Our Long Journey Has Just Begun
Dreamworld...
TEN-YEAR-OLD READER'S POV
I was in my Grandfather's garage and we were going camping again. Grandfather drove the jeep and I smiled brightly because this was so exciting. Grandfather looked at me and he asked me.
"What's with the smile on your face? are you that excited to go camping?"
"I am, it's because I'm going camping with my favourite grandfather!"
Grandfather chuckled and then we got to a campsite. He stopped the jeep and then we got out and I smiled at the landscape. I looked around and we were at the large lake where we saw other fishermen and campers. Grandfather got the camping gear from the trunk and then we got to work on setting up camp.
"Now hold this peg here and then be careful when you're hammering it down, I got a few bruises on my thumbs when I was your age."
"Hehe, okay."
I started to hammer down the peg while avoiding hitting my thumb. Grandfather got some firewood and then he started to start up the fire. Grandfather got two stones together and then he tries to get them to spark but, it wasn't happening. I giggled a little after setting up the tent and I went into my pouch and I got the box of matches with me.
"Good thing I came prepared."
"Where did you get those matches?"
"Grandmother gave them to me, she knew that you were gonna have trouble with the campfire."
"*Chuckles* good point."
Grandfather said before ruffling my hair. After setting up camp, Grandfather got the fishing gear and he then said to me.
"All right, time to go fishing for dinner."
"Yay!"
Grandfather chuckled when he saw my reaction and then we got to the edge of the lake. We sat by the lake for a few hours trying to catch fish for dinner and eventually I caught my first trout. I smiled proudly and then Grandfather said to me.
"Well done, darling, now all we gotta do is cook it now."
Grandfather and I got back to camp and then we began to make dinner. While the fish was being cooked on a skewer, I looked up and the stars looked beautiful tonight.
"The stars are so beautiful tonight, aren't they Grandfather?"
"They sure are, (Y/n)."
"Do you remember the first time when you brought me out here?"
I asked as I sat next to him and he nodded his head with a smile.
"How can I forget? you kept complaining how bored you were and there was no wifi here, you were moaning the whole time when we were here but, eventually you began to like it."
"Only because I couldn't stand being near my parents, Grandfather, why do they expect so much from me? like getting good grades and hanging out in the 'right' crowd?"
Grandfather thought for a moment and he told me.
"Well, it's because of your father, my idiot son, wanted to have an heir for the business so, he's trying to make sure that he's giving you the life that he never got, your Grandmother and I were poor and we didn't have a fancy house or a lot of money and your father's education wasn't that brilliant either until he met your mother."
Grandfather patted my head and he continued.
"However, I won't let him control you like this, as long as I still have life in my body I will do whatever it takes to make sure you have a happy life and get good friends, after all, that Leo fella seems like a nice boy."
"Hehe, you really think so?"
"Of course, let me tell you something now, (Y/n), it doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor, you still have the right to choose your friends and who you hang out with."
"Really?"
"Yes, I mean look at us, I'm your family yes but, we're like best friends."
I smiled brightly when he said this and then the fish was ready to eat. Grandfather gave me the bigger one and we ate dinner while talking and laughing together.
DREAM ENDS...
READER'S POV (Present day)
I slowly opened my eyes and I was back in my room but, not in my world. I sighed a little before getting out of bed. I changed into my casual wear before going into the kitchen to make breakfast. I looked in the fridge to see what we had leftover and I decided to make some pancakes with syrup and berries since we were gonna have a long journey ahead of us since today is the day Noctis goes to Altissia, the capital of Accordo, to marry Lady Lunafreya.
I was humming to my favourite song until I heard Noctis walking into the room.
"Morning, Noctis, you all set to go and see Lady Luna today?"
"Just about, but, did you know that my old man wants to see me before we leave?"
"Gladio mentioned it but, in my opinion, he probably wanted to see you before we go besides, who knows when we'll be back."
"Hmpf, why should I bother seeing him? it's not like he's gonna die while we're gone."
My eyes widen in shock when he said this.
'Except he is, but, there's no way I can tell him that. I know what to do.'
I let the pancakes cook for a little while and I sat across the table from Noctis.
"Noctis, when my Grandfather got sick, I didn't want to see him again because I couldn't face the fact that I was gonna be alone. However, the last time I saw him was on his deathbed and that was my mistake, back then, I should have spent more time with him before he got worse. Look, all I'm saying is, see your old man one last time before the peace treaty starts and before we leave, we don't know if these people will agree to it or something bad might happen to him."
Noctis looked at me surprised and he asked me.
"You make it sound like you know something bad is gonna happen while we're gone."
"I don't, I'm only telling this because we don't know when we'll be back or if this peace treaty will be successful if you leave it too late you'll regret it later."
Noctis understood this and he sighs in defeat.
"Fair point, all right fine, you've convinced me."
"Good to hear."
I said with a smile before checking the pancakes. I placed the pancakes on the plate before adding the syrup and the berries onto them. I served them to Noctis and he smiled at them.
"Wow, these look delicious."
"Better eat them while they're still warm and also, here's some tea."
I said as I served some tea for myself and Noctis. He took a sip of tea and he smiled a little.
"This is good."
"Glad you think so."
I sat down and I ate my breakfast with Noctis. After we had our breakfast, we got our stuff and we left the apartment. We got to the castle and along with the others, we met up with King Reggis. We stood in the throne room and then King Reggis told us.
"The decreed hour is come. Set forth with my blessing, Prince Noctis."
Noctis bowed and he said to him.
"Thank you...your majesty."
"Take your leave, and go in the grace of the gods."
"Right."
Noctis said before leaving the room. We watched him leave and then we bowed to the king before catching up to Noctis. I was about to follow after them until the king spoke up.
"Wait, (Y/n)."
I stopped in my tracks and I turned to look at King Reggis and he approached me.
"I wanted to say thanks for looking our for my son and I'm sorry for suspecting you for being a spy."
"Oh no, it's all right, your majesty, I completely understand why you'd be suspicious of me, especially since I'm from a different realm."
"Well, let's put it behind us, besides, Noctis has a long journey ahead of him and he's gonna need all the support he can get."
"But, I'm not a fighter like him and the others, what can I do to help him?"
"Just be there for him and look after him, besides, I can't remember the last time I saw him smile, he's been doing that ever since he met you."
"Really?" I asked in a surprised tone.
'Whoa, I had no idea but then again, he has been acting oddly since I've been around, oh boy, I hope he's not getting too attached to me.'
"Before you go, there's something I want to give you."
King Reggis looked at one of his servants and he had gotten a box. He opened it and it was an amulet that has weird engraving on it.
"What is that?"
"It's an amulet that was gifted to us by our ancestors, it said that one day, the lost soul will appear from a different world will come and aid the chosen one on his journey."
'He must mean the prophecy about Noctis being trapped inside of that crystal...'
I thought to myself as I remembered the storyline from the game. King Reggis puts the amulet around my neck as he continued.
"I believe that lost soul is you, (Y/n)."
"Me? how can it be me?"
"You'll need to find that our for yourself, the amulet will be both your guide and protector."
"Thank you, your majesty, I'll keep it safe."
I spoke with a smile before leaving the throne to catch up with the others. One I got outside the others were waiting for me.
"There you are, what did my old man want?" Noctis asked me.
"Oh nothing, except, he wanted to say thanks to me for looking out for you and he also apologised for suspecting me a spy from an enemy army."
"Hmpf, it's about time."
Noctis spoke with a smirk. I shook my head at him and then Gladio noticed the amulet around my neck.
"What's that?"
"Just a little something from King Reggis, apparently, this amulet is supposed to be my guide and protector, the king also told me about some legend about a lost soul appearing into this world and assisting the prince."
"I see..."
Gladio said before looking away from me and then someone called out to Noctis.
"Your Highness!"
We turned around and it was the King again and he carefully went down the steps to come over to Noctis.
"What now?" Noctis mumbled before walking over to the King.
"I fear I have left too much unsaid. You place a great burden on those who bear with you."
"You're one to talk."
"I ask not that you guide my wayward son, merely that you remain at his side."
Ignus bowed and he said to the King.
"Indeed your grace."
"We'll see the Prince to Altissia if it's the last thing we see."
"Yeah what he said."
Gladio and Ignus spoke to the King. I nodded my head and then Noctis told us.
"Hate to break this up, but, Cor's got the motor running, Drautos, he's in your hands."
Noctis told Drautos before walking down the steps.
"And another thing," The King said to Noctis before looking at him again.
"Do mind your manners around your bride-to-be."
"Your Majesty, as well. Try to mind yours around our esteemed guests from Nifilem."
"You have no cause for concern."
"Nor do you."
"Take heed. Once you set forth you cannot turn back."
"You think I would?"
"I only need to know you are ready to leave home behind," The king spoke in a concerned tone.
"Don't know about you, but, I'm ready as I'll ever be."
"Take care on the long road. Wheresoever you should go, the line of Lucis goes with you."
The king placed his hand on Noctis' shoulder and he told him.
"Walk tall, my son."
Noctis walked past me and then he walked towards the car. I looked at King Reggis and he said to me.
"Take good care of him, (Y/n)."
"I will, your majesty, don't worry and...thanks again, for taking me in."
"You're welcome, now get going."
I bowed to him before catching up with the others. I sat in the back seat, between Gadlio and Noctis as we left the crown city. I looked over my shoulder and I watched the sight of the city disappearing in the distance.
'This might be the last time I'll see the crown city, it's too bad, I really loved living there but, I gotta let these events happen especially since I couldn't tell the others about Nifelheim betraying the King, murdering him and stealing the crystal.'
I looked straight ahead and I smiled a little.
'But for now, there's nothing to worry about. Let's just enjoy the view and the ride, besides, our long journey has just begun.'
