The observer's mark
4. The elder's mark
5. The doctor's mark
6. The protector's mark
If you can think of more I could add, let me know.
The elder first went to a young dragon, gave them the caretaker's mark, the next, a doctor's mark, the third another caretaker's mark, and so forth until, it was my turn, the elder came to me and bore me with the hunter's mark. "Like I said, you are a true hunter." My father said with a chuckle. I could ask if there was something wrong or whatever but a mark is engraved into the fur and skin, it's permanent. They select very carefully for this reason, however, sometimes it's automatic, the choice of destiny. I thought. I now had a small marking that looked almost like a bow and arrow on my forehead that would remain there for the rest of my life. What I didn't know at the time my mark wasn't only the mark of a hunter, but there was also another mark there that would take some time to fully appear, it was the mark of a protector.
My father took me out to a deeper part of the woods to teach me just how to properly hunt. "This mark on your forehead is the mark of a hunter." He said, pointing to it with his paw. "And- wait a second." He said and got a little closer, almost seeming to be inspecting it. "Son you are a special one, you are the first in millennia to get two marks, it is not unheard of, however it's the rarest thing ever. That symbol you bear is the symbol of both a hunter, and a protector." He said. See these markings aren't scarred into us but rather a mysterious process only a chosen elder can trigger once you reach a certain age, the elder does something that triggers its appearance that is if it's chosen by destiny, but if a selected elder feels destiny's choice is wrong, based on their knowledge of the dragon, they choose.
From the age of 5 our marks are predetermined by our bodies, as science states, but it is determined by destiny, otherwise if not it's the elder's educated choice, it takes a chosen elder to trigger the the markings' appearance upon the child 'comming of age,' the age being ten years old. Each marking is a different color, mine was pure white on my forehead, sometimes they glow as they become visible until they have become completely visible, usually being almost instant, other times they just appear, or they'll appear over the span of 3 days. In ancient times our entire kind would do this, why? I have no clue. But to this day only few groups of us do this, I believe that only two groups if not only mine still do this, but I'd bet that I'm wrong about that.
It's rare to have two markings, but there hasn't been a single one of our species with the marking of protection and another marking since ancient times.
