Tony freaks out

Steve's view
"I'm so terribly sorry," I heard Bucky's voice.
I opened my eyes, blinking. And there he sat. I was so happy to see Bucky here, it meant my plan had worked. I reached for his hand with the greatest of effort "Bucky it's not your fault."
He looked at me, his expression so full of confusion and pain that I doubted if he really remembered everything "What do you remember?" I struggled to keep my eyes open.
He narrowed his eyes "You" he looked at our hands clasped together and smiled slightly "us. Other than that, just bits and pieces of my time before " he swallowed, but I knew what he meant even so.
I would have loved to jump up and beat up every Hydra agent one by one for what they had done to him. "It's okay, we can do this," I reassured him.
He started to shift around on the chair and get nervous "Steve I," he faltered briefly "I'm not going to stay. I just wanted to know if you were alright, but now I have to go."
My heart skipped a beat "Buck why?"
He snorted "you're still asking that? Look at you, I almost killed you!" he jumped up and tried to run out of the room.
I grabbed him by the arm with all the strength I could muster "Buck, stay!"
Bucky turned around with a pained look on his face "What if I hurt you again?"
"You won't! We'll work it out, but promise me you'll stay!" I looked at him desperately, I couldn't let him leave again, I wouldn't be able to take it, plus Hydra was still out there.
I breathed a sigh of relief as Bucky dropped back into his chair "Okay." he agreed hesitantly.
I could still see doubt in his eyes, I placed a hand on his cheek "We'll figure it out." I repeated.
"Do you need some time alone?" a voice sounded from the doorway. I turned my head and saw a grinning Sam holding two coffee mugs.
I just rolled my eyes and smiled at Bucky who looked quite panicked "You have some catching up to do." I smiled and demonstratively took his hand in mine.
Then I turned back to Sam "Pass on come on in." I straightened up, most of my wounds had already started to heal. Only now did I notice the morphine tube that had been stuck in my arm. Sighing I pulled it out, when would the doctors realise that the stuff wasn't working on me?
"So Cap" Sam offered the coffee to Buck who just passed it to me which made me smile "any plan?"
Yeah what was the plan? Theoretically the Winter Soldier was at the top of every wanted list in the world. But that Bucky and the Soldier were two different people, no one would care. I decided that we would go to Avengers Tower. Tony would listen to us and in the tower Bucky would be safe and could get used to the new world. "We're going to see Tony in Avengers Tower. Throw over my robe." Bucky handed me a pair of jeans and a T-shirt that had been hanging over an armchair and I staggered into the bathroom. I splashed water on my face to dispel the slight dizziness.
"Should he even be on his feet yet?" I heard Sam ask.
Buck's reply made me smile "You're welcome to try and stop him."
Amused, I turned off the tap "You do know I can hear you, right?" I struggled to slip into my jeans and t-shirt and put on socks. When I stepped out of the bathroom Sam and Bucky were both unusually quiet. I put on a jacket "Let's go, let's go annoy Tony." I said sarcastically.
Bucky pulled his hood down low on his face, the sleeves of his jacket thankfully covering his metal arm. Sam whistled through his fingers and not two seconds later a taxi pulled up.
"Where to?" the driver asked, bored.
"Avengers Tower." replied Sam. The driver nodded as if he picked up two superheroes every day and drove off. After he dropped us off, I started to get nervous too. There was a very good chance that Tony would just call the FBI, but I could hope and I wouldn't ask permission. I wouldn't ask permission for Bucky to stay in the tower. I ran a hand through my hair and walked through the front door.
"Welcome to Avengers Tower Captian Rogers!" Fridays voice, so normal to me, made Bucky flinch and look around nervously.
I smiled reassuringly at him "It's okay, it's just Friday, Tony's artificial intelligence."
"Huh?" Bucky looked at me confused.
"I'll explain later right?" I answered him "Friday is Tony in the building?" I asked Friday.
"Mr Stark is currently on the 25th floor in his workshop." the AI informed me.
Great in the garage, where he had access to lots of suits, he should recognise Bucky before I came to explain. "Can you tell him to come to the living room on 30?" I asked Friday.
I walked into the lift with Sam and Bucky and we shot up. When the lift door opened, it was a huge living room, several couches criss-crossed the room, a huge TV bolted to the wall and a kitchen in the corner, Tony was such a glutton.
Speaking of Tony, he had just come out of one of the lifts and looked anything but happy, as he always did when someone stopped him from tinkering. "So Captian Igloo, I hope you have a good explanation........." he looked at my face, which was covered in bruises, and faltered "What happened to you?"
" Collision with Hydra." I replied dryly, there was no way Tony hadn't heard about the SHILD thing.
The inventor nodded "Yeah, I heard about it, it's really weird. I would have helped but no one invited me to the party." he pouted.
I started to get to the point I was actually here for. But I was too slow, because apparently Tony had recognised Bucky as a Winter Soldier and really shrugged, "Rogers, are you out of your mind? You can't bring a terrorist into my tower!" he snapped at me and pointed his finger at Bucky.
I snorted "Tony if you would let me explain......."
"You have half a minute!" he grumbled.
I took a deep breath "I knew Bucky before he was in the ice. Hydra captured him and processed his brain into mush. The Winter Soldier is not Bucky. He's remembered again and can't help what he's done over the last few decades."
Tony frowned "What do you expect me to do now? Am I supposed to just take your word for it?"
" Man Tony why do you always have to be so damn stubborn?" i shot back.
Bucky shoved a strand of hair behind my ear uncomfortably "Steve leave it, it's not worth it...."
"No Buck!" I firmly contradicted him "Tony either he stays or you call the FBI something else won't be left for you!"
Tony looked back and forth between the two of us "Are you...." he left the question open ended but I knew exactly what he meant.
"Yes" I hissed "but that's not the point Tony. "
Tony just shrugged "Fine by me." he turned and walked back to the lift.
Sam cleared his throat behind me "I'll be off then." he said and disappeared into a lift as well.
I turned to Bucky who was looking at me gratefully, but also fearfully. "What's Buck?"
"You just told him we were dating?" he ran his hand through his long hair.
right there was something else "Buck things have changed. Loving the same sex isn't illegal anymore, there are still people who don't accept it, but most people find it perfectly normal."
Buck smiled with relief.
"Come I'll show you to our room." it was a single room in itself but the bed was big enough for both of us. I took Buck by the hand and pulled him to the lift. I inhabited the 48th floor alone, except when Thor and Loki were around, which had been rather less lately. I led Bucky to my room. It was quite open and simple. In the middle of the room was a big box-spring bed, against the wall was a bookcase, opposite the bed was a TV, which I almost never used. Next to the bed was a door leading to a spacious bathroom, on the glass front, which could be darkened and gave a beautiful view of New York City, was a large dining table, which I usually used as a drawing table. Bucky looked around in disbelief.
"Do you want to go take a shower?" I gently brought him out of his stare and he just nodded.
I fetched robes from me that should fit him and gently pressed them into his hand. "Take as much time as you need yes."
Bucky nodded and disappeared into the bathroom. I went back to the closet and picked out a pair of sweatpants and a loose t-shirt to sleep in because it was late in the evening.
I heard Bucky turn on the water. I changed and lay down on the bed. Only now could I realise all that had happened today. I had Bucky back, the leader of the Hydra had been taken out and I had survived it all. Bucky came carefully stomping out of the bathroom, his wet hair falling in his face. He came to my bedside but seemed to hesitate for a moment.
"Buck come here." I held out my arms and he crawled in. I began to play with his long hair. His face relaxed and he fell asleep with his head on my chest. A short time later I followed him into the land of dreams.

I woke up in the middle of the night. I turned around and saw Bucky tossing and turning. He was covered in sweat and muttering something under his breath. I shook him. "Buck, Buck wake up." but he didn't wake up. Instead he started screaming. I shook him harder and yelled at him "Buck wake up!" finally he widened his eyes and looked at me in panic.
"I killed them Steve, all those people, they were innocent and I killed them." he sobbed. I just hugged him, I didn't talk at all, just held him and let him cry. After he calmed down I looked at him "Buck that wasn't you okay, that was Hydra."
Bucky scowled and shook his head, "It doesn't matter Steve, Hydra or not. I'm a monster!"
I took his face in my hands, he wasn't allowed to think that about himself "Buck you are the kindest, kindest, most compassionate person I know. You're not a monster okay."
He nodded and leaned back against me. It took him a long time to fall back asleep, I stayed awake the whole time and even when he was asleep again. I looked at the sleeping Bucky, when he slept he looked so peaceful. Like he had never been to Hydra. I knew I couldn't erase the things he had been through there from his memory, but I would do anything to make him feel some happiness again.
