Freedom is near...
pov. Steve
I nervously tapped my right index finger on my coffee cup, which was white like almost everything here, and looked at my watch on my left wrist. It was just before eight in the evening. I let out a tense breath as one of my colleagues walked past the cafeteria door. I had to get the door open at eight sharp and I couldn't do that with these psychopaths in uniforms breathing down my neck. The steam from the still warm drink in my hands rose to my face before I took a tiny sip to avoid scalding myself. The closer eight o'clock got, the harder it was for me to behave normally.
Because I didn't have the slightest idea how Tony was doing, I hadn't seen him since that one time five days ago. My gut feeling was that he wasn't exactly in great shape, I was just hoping for once that my intuition would be wrong. The cup clinked slightly as I placed it a little too firmly on the wooden table. I looked at my watch one last time. It was five to eight. Breathing deeply in and out, I ran my hands through my hair and pushed the chair back with a squeak. It was time. If everything went smoothly, I would be able to get the others in and out with Tony. Before anyone would notice, they would be gone and I would be standing there with a confused look on my face and no idea what was going on. "And then I can finally quit," I thought bitterly as I walked down the long corridor, which was somewhat underlit at night.
The three weeks here had taken a much greater psychological toll on me than I was willing to admit to the others. Because seeing someone being wronged and not being able to do anything about it was the worst thing I could ever imagine. With my head bowed, I walked past a nurse whom I had only known by sight; he was even more unpleasant to me than any of the others. I didn't know why, but his charisma sent shivers down my spine despite the fact that I was a head and a half taller and probably twenty kilos heavier than him. Still, something about him was scary.
I approached the exit that led to the lonely parking lot behind the official hospital. As I unhooked my key card from my belt, I took another look over my shoulder. I breathed a sigh of relief to see no one. I quickly swiped the card over the sensor and prayed to everything I believed that Clint and Wanda had managed to disable the cameras.
pov. Stephen
I stood behind Wanda in the back compartment of the van, which had no seats and was pretty free to move around. The Russian woman and Clint had opened two laptops next to each other, letting their eyes wander over the numbers and letters and although they spoke English to each other, it was as if they were speaking a foreign language.
Pietro sat leaning against the wall across from Wanda and looked at his sister encouragingly. Nat was already sitting outside the back door, ready to get started. She was wearing black jeans and a long-sleeved top and a black hood covered her red curls. Bucky was sitting in the front driver's seat, it was Clint's car, but he had already been busy yelling at the laptop in front of him in frustration on the way there. Sam sat next to his boyfriend and held his hand reassuringly, because even though Bucky refused to stay here in the car, everyone could see the fear in his eyes.
"Now come on you stupid shit!" On the verge of turning his laptop into a pile of junk, Clint ran his hands through his hair in frustration and then started pounding on the keys again.Wanda was a lot more controlled, but her frustration was also clear to see. "I don't lose against a firewall." she looked over at Clint "do a fake hack and maybe I'll get through." Even as she spoke, Clint began to implement her idea.
I ran my hands through my hair desperately. "Tell me you can do it!" I couldn't stand being so close to being able to hold Tony in my arms again and then failing."We will sort it out." Clint's distant tone didn't exactly reassure me.Almost as if by themselves, my feet ran to the door of the van and stopped next to Nat, where I let myself slide down the cold metal wall."Hey," I looked at Nat as I heard her strained voice trying to sound encouraging, "even though Clint is an idiot sometimes, he's a smart idiot."I managed a slight grin. "You think so?""And if not," Pietro held on to a pole above him, "Wanda is still there, the two of them together......."He didn't get to finish his sentence. "Yes, take that!" Clint shouted, clenching his fist in joy.
Wanda just grinned from ear to ear, the tense attitude she had had since getting into the van seemed to fall away from her. "The cameras are disabled for you, but it gets better," she grinned diabolically, "Clint and I can access them "That means they can't see you coming, but we can guide you through it." The Russian woman proudly pointed to the two screens in front of her and indeed, many video recordings, separated by frames, lined up on the screens. Hallways, a cafeteria in which five men and four women sat, a room in which there was a lounger on which some leather shackles were attached and so much more that I couldn't even pronounce.
The first smile in weeks since Tony was taken away from me appeared on my face, because in one of those videos I could see Steve standing in front of a door, looking around to make sure he wasn't being followed.I nodded to Nat, who opened the door as quietly as she could. I quickly followed her out of the cramped van and breathed in the refreshing night air for just a millisecond.Behind me, Wanda held her brother's arm again, her hand didn't quite reach around his upper arm muscle. "Promise me that you'll take care of yourself." she bashes him.
He just grinned, some anger flashed in his eyes "I promise, nothing will happen to me" he jumped elegantly out of the back of the van "but I can't say that about the assholes in there." he murmured.Sam and Bucky also jumped out of the car, the two of them quietly closed the doors and we all walked towards the door. I glanced briefly at my watch; it was a minute to eight. I stood impatiently at the front and unconsciously tapped my fingers against the door frame. Suddenly there was a quiet beep and the door opened.
Steve's head poked through the tiny crack in the door that had been created. "Did they do it?" was the first thing he said.I just nodded, knowing exactly what he was talking about."Okay, let's go." Steve stepped aside and let us in.I didn't need to be told twice and followed Steve as quietly and unobtrusively as I could. Nat was right behind me, behind her were Sam and Bucky, and behind them was Pietro, who had an angry expression on his face. We walked in silence down a long hallway, past doors that were all metal and had no number or label. The little light down here made me feel like I was in a grave, everything inside me screamed to go faster, to just run and run to Tony. But that would be careless, so I put my heart aside and listened to my mind.
"Hey!" Suddenly a voice sounded that didn't belong to any of us.I spun around, a security guard wearing the exact same uniform as Steve was standing at the end of the hallway, staring at us in shock. But aside from the shock, he looked angry, pretty angry. For a second I was frozen. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Bucky become even paler than he already was. It was only when the man pulled out a baton and came towards us that I broke out of my stupor.
The first person the nurse took notice of was Bucky. "I know you." He looked thoughtfully at Bucky, who stood there frozen and seemed unable to move, "Barnes right."Bucky exhaled heavily, only when the man with the baton came to life in the brown-haired man and he jumped to the side. But he was too slow, and even though he avoided the worst, the baton still hit his leg. Groaning, he fell to his knees."Buck!" Sam knelt down next to him worriedly while Bucky held his leg, his eyes narrowed in pain.
"Bastard!" Pietro jumped in front of the two as the orderly swung again and this time aimed at Sam's head. He caught the baton with his bare hand, enjoyed the surprised expression on the nurse's face for a moment, and then delivered an uppercut so powerful that it knocked him off his feet and left him unconscious."Jesus, do you know how long I've wanted to do this?" Steve stood contentedly, arms folded, looking at the unconscious man with a kind of satisfaction that was so uncharacteristic of the otherwise empathetic Steve that I wondered what monster we had just encountered.
A groan from Bucky drew my attention back to him, I quickly ran over to him "Hey man, are you okay?" I looked worriedly at the spot on his leg where the baton had hit him. It was just below the knee, he was lucky it wasn't right on the knee, had it been like that he might never be able to play football again. He groaned a little as he put weight on his foot. "It'll be okay." he took a step and would have fallen if Sam hadn't caught him. The dark-skinned man quickly put one of Bucky's arms around his shoulders. "We have to move on." Bucky looked up determinedly.I nodded, but at the same time I cursed Bucky's way of always having to play the strong one in front of everyone. Steve waved us further in the direction where the sleeping quarters were probably located. "I'm coming to you Tones." I thought as I started moving and ran after the others.
pov. Tony
I lay curled up on my bed. I had my eyes open and yet I wasn't awake. From the bed opposite I could hear steady, calm breathing, which told me that Leila was sleeping. It was sometimes difficult for me to distinguish reality from the hallucination they kept making me relive. They varied from time to time and yet they were the same every time. Every time everyone I loved died or ended up in the same place as me and every time it was my fault. I no longer had any hope that it was the real Stephen when I saw him.
It had been like that the first few times, but it was easier to admit that it wasn't real than to have to believe Stephen was dead every time. Because I knew for sure that the real Stephen was out there somewhere, looking for me . Or so I hoped. A tear rolled down my cheek like it did every time I thought of Stephen. I didn't even turn around when I heard the squeak of the door. "What now?" my voice sounded monotone, I really didn't care what they were doing by now "another hallucination?"
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder, it felt so familiar, tears came to my eyes as I turned around."Tones." I looked into Stephen's blue eyes. He was sitting in front of my bed, smiling that smile that I loved so much about him and had tears in his eyes."No" the tears in my eyes dripped down my cheeks as I realized that I was already in the next hallucination "you're not real!" I slapped his hand away, jumped up and backed away from him until I reached the wall.
"Tones, it's me." Desperation flashed in Stephen's eyes as he approached me "I don't know what they did to you..." his voice broke a little "but I swear to you I'm real" he put his hand on my cheek "I'm here. "I flutteringly closed my eyes, just enjoying the moment, even though none of it was real, but then I slid down the wall and put my hands over my ears. "Just go." I muttered.I felt him take his hands away from my ears "Tones, what's wrong!" he half screamed in desperation.I looked him straight into his beautiful deep blue eyes "I can't watch you die again!" I roared, then simply dropped my head to my knees and let the tears that had been building up stream out.
pov. Stephen
I was breathless "Tones" I tried to somehow look at him but he kept his head down "What do you mean you can't watch me die again?" my lip was trembling, how could I convince him that I was real?"You're dying," he looked up with disheveled hair, tears streaming down his cheeks, "you're all dying." he looked behind me, at Nat, Bucky, Sam and Pietro "over and over and over again. And the worst part is," he laughed bitterly, "it's not even real."
A tear rolled down my cheek "Oh Tones." was the only thing I was able to say.But suddenly he seemed to spot something behind me and his eyes darkened. "What are you doing in my hallucination?" he snapped at Steve.I turned my head a little so that, although I was still crouched in front of Tony, I could still look at Steve, who was currently looking down at the ground. "Tony, I swear on everything, this isn't a hallucination and I don't really work here," he continued ruffling his hair in embarrassment. "That was just so I could help get you out of here."
I looked back at Tony, who was squeezing his eyes shut and pressing his hands to his temples. "It has to be real, please let it be real." then he opened his eyes again and surprise filled his eyes as he looked at me. He carefully reached out and touched my cheek. "Stephen," he breathed with relief, "you're here."I put my hand on his "Do you really think I wouldn't come get you." I leaned forward and kissed him. I let all my feelings flow into the kiss, the desperation I had felt in the last few weeks, the fear for Tony and the panic of losing him. As we pulled away from each other, I pulled him into a hug and held him close, noticing with anger how thin he had become under the oversized clothes.
"Do you want a moment to yourself?" I heard Pietro's shouting behind me, ruining the moment.Tony pulled away from me, grinned and jumped up "Pietro!" In four long steps he was at the Russian and embraced him stormily.Pietro laughed a little at Tony's exuberance. "Nice to see you too." He patted Tony on the shoulder, making him wince a little.Nat received the same effusive greeting: "If you let yourself be kidnapped again, I'll kill you myself!" she threatened Tony, laughing.I stood in exactly the same place as before and just looked at Tony, smiling.
Until Tony's gaze returned to Steve after he greeted Sam and Bucky and scolded Bucky for having an injured leg. I was about to go over to tell Tony again that Steve was a friend, but Tony, like the rest of us, was distracted by murmuring from across the room. "Leila," he just mumbled and ran into the darker part of the room room. With two big steps I was next to him.He leaned over a younger girl "Come on Leila wake up, it's just a dream!" He shook her a little and the red-haired girl sat up, breathing heavily.
For a moment she just looked around confused, but then her eyes fell on Steve and she started sobbing hysterically and crawled into the farthest corner of her bed."Leila, Leila, everything is fine," Tony tried to reassure her, "he's a friend." He took her lightly by the arms, but she just didn't seem to want to calm down."Steve," I looked at him, her screaming would attract the nurses to us, "you'd better wait outside."The blonde nodded, keeping his head bowed in embarrassment as he left the room.
This place had to be a lot more terrible than I imagined if this girl was having a panic attack just at the sight of an orderly."Leila, it's okay" the redhead slowly calmed down under Tony's murmurs, she let her head fall against his chest, her shoulders shook a little because she was still crying.Tony gently stroked her head, not a spark of jealousy crept up in me, their chemistry was more like that of a sibling, even a blind person could see that. He still had an arm around Leila's back when Tony looked at me. "We have to take her with us."Just one look at the girl who was completely exhausted was enough "Okay, Nat you take her" I looked at Sam who looked worriedly at the redhead and was still supporting Bucky who was still having trouble walking on his own "we have to get out of here before..." a ringing sound jolted me out of my thoughts.
I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and answered, "Make sure you get out of there!" Clint's panicked voice came through the receiver "they're coming!"Before I could even answer, the door was thrown open and Steve burst in. "Guys, we have to go," he looked at us urgently, "now!"For a moment I was frozen, it was so quiet you could drop a pin, except for a sound. The sound of shoes running across rivers. The sound of fifteen nurses running towards us.
