The Doctor

Steve's view
I watched the two of them for a few more seconds, then turned and walked straight towards my destination. I could no longer watch this woman keep putting her hand on Bucky's arm, laughing at every other word he said, although it wasn't even a real laugh, it was more like a shriek. The only thing that kept me from being consumed by jealousy was the disgust Bucky clearly felt towards this woman.
I filled out the paperwork, this time I was from Ohio. I sat down on the turquoise, soft couch and let the middle-aged doctor examine me. When he was done he asked me to remain seated.
"Is there a problem?" I asked.
"Just stay seated." he repeated his request, looking at me sternly through his round glasses. The man yanked back the fabric curtain and was gone two seconds later.
The longer the man in the doctor's coat didn't come back, the more nervous I became. My gaze kept darting nervously to the sign posted on the opposite wall.
"It is forbidden to report more than once!"
I knew myself that what I had been doing for several weeks was against the law. I'd had many an argument with Bucky about it. But just knowing something was illegal and actually getting caught were two different things. I toyed with the idea of just leaving, but that would have been cowardly. I had broken the law and now I would also have to answer for it if I couldn't somehow talk my way out of it. I kneaded my fingers nervously, rocked my feet up and down and counted in my head the states I had wrongly entered on my forms.
A loud rattle made me wince. The curtain had been pushed aside again and now a slightly older gentleman was standing there. He wore a perfectly fitting suit under which his beer belly bulged. Round glasses sat on his nose and he held a file in his hand, a really thick file.
"Steve Rogers from Alabama?" he looked at me questioningly.
I just opened my mouth to answer, but he paid no attention to me and continued.
"Or from Massachusetts?"
Now I was really starting to panic slightly. "I think you're wrong, there must have been some misunderstanding." I tried to save myself somehow.
"Boy I don't care about any of that, I don't care that you broke the law. I care about your five attempts. Why do you want to join the army so badly?"
He looked at me out of curious eyes. I was lost for words for a moment, though the man across from me was still looking at me, awaiting his answer.
"So bent on killing Nazis?" he grinned.
This question brought me back to reality "No sir, I don't want to kill anyone. But I want to serve my country and protect the people I love and if that means killing people, then I will do that too, even though it gives me no pleasure." I looked at the grey-haired man seriously. I didn't want to kill anyone, I didn't even know if I could, but if all the other men out there could, I had to be able to do it.
Apparently the man liked my answer because he held out his hand to me with a smile "My name is Dr Abraham Erskine. We're already getting you into the army."
I grabbed his hand and shook it, perhaps a little too effusively, but the man was taking me into the army. I followed him out into the corridor to a large desk.
"So where is this little man really from?" he asked me, without the slightest mockery, rather kindly.
"From Brooklyn." I answered him and watched with great glee as an 1A was pressed on my papers. I couldn't wait to tell Bucky about it. But when I glanced at my wristwatch, the corners of my mouth dropped in disappointment; it was already four in the morning. Bucky was long since on his way to his ship in England, if he wasn't already on the open sea. I would write to him as soon as possible.
"Be at the training camp in Brooklyn at nine o'clock today. All further instructions will follow there." with these words the doctor handed me my permission slip.
"Thank you for the opportunity sir, you won't regret it!" I thanked him and left the building overjoyed. I only had a few hours left before I had to report to the training camp. I decided to go to the beach, because although I probably should, I would certainly not find sleep that night.
I strolled along the soft beach and watched the waves that kept breaking and lashing the beach. The cool night wind ran through my hair and tousled it. With a smile, I stared out to sea. Somewhere out there was Bucky. "I wonder what he's doing right now." I hoped so much that I would be transferred to England too. After watching a Breathtaking sunrise, I left the beach and headed home. I still had to shower and pack my stuff.

Bucky's view
I never thought I would say this, but I was counting down the seconds until I had to leave for my ship to England. I just hadn't managed to shake off Marry Luise. First we had been dancing, this woman didn't have the slightest sense of tact and if I had worn less sturdy shoes my feet would be green and blue now. After that she had dragged me along to friends of hers and made it seem as if we were as good as a couple. I did drop the remark once in between that my "girlfriend" wasn't feeling well and that was why she hadn't come along, but she skilfully ignored that. In the meantime, I had been torturing myself with annoying banter for hours. I wasn't really listening, it was all about this and that, my mind was completely on Steve.
"What do you think of the way the war is going?" a man called Jack threw a grenade into the room.
"I think it's dragging on, they could do with a bit of speed over there." said a guy with slicked back black hair.
I clenched my hands into fists. I would bet anything that neither of them had ever been to war. Neither of them knew what it was like to sit in a trench where every moment could be your last, they didn't know what it was like to have to stand up to the advanced weapons technology of the Nazis.
"I'll tell them!" I interjected snottily.
"James is going to England, to the front you know," Marry Luise interjected.
"Oh England, I've never been there, but I hear it's a very nice country." laughed Jack.
I really had to summon all my self-control not to kick the two men's asses. "Yes apart from the shelling, your comrades dying and the fact that every breath you take could be your last, England is certainly AMAZING." I replied snappishly. I looked at my watch and was relieved to see that my ship had already docked "Well it was nice to meet you Marry Luise we'll see you gentlemen maybe we'll see you around."
"I rather think not," Jack muttered.
I ignored him and made the quickest way home where I grabbed my sea bag and headed off in the direction of the docks.
I would have so loved to see Steve before I left for England and yet now I was walking across the bridge to my bunk and had spent the evening with the person I despised most in the world. I threw my sea bag on my bunk in frustration and stormed out onto the deck. I leaned on the railing and stared out at the water. Even as the ship's bell rang, even as more and more soldiers crowded the deck, I just stopped and looked out to sea. It was somehow calming and it reminded me of Steve's eyes. I didn't know then that I would see those eyes again much sooner than I had expected.
