Hydra dress warmly

Steve's view
Weeks had passed since I had pulled off my action in Austria. My team and I had been busy. One base after the other we had razed to the ground. We had done exactly the same with the weapons depots. It turned out that Jaques was a master when it came to explosives. Sometimes he would just roll under a truck loaded with weapons, give it a charge of explosives and two hundred metres away the truck would blow up. At the moment we were standing in the mountains of Switzerland, a hundred metres above a railway line and Jim was listening to a radio message from the Hydra. A rope was already stretched to the opposite mountain.
Bucky was not looking too happy down the steep slope we were about to race down "Remember when I made Mal ride the roller coaster?"
I nodded "Yeah and I threw up on it."
"This isn't payback for that is it?" Bucky clutched his machine gun tightly.
"No why would I do that?" I asked sarcastically.
"You were right Zola is on the train." reported Jim "Hydra Headquarters has given permission to go full speed."
"Wherever he's going, they must need him bad," Gabe muttered.
I hooked my grip on the rope "Ok we have a ten second window, if we don't meet that we'll be stuck in the middle of the windscreen."
Behind me Bucky and Jack, who had become increasingly friendly over the last few weeks, got ready to hack in their holds.
"Well, hiss away you mosquitoes!" quipped Tim.
"Maintenant!" shouted Jaques. I pushed myself off the rock. Behind me, I faintly heard two more "Allons!".
Feeling the cold wind in my face, I waited until I was directly above the train and released my grip. I landed smoothly on the moving train. Behind me I heard two plops, Bucky and Jack had landed. Bucky and I climbed onto the train. Bucky had his machine gun at the ready and I held my shield in front of me. Next to us was a shelf stacked with weapons. I went through the door leading to the next compartment when suddenly I heard a click and the door closed. I turned around in shock to see Bucky still stuck on the other side of the door and at that moment being visited by a Hydra soldier who was firing his gun at him. I feverishly thought about how I could open the door and help him. But suddenly I saw some kind of robot shooting at me with the typical blue energy beams. I held my shield in front of me and the beam bounced off, but it was so strong that it pressed me against the door. I hurled the shield at the robot and split it in half. Then I turned back to the door, behind which Bucky was cowering behind a shelf and had no more ammunition. I broke down the door with my shield and threw my pistol at him. Then I distracted the Hydra soldier by knocking over a shelf and Bucky shot him.
"I had him right where I wanted him!" said Bucky, out of breath.
I grinned, that used to be my line whenever I got into another fight and he had to save me. "Yeah I know you did."
I heard the click first, then I saw the robot aiming at us "Get down!" I yelled and shoved Bucky to the side. The impact knocked the shield out of my hand, dropping me five metres back against a wall and blowing a hole in the wall of the train.
Numbly, I only heard Dr Zola's voice through a loudspeaker: "Fire again. Kill him! Now!"
I tried to pull myself together and what I saw stung my heart. Bucky had grabbed my shield and was firing a pistol at the robot. What happened next played out in slow motion before my eyes. The robot fired, Bucky jerked the shield up and the recoil catapulted him through the hole in the outer wall.
"Bucky!" I cried out in agony. I picked myself up again, grabbed my shield and cut the robot in half. Then I rushed to the hole in the train while pulling down my mask to see better. Bucky was clinging to a pole that was the only thing keeping him from falling into a deep abyss.
"Bucky hold on!" I yelled, trying to get to him somehow without damaging the metal further. He shimmied along the bar, but then suddenly there was a creaking sound and I realised that I only had seconds left before the bar would break and Bucky would fall to his death. Panic sparkled in his blue eyes. The creaking got stronger and when the bar broke I jumped. I didn't care if I fell because if Bucky was gone I wouldn't want to live. I grabbed Bucky's hand and reached for a ledge on the train. I missed it by millimetres and Bucky and I fell down together. The last thing I heard before I passed out was Bucky's cry of pain.

Jack's view
I was working my way up the train roof to the locomotive car when I heard his scream. I whirled my head around and saw Bucky clinging with all his strength to a rickety pole, a hundred-foot drop below him. Steve came up and held out his hand to him. But Bucky was too far away and you could clearly see how unstable the pole was on which Bucky's life was hanging. As the bar broke Steve jumped and grabbed Bucky's hand, I was about to exhale in relief but then Steve missed the protrusion on the train and they both fell to their certain death. All I could hear was Bucky's cry of pain. I saw red. I ran to the front of the train and jumped through the glass hatch into the cockpit. I pointed my gun at Dr Zola and glared at him in anger. The doctor threw up his hands. "You're lucky I have the mission to bring you back alive!" I snarled at him. Bucky and Steve had both been like brothers to me and now they were both dead. Dead because of this man at whom I had kept my gun pointed the entire train ride. As we pulled into Genf station, I held the gun to the man's head and let him get off the train in front of me. The others were already waiting for us, I could hardly look them in the eye. I had been the only one who could have saved Bucky and Steve.
Tim came up to me grinning until he saw my face "Jack, where's Cap and Bucky?"
"Ask him that!" I pointed my head at the Doctor and glared at him in anger.
Tim's smile froze.
All the others looked shocked. With Cap we had lost our leader and our glue that held us together and with Bucky a good comrade.
"They fell into a ravine fighting one of his fucking robots," I shouted the last part, making the man I was holding my gun to flinch.
No one asked if we shouldn't look for them, they all knew that no one could survive a fall into that ravine, superhuman or not.
"Let's return to quarters, we have two dead soldiers to report." Gabe muttered sadly.
No one contradicted him. We got in the car and drove to the improvised base camp we had set up in Switzerland for the week. We led Dr Zola handcuffed into the building and handed him over to Cornel Phillips. He let his gaze roam searchingly over our group it seemed he noticed immediately that two of our team were missing.
"Cornel, things have gone very wrong." I exclaimed.
"Rogers and Barnes?"
I nodded. Cornel dropped into an armchair. "How am I going to explain to them in DC that the only super soldier we have is dead?" he muttered.
But although it didn't seem like it at first, the death of Steve Rogers hit him much harder than the death of Capitan America.
The Cornel looked at us all "Gentleman dismissed." he looked at Zola with eyes sparkling with contempt "I must interrogate our prisoner."
Without a word we left the room. "I need a drink." Jim informed us.
"I'll join you," Tim joined him. So did Gabe and Jaques.
The four of them looked at me promptly. "You guys go ahead, I'll join you in a minute." Tim nodded at me and the four of them headed in the direction of a baar.
I just walked aimlessly around the building, up and down stairs, until I finally arrived at Steve's old room. Cautiously I opened the door, faintly hoping he would grin at me from behind the desk and ask why I was making such a face. But of course he didn't. He was dead, and so was Bucky, they were both lying dead at the bottom of that ravine.
"Excuse me." a voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I wheeled around and hastily wiped a tear from my cheek "What's wrong!" I snapped at the person behind me.
The young soldier flinched and immediately I felt bad "What's wrong?" I asked a second time, only a little friendlier.
" Um Sir Capitan Rogers has reappeared, he's in the infirmary." the boy stammered.
Immediately I became furious "If this is to be some kind of joke it is in really bad taste!" I clenched my hands into fists.
"It's no joke sir I swear it, if you don't find him in the infirmary you can hand me over to the Hydra." the young soldier assured me.
I stormed past him and was already almost running in the direction of the infirmary. All the way there I wondered how Steve could have survived the fall. I pulled open the door to the only single room in the whole ward. And there I saw him, Steve, sitting on the bed, crying his eyes out. When I saw Steve, who was usually so brave and calm, so broken up, only one question popped into my head "What the hell happened?
