The downfall
pov. Steve
The nine soldiers routinely marched through the narrow corridor at a run. Six of them were in front of Tony, Marry, Darlene, Sam's mum, and me, with two covering the path behind us. Even though I wouldn't mind fighting with one of the nurses, and looking at Tony's clenched fists, he wouldn't mind it either. Speaking of which, it's strange that we hadn't run into any of these crazy people yet, because we had already come to the first junction.
"Where?" Rhodey's father had his pistol pointed at the ground and looked at me questioningly.
I pointed to the left corridor, which after a few steps led around the corner and then to the teenagers' quarters. With a nod from Rhodey's dad, the squad started moving again.
Reaching the corner, one of the men peeked around the corner "Damn!" he growled quietly and backed away again. I couldn't prevent a slight grin from creeping onto my face because I knew exactly what that meant, we would soon have to pass a few so-called nurses.
"About 15 men," the soldier narrowed his eyes briefly, as if to remember something. "Elector stools and batons." I glanced over at Tony to make sure he was okay, but he didn't look like he was about to have a mental breakdown.
A quiet click caught my attention, one by one the soldiers secured their weapons, after all, the men they were fighting against should still be alive in the end so that they could rot in prison for their crimes. The footsteps of the nurses approaching became louder and louder. I balled my hands into fists, I wasn't going to be squeamish about the men who had done who knows what to my oldest friend. Beside me, I could hear Tony breathing heavily, but he also had a determined expression on his face and his hands balled into fists. Marry looked so angry that I was glad her anger wasn't directed at me.
The guards of this prison came rushing around the corner with their batons drawn. But these amateurs had no chance against the soldiers, who were trained at the highest level. The first one ran into Jack's outstretched arm, rolled over and lay there unconscious. I heard Tony snort in amusement next to me. As if his colleagues didn't understand that they could only lose if one of them was knocked out within seconds, they continued to attack the soldiers.
The men simply ducked under the blows, blocked the punches and once the orderlies did land a punch, it was their last and they lay unconscious on the ground. Suddenly one of them managed to sneak past the soldiers in front of us, I only noticed that he was sneaking up on Marry when it was almost too late. "Marry be careful!" I warned her, trying to get the man's attention. Without any fear, Marry looked the man in the eyes as he came toward her with his arms outstretched and kneed him in his crown jewels. "This is for my son!" she hissed at him as he writhed in pain and gave him an upward hack so strong that he was knocked out.
Impressed, I blew out my breath. "Respect." I muttered.
Marry just looked at the unconscious man in front of her and then at Darlene "I'm not going to stand here anymore, I'm going to go look for Bucky now!" and before I could stop her, she started weaving through the fighting men, Darlene right behind her.
"For God's sake, you should stay behind us!" Rhodey's father shouted after them while he held one opponent in a headlock and temporarily incapacitated another with a well-aimed kick to the stomach. "Hogan, follow them!" he ordered a red-haired soldier who had just grabbed his opponent by the collar of his coat and incapacitated him with a blow from the pistol butt to the face.
The man nodded, dropped the limp man and stormed after the two mothers. I exchanged a look with Tony, we both seemed to be thinking the same thing and then we ran off at the same time. I elbowed my way through the men, occasionally grabbing a key card for the doors from an unconscious man. I skillfully ignored the "Guys, come back here immediately!" just like Tony and continued running down the narrow hallway. "What rooms do you think they're in?" panted Tony, out of breath, next to me. I shrugged and pulled out the key card. "There's only one way to find out." Just before we turned the corner to the first rooms, there was a terrible crash, followed by painful groans and wild cursing.
I had a hunch that was confirmed when Tony and I skidded around the corner at full speed. Hogan hopped back and forth on one leg in front of the closed door and, with a grimace of pain, held the leg with which he had kicked in the door a second ago. "Muscles aren't always the solution." I heard Tony mutter next to me and had to suppress a grin as I pulled out the key card. "Here," I handed the card to Marry, "this will open the door." Before I could even blink, Marry had swiped the card through the slot provided and the door popped open. I looked over the women's heads, there was someone in the room, but it wasn't Bucky or Sam. It was a black-haired boy, about fifteen years old, who, when we saw him, hid in the far corner of his room.
"It's okay, we'll get you out of here." Tony smiled encouragingly at the boy. The black-haired man eyed Tony slightly suspiciously. It would be a lot of work to convince him that he could trust us. While Tony was still talking calmly to the boy, I took two steps back to Marry, who was already staring down the hallway with a frown. "Tony and I are picking up the others from the rooms." I ran my fingers through my hair. It would be quite a bit of work, but we couldn't just leave them, some of them still children, sitting in their rooms scared, that would be cruel. "Dividing us up again is not a good strategy." Hogan interjected.
I rubbed my eyes with my fingers "We're not going anywhere then" I pointed in the direction we came from "as soon as we've collected everyone from the rooms, we'll go back to meet your people, besides" I watched "I don't think they'll wait any longer." "All right." sighed Hogan. As soon as the words left his lips, Marry and Darlene ran off. Hogan gave us one last doubtful look and then jogged after the two women who opened one door after the other but kept running because they couldn't find what they were looking for. I turned my gaze back into the room where Tony had sat down next to the boy. To be on the safe side, I stopped at the door frame, who knew if I had ever run into the boy when I was a carer here. When I thought about Leila's reaction to me, I thought it would be best to let Tony talk to them, because if anyone could convince these people to trust us, it would be Tony.

I was still on the floor, in the same position as a few hours ago. I just didn't have the willpower to get up. I had heard Bucky scream again. I wiped away a tear that had escaped from my eye and didn't even sit up when the door opened with a squeak. "Go away, just get out!" I still had my head facing the wall, but who else could it be but Oskar?
"Sammy?" came a broken voice from the door. I immediately sat up, that couldn't be right. I turned around in disbelief "Mum?" I blurted out. I doubted my own sanity, but when I briefly squinted my eyes, opened them again and I still saw the woman who had raised me standing in the doorway, I allowed myself to do something for the first time that I had never done before had suppressed with all his might. I allowed myself to hope that the person in the doorway was actually my mom and not just a drug hallucination. I allowed myself to hope that my nightmare was finally over and that she wouldn't die or vanish into thin air in the next moment. My hands hurt as I dug my fingernails into my flesh. Relieved, the corners of my mouth twitched upwards into a kind of smile, but I was too exhausted to smile completely. I had been so focused on reassuring myself that I was in reality that I hadn't noticed Mum getting closer.
Only when I looked up again did I realize that she had already crossed half of the room. I jumped up as quickly as my body would allow me, swayed briefly as I felt dizzy, and then ran toward her. I sobbed in relief as I wrapped my arms around her and she was still there, not disappearing into thin air. Hundreds of questions ran through my head, how could she be here? I felt her arms rub my back "Oh my poor boy." She murmured quietly, pushed me away from her and, shakily, stroked the bruises on my jaw without actually touching them. Another tear joined the countless ones that had already rolled down her face.
"Mum" I removed her hand from my face "I'm fine." Even though my body should have been numb with pain, I didn't feel any of my injuries because as my gaze slid over my mum's shoulder and fell on Marry, who had a hand over her mouth, adrenaline flooded my veins. "I have to find Bucky." I let go of the woman's hand in front of me and walked towards the door.
Footsteps behind me told me that Mum was following me. "Sam, you don't stay in this building a second longer than necessary!" She grasped my forearm, before her hand hadn't even reached halfway around it, but now it was so thin that she could almost reach all the way around it. She lost her breath for a moment as she noticed my weight loss, which until now had been hidden from her by the oversized clothing.
I ignored the horror in her eyes and looked at her determinedly, "Mum, I'm not leaving here without Bucky." When she still looked at me doubtfully, I lowered my voice a little. "What would you do if it was Dad?" I loved Bucky so much that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life with anyone else. Mom's brown eyes shone with tears like they always did when I mentioned Dad, but she gave a barely perceptible nod. "Okay." she looked out the door "but this is the last room." I looked back at Marry, who was pressing her lips together in a struggle for self-control. Standing next to her was a red-haired man who I hadn't noticed until now.
But I didn't have the time or brain capacity to ask who he was at the moment. All of my concentration was focused on getting to Bucky. "I'm sure," my gaze stopped on a bastard who worked here, who was about to sneak past the redhead and Marry, "he can tell us where he is." I stared at the man, eyes blazing with anger. Caught, he stood frozen for a moment, then he wanted to start running, but the red-haired man reacted incredibly quickly and grabbed the man by the arm. "Don't be so hasty!" The man fought in vain against the red-haired man, who was a good ten centimeters shorter than him. Being inferior to someone smaller didn't seem to suit the nurse, because even though it was clear that he had lost, he was still pulling and tugging to free himself from the hold.
The only reaction he got from the redhead was an annoyed sigh before twisting his prisoner's arm behind his back. "I just have to push a little and your arm is broken!" he growled, as if to prove it he applied minimal pressure and the orderly gasped in pain.
I was out of the room in two steps. "Where is he!?" I wanted to grab the man by the collar and hold him against the wall until he gave me the answers I needed. Violence wasn't usually the answer to my problems, but this was about Bucky. However, my abused body couldn't even handle five kilos of weight, so I held back. The man's eyes darted between Marry, who could have killed him dozens of times, looks that could kill, and me. But when he opened his mouth he didn't give us any answers, the two words that left his mouth were "Fuck you!"
I let out a surprised breath. I had actually underestimated the man, who was perhaps two years older than me. I thought he would cave in immediately, but I was probably wrong. My hands balled into fists, I wouldn't like to do it, but if necessary I would beat the answer out of him. Even if I couldn't quite agree with my conscience to hit someone to get answers, my heart ached even harder with longing for Bucky. But the redhead was faster than me.
"Watch it, kid!" he almost shouted he let go of the man's arm, spun him around and grabbed him by the shoulders "I was a military doctor in Iraq, do you know what that means?" He glared at the boy in front of him, while Marry looked like she was about to attack the nurse herself and the nurse himself just widened his eyes and shook his head. The redhead's mouth twisted into a grin that would have seemed friendly if his eyes hadn't been flashing with anger. "That means I can name every bone in your body before I break it!" The nurse's larynx swelled as he swallowed hard.
We would never know whether the red-haired man had actually carried out his threat, because suddenly an almost inhuman scream echoed through the corridors of St. Helens, which made Marry turn white and brought tears to my eyes. Even the soldier, who had heard the screams of countless wounded and bomb explosions in his life, loosened his vice-like grip slightly and looked with wide-eyed horror in the direction from which the scream had come. "My goodness, what was that? "
I felt Mum's hand rest comfortingly on my shoulder as I answered the soldier, "It's Bucky."

I nervously walked up and down the same two meters over and over again. My eyes kept darting to the watch that was attached to my wrist; it had been in there for far too long. It had already been forty minutes since Tony disappeared through the door. "This takes too long." I muttered to myself. It was driving me crazy that I couldn't do anything but wait while Tony was in the place where he had been stuck for so long.
"Dude" Pietro was leaning against one of the cars with his feet crossed and his arms crossed. "Tony and Steve have half an army to back them up, what's going to happen?" However, his increased acting revealed that he wasn't as relaxed as he seemed. Nat ran a hand through her short curls. "Do you want the list of everything that can go wrong in alphabetical order?" She grimaced painfully when Clint lightly elbowed her in the side. "Nat, not helpful!" She threw her hands in the air in frustration. "All I'm saying is that it was a stupid idea!" "Clint's right," I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from starting to knead my hands, which would only cause them to bruise again, "not helpful."
Rhodey, who must have almost worn out his shoes at the pace he was pacing, just rolled his eyes. "Have you ever seen Tony talk himself out of something he's got in his head? He'll be fine ......"
"No!" I interrupted him. "Don't tell me nothing will happen to him, I don't even want to think about it." Rhodey raised his hands in surrender. "I'm just saying." he murmured.
Suddenly the door I had been staring at for over an hour started to squeak and open. But what I thought didn't come out behind it. Instead of our friends, young people of almost all ages streamed out the door. The youngest maybe fourteen, the oldest our age. But in all the confusion I was relieved to see Tony's brown head of hair.
While everyone else stared at the flood of distraught teenagers, I pushed my way through them toward Tony.
He grinned when he saw me. "See, I told you, nothing will happen..." I didn't let him finish, wrapped my arms around him, picked him up and turned in a circle with him, which surprised him let out a laugh before I put him down again "I know." I had one arm still wrapped around his waist while my other was on the back of his head, his arms resting on my shoulders "I was still worried." He grinned again before leaning forward and our lips brushed briefly.
When we pulled away I saw the hint of guilt on his face. "Tones, what's wrong?" He sighed "We haven't heard from Sam and Bucky yet. Their mums and a soldier went looking for them." He looked at the young people who were standing around Steve and the others and seemed quite overwhelmed by the sudden freedom. "I couldn't just leave them in their rooms." "Hey," I brushed a strand of hair out of his face, "that was the right thing to do. The two of them will get along, and besides," I saw with satisfaction how the Sargent was just reaching for his cell phone, "the place is going to be closed down." Still with my arm around my friend, I strolled with him to the car at Rhodey 's Father stood and held his cell phone to his ear.
"Hello NYPD, this is Sergeant Rhodes. Send a task force to St Helens I have multiple cases of kidnapping, child abuse and human rights violations here!" there was silence for a moment then he barked into the loudspeaker "I don't give a shit that it's a reputable hospital, I have around two dozen disturbed children here! If you have even a bit of courage, then turn on your blue lights and come here!" the man paced back and forth angrily as he listened to the answer. "Please go, hurry up, otherwise the rats will leave the sinking area Ship!" with these words he hung up and put the cell phone in his pocket.
When I glanced over at Tony, I could see nothing but pure relief on his face. I smiled happily and pressed a kiss to his hairline. "Hey guys" Wanda came running towards us "we made a list of what the people are called and whether they have someone to stay with." I wouldn't have dreamed of that, but it was a fantastic idea after all everyone had to People have someone who truly cares about them. The first of them were already holding the cell phones borrowed from the soldiers or our friends and talking, some in tears, with whoever they were calling, friends or family.
Without hesitation, I pulled out my cell phone and handed it to Wanda. "We should probably go to the large parking lot, it's not so cramped there." I thought out loud. Wanda nodded in agreement. "You're right." grabbed my phone and jogged back to the gathering of people, talking to Rhodey who was standing right next to his father.
Next to me, Tony sighed, "Tony, what's wrong?" "There's still no trace of Sam and Bucky." he ran his hand over his face "we shouldn't have broken up." His gaze was on the door, which was now finally closed, as if the two of them would jump out of the hallway at any moment. "Let's go forward," I pointed with my head at the procession of people that was steadily moving towards the secret path that led to the official entrance to the hospital, "these two will definitely show up."
It wasn't that I wasn't worried about the two of them, but with the chaos that certainly reigned in the secret department by now, no one was paying attention to who was entering or leaving. Tony nodded "You're probably right." Then he tore his eyes away from the door and we followed Sahra and Nat, who had made a friendly call on Sam's sister and assured her that her brother would definitely be there soon, through the thicket. A little further ahead, Marry's boyfriend was arguing with Rhodey's dad about his girlfriend's stubbornness, his forehead furrowed with worry lines. A light breeze blew through my hair and in the distance I heard something that made me grin, I heard sirens wailing.
