Aftermath and a waste disposal
Pietro's view
It was deep in the night. We were already back in the Avengers Tower. I was lying in Wanda's bed watching her sleep, she had snuggled up to me and had been asleep for hours. But even though it was deep in the night I couldn't sleep. I felt slightly guilty that I wasn't with Clint, but the urge to be with Wanda, to see if she was okay, was minimally greater. For I knew Clint was safely in the infirmary, his foot broken. I shuddered at the thought of him flying through the air and almost dying. Wanda shifted her weight and curled up. Sweat formed on her forehead, she started mumbling things. But there was one thing I could clearly hear "Whitehall, no." she kept muttering.
I shook her gently to wake her from her nightmare. Suddenly red streaks formed around her hands and the room began to shake. She curled up, tightened her legs and began to scream, a shock wave caught me and threw me across the room. Groaning, I picked myself up again, relieved to see that Wanda had woken up and was now crouched on the bed. I ran to her and just took her in my arms. Gently rocking her back and forth I kept murmuring "It's alright, you're out of there." until the room stopped shaking and her hands went out.
She looked up and apparently spotted the blood running down my face "Was it me?" she looked at me horrified.
Hastily I wiped my cheek to make the blood disappear "It's alright, try to sleep some more." I gave her a kiss on the forehead and stroked her head again.
"I'm sorry." she mumbled again, though it was unnecessary, then she curled up again and went back to sleep.
As soon as I was sure she was really asleep, I ran with super speed into our living room. It was almost empty. Natasha and Thor were sitting with Loki in the infirmary, which he couldn't escape this time despite his supernatural healing powers, even though he hated it so much. So was Clint, who was still recovering from his injuries. Steve was with Bucky, the only one sitting in front of the flat screen was Rodney. I flopped down on the couch next to him and stared at the life transmission from Brian. Stark was sitting opposite him, his arm was in a sling and he had a few scratches on his face. Sam stood in the corner with his arms crossed so he could intervene in an emergency. "Got anything out of him yet." even though Brian had his back turned to me, it still sent shivers down my spine. Pictures flashed in my mind's eye of Brain coming at me with a splash and me not being able to fight him off. I pushed the flashes out of my mind as quickly as they had come up.
Rodney shook his head "Not really yet, just what we already know." then his head lingered on my forehead "What happened there?"
Unconsciously I ran my fingers over the spot "Wanda had a nightmare." I bit my bottom lip and looked back at the screen.
Tony's view
I was sitting opposite my former senior doctor with my hands clenched into fists. Brian was chained to the table with a pair of handcuffs and yet I was somewhat relieved that Sam was standing behind me because I couldn't gauge Brain's next move. " You can't stay silent forever." I glared down at him "Hydra." I raised my eyebrows "Seriously now Brain, how do you come up with such a stupid idea."
I ran my fingers over my eyes, really I just wanted to go to bed. I wanted to see Pepper, who had been pregnant for a few weeks. But first I had to fix this. Brian was my fault, I had let him go, hoping he would get better. But after seeing Loki, what Brian had done to him and justifying it with science, I couldn't let him run free anymore. I had already notified Ross, the only thing I still wanted to know was why.
Then finally Brain raised his head, "Discoveries require experiments." a predatory grin spread across his face.
My blood froze in my veins, I knew a person who had always said exactly that, but that person had been dead for ages. A person my father had once told me about in his stories of war. A highly decorated Hydra officer, Daniel Whitehall.
"You've found yourself a new mentor, I see," I snorted.
Brian just shrugged "He understands that sometimes sacrifices have to be made to make the step into the future."
"But experimenting on people who don't want it, that's wrong and cruel." I didn't understand how someone could do such a thing and then still be able to look in the mirror.
His answer didn't exactly improve his situation "But he's not even human."
I took a deep breath to control myself.
"You're right, he's not." surprised, I looked at Sam whose forehead had wrinkled in anger "If Loki were human, your experiments would have killed him."
I ran my fingers through my hair, I wasn't going to get anything more out of Brian. A message on my watch from Jarvis informed me that Ross had arrived with a team. "Well you'll have plenty of time to think now." I grinned at Brian "Being part of Hydra and human experimentation both carry life sentences, how long is that again, help me out Sam?"
"Either way you'll spend the rest of your life behind bars." Sam couldn't help but grin slightly either, which was really quite an achievement with him this late at night. I stood up and walked out of the room, Sam following close behind. "I'm going to hit the hay." with that sentence Sam trailed off as soldiers were already visible at the end of the corridor.
I beckoned them to come over, "Nice to see you again sir." any idiot could hear that it wasn't meant seriously.
"Stark, what have you got yourself into now?"
I just rolled my eyes, he knew exactly what it was about, that's why he was here. The men chained Brain's hands and feet together and led him out. "Do me one more favour, lock him in the darkest cell you have." I looked Brain provocatively in the eye once more before he was led away by the men.
"Well then Stark, I look forward to our next meeting." the US Secretary of State said goodbye to me, we both knew it was a lie. I returned the greeting only half-heartedly, because my mind was already on my bed.
Only ten minutes later, after I had made sure that all the soldiers were gone, at the moment everyone here was still overly tense and would shoot at soldiers first and then ask questions, I crept up to my and Pepper's floor. As quietly as I could, I slipped off my shoes and jeans and crawled into bed with Pepper. Grumbling, she turned over and used me as a pillow. Smiling, I looked at her baby bump, already clearly visible under her shirt. Soon I would be a father. I was terrified, terrified that I would become like my father, but I would do my best not to. I gently stroked Pepper's belly, "I'll love you more than anything, little Morgan," I murmured.
