CHAPTER 10

CAMERON HAD JUST GOTTEN OUT OF THE SHOWER, SHIVERING AS SHE WALKED DOWNSTAIRS IN ONLY A TOWEL,
"I think something is wrong with the water. We paid the bill, didn't we?" She asked, taking a bite of the tater tots that sat on the sheet pan,
"We're out of water?" Fiona asked, her eyes going wide,
Not another thing to worry about.
"No, it was cold." Cameron glanced at the water heater that sat in the kitchen, "It's a gas problem, right?"
"The oven was working." Fiona commented and Lip moved from the kitchen table to take a closer look at the water heater,
"Pilot is out."
"Shit."
Cameron went upstairs to change while the older boys tried to fix the water heater. Once she slipped on a pair of jeans and a sweater, she went back down to help Fiona with feeding the kids. She set Liam in his high chair and gave him some potatoes and eggs before glancing around, "Where's Debbie?"
"Outside."
With a sigh, Cam headed outside. She stood on the porch, watching as Debbie pushed a bag of potatoes wrapped in a scarf around in the broken stroller,
"Debbie, come in and eat your breakfast, okay? You're up next in the shower once the boys get the heater fixed." The older Gallagher called out,
"I want to play for a while. Ask Carl if he'll come out and get in the stroller." The redhead responded,
Cameron raised her eyebrows, "The last time you asked Carl to play, you were locked in the basement for half a day."
"That was on purpose." The younger girl responded with an eye roll, "And we were playing 'Loser Goes to Gitmo'."
"C'mon, let's go. The sooner you get this done, the sooner you can go back to playing with your potatoes." Cameron led the girl inside, and the redhead pushed the stroller into the yard aggressively.
As they walked into the kitchen, Cameron left Debbie to grab a cup of coffee to warm her up, "Oh, man, yeah..." Lip and Ian stood, "That's, uh, it's dead."
"You sure?" Fiona asked,
"Uh-huh. The element's rusted out." Lip answered,
"Anyone want to make some Tollhouse cookies with me?" Debbie asked to anyone in the room but no one payed her any attention,
"How much to replace it?" The eldest asked,
"Uh, two bills used, four new."
"Shit." Cameron sighed into her mug,
"How about a pie?" Debbie moved clothes from the counter to make some room, "I can get started on the crust."
"Go take your shower." Fiona ordered her as the redhead went into the cabinet to grab her ingredients,
"I... wanna... make... pie."
"You know what? Hand me the obits. Maybe, uh, we can scrounge a dead person's water heater." Lip suggested and Cameron handed him the newspaper, the teenager immediately flipped to the obituary page, "Ah, Mrs. Dombrowski."
"Oh, the, uh, shaky neck lady?" Ian took a bite of his breakfast, "I thought she drowned a couple years ago."
"No. Mrs. Goga had the shaky neck, and she drowned in her own vomit last Easter." Debbie corrected him,
Cameron watched as the girl set all the baking supplies down on the counter. The brunette grabbed the boxed mix and put it back in the cupboard, "No pie. Get in the shower. I'm not saying it again."
Fiona snatched a toy from Carl's hand, which the boy was planning on microwaving, "Carl, no." She shooed him out of the kitchen, "I went to school with Kenny Dombrowski. Think he had a crush on me."
"Her wake's this morning." Lip stood and ushered Ian to his feet, "Let's go. Up, up, up."
"Can I come?" Debbie asked the older boys before she began to spin in a circle,
Lip, Cameron, and Fiona shared a confused look, "Um... no." He answered before the boys left.
"Can you text Veronica? Ask if the kids can shower that hers?" Cameron asked her sister,
"Yeah, I'm sure she wouldn't mind." Fiona approached the younger girl, "Debbie, what is going on with you?"
She stopped spinning and looked up at Fiona with a guilty look, "Nothing."
Cameron sighed, not wanting to push her before going over to Carl and Liam. She sniffed the top of Carl's head and cringed, "Shower. After Debbie. Towel and robe, upstairs. Go."
Liam began to babble and Cameron reached for him, "And you need to learn how to change your own diaper."
Cameron headed for the stairs and turned to Fiona, motioning for her to talk to Debbie.
Fiona went over to Kev and V's to get Liam and Carl washed up while Cameron cleaned up the kitchen.
The kitchen door opened and Cam glanced up to see Steve walk in with a coffee in hand, "Well, look at you, just letting yourself into people's houses." She smiled,
He held up the Starbucks cup, "Tall grande latte, two shots."
Her grin grew, "Sugar?"
"Absolutely." She snatched the coffee from his hand and took a sip,
Steve came up behind her, pinning her hips to the counter while he wrapped his arms around her waist, "Kids home?"
Cameron shook her head as she swallowed the coffee, "Mm...Boys're out getting a water heater, Debbie's at the park, Fiona took Carl and Liam to V's for a shower." She informed him as he brushed her hair away from her neck,
Steve placed his fingers under her top, "So..."
"No." Cameron pushed him away, "I'm up to my ass in housework."
"That's why I'm taking you to a long, deep, leisurely lunch." Steve smirked, watching as she went to the table and grabbed the milk,
"Lunch?"
"It's a euphemism." Steve responded,
Cameron raised her eyebrows, "How quaint."
"Or, would you like a demon dog and a quick fuck over at the Sheridan?" He asked her blunty,
She almost choked on her own spit, "I have to work later."
"So call out sick." Steve attempted to convince her,
"Ha." Cameron let out a fake laugh, "And miss out on a chance to make money? Can't afford that."
"How much to convince you to take the night off?" Steve questioned,
She turned to face him, feeling a little irritated that he wasn't getting the hint, "You are not paying me to fuck you."
Steve kissed her cheek, "No, I couldn't pay you enough." He leaned in to kiss her on the mouth, but the sound of a thud coming from the second floor caused Cameron to dodge his lips,
"Did you hear that?"
"No." Steve groaned, placing his lips on her neck,
"You didn't hear that?" She asked again after there was more rustling coming from the upstairs,
"You trying to change the subject?"
Cameron rolled her eyes and pulled away from Steve, heading towards the living room. Another thud resonated throughout the house and the Gallagher woman immediately went to the stairs to grab the wooden baseball bat that was hanging from a nail,
"Woah, woah, give me the bat." Steve hissed from behind her,
"What? Why?" Cameron asked quietly, not trying to alert the intruder,
"Just..." He grabbed the bat and stood in front of her.
The two inched up the stairs, peering around the corner and down the hallway. They didn't spot anyone, not in any of the bedrooms either. There was another thump coming from Debbie and Liam's closed bedroom door,
The door opened and Steve swung the bat. Cameron yelled 'wait!' as she spotted her younger sister stepping out from her bedroom and Steve halted the bat.
Debbie flinched and dropped the hairbrush she was holding, "Debbie! Jesus!" Steve let out a sigh of relief,
"Thought you went to the park." Cameron smiled, placing a hand on her chest to calm her rapidly beating heart,
"I..." Debbie's eyes flickered between the two adults, "...came back."
"Are you okay?"
"Katie Crasden's having a party." Debbie pouted disappointedly,
The older Gallagher raised an eyebrow at the unfamiliar name, "Katie Crasden?"
"Two streets over."
"And she... didn't invite you?" Steve asked her,
"She's only three." Debbie clarified,
Cameron crossed her arms over her chest, wondering why Debbie would be upset about a three year old having a party, "What happened?"
"Well, I was just walking past, and her dad, he..." Debbie trailed off,
"Her dad did what?" Cameron's mind immediately went to 'he touched her'. Her hand moved to grab the bat from Steve, but he pulled it away from her,
"He was laughing and playing with them, and it just... It wasn't fair." Debbie pouted,
"What wasn't fair? What?"
"Everything!" She exclaimed,
Cameron felt bad. Debbie never spoke about any of her friends, never went over to anybody's house, and always seemed to be playing by herself,
"So I, I, um... I stole something." Debbie admitted,
"Oh, that's okay, honey." Cameron wrapped her arms around her younger sister, "As long as no one touched you."
They heard a toddler speaking in the bedroom, and Cameron lifted her head. Liam wasn't here, not to her knowledge, and he wasn't able to speak more than a couple of words yet.
"Debbie?"
She avoided eye contact and Cameron was worried about what Debbie had taken. The older Gallagher stepped into the bedroom and her eyes went wide at the sight of a little blonde child sitting in the middle of the room, wearing pink lipstick and wearing a dress.
"Who the hell is that?"
