Page 12: The Backstory, part 4
They started walking in a direction, I looked back at my fallen parents, I felt remorse, regret, guilt, grief, all the sad feelings. I am so sorry... may you find peace, wherever you are now. I thought, with one more tear drop I had drifted off to asleep, I was mentally and physically drained. The sound of talking woke me, I found myself on the ground next to what appeared to be a campfire. "So where exactly did you find him?" Someone asked. "He was in a tree near the cursed forest, his parents were burned to death, but he didn't have a single burn mark on him." Another replied. I got up after becoming completely aware.
"That's certainly an interesting birth mark he has on him too." The one said, it was early morning so there was a bit of a cold draft, I looked at the campfire, but when I looked, I couldn't look away. The events of last night were pulled to my vision along with the feeling of guilt and fear. I sat there, not moving not even flinching. I didn't move, not even after the fire died down. I flinched at a paw touching my shoulder. Startled, I jumped back. I calmed down but was still shaking. "You okay little guy?" The girl from before asked. "Y-yeah I'm f-fine." I said. She appeared shocked I even responded. "What's your name?" She asked. "K-Kai, my name is Kai." I answered.
"Y-yours?" I asked. "Retra." She said, "I take it you're around ten years old, given your size and such." "Uh yeah actually, so I haven't learned to fly yet." I said, "much less learn how to use my abilities." I lied. "Okay." She said. I knew what she was thinking of doing, I wasn't planning on making the same mistake again. So yeah, I was going to accept it this time, c'mon, let's go meet your new tutor. I was already beginning to think of Retra as a mother, er well, my new mother, I mean she's certainly showing me the care of a parent, and honestly at this point, she was the only one I could turn to. She lead me to another area.
"Now remember, you can only carry a certain amount of weight, your wingspan adds to that weight you carry along with your body weight, however because of our wings' build we can car-" The instructor cut herself off at the sight of Retra approaching. I was hiding behind a tree, barely poking my head out, I felt nervous. "Oh hello Retra." She said. "Sorry am I interrupting?" Retra asked. "No, I was just telling the young ones here facts about their wings as well as flight patterns to match wind currents, anyways, what do you need?" The instructor replied. "Remember that child me and my mate found last night?" Retra asked.
"Yeah I remember, even asleep he seemed shaken up." The instructor answered. "Okay, so ahm, mind if he joins you." "No not at all, where is the young one?" "He's here." Retra replied as she motioned me to come over. I reluctantly walked over there with my head down, literally. "He seems a bit shy." The instructor said. "Well we don't really know what he went through, all we know is what I told you." Retra said. "My entire home burned down, along with my friends, my family, everyone that lived there, gone." I said, snapping my dactylies, small sparks flying off when I did, only I was able to see them because of how small they were. "Just like that." I continued.
"I warned them of the fire, but they didn't bother to evacuate because 'it was going to rain soon.' " I quoted. "I went home, hoping the fire didn't reach the small den, I got my parents out of there after putting out what fires were on them, but I was too late, they were already dead." I said sadly. Not loud enough for the others to hear but only loud enough for these two to hear. "Oh... oh no." The two looked at me with a solemn (probably the wrong word.) look. "Well you can go ahead and join the others alright?" The instructor said. "Alright." I said and sat in the grass next to a random person. "Hello there." Someone said.
