It all happened so incredibly fast. One moment Clint was running towards us, the next bullets were flying through the air. The brunette was knocked aside by a silver streak and the bullets missed the archer by a hair's breadth. But when his lifesaver stood up again, he swayed back and forth disconcertingly.
"What's going on?" muttered Bucky, looking at Pietro with narrowed eyes.
I raised my shoulders helplessly.
"You didn't see that coming." with those words Pietro collapsed and landed upside down on the floor.
"Pietro!" I heard Wanda yell behind me for her brother.
Bucky immediately ran and knelt down next to the boy. Concerned, I kept a lookout for this plane, but when I found it, it was disassembled into its component parts by strands of red light, and with it the robot that was sitting in it.
Bucky came running with Pietro in his arms and laid him down on the floor of the ferry "It just won't stop bleeding." he squeezed the abdominal wound with his hands, but blood just kept pouring out between his fingers.
I ran my hands through my hair frantically "His metabolism is faster, his blood is flowing through his body faster."
Wanda came running and fell to her knees beside her twin, desperately stroking his hair "Pietro, please you can do this. You're all I have left." Tears ran down the girl's cheeks.
It hurt my heart, but the boy would die, by the time we could get him to a hospital he would have bled to death.
"Let me through, sorry I have to go through here, may I pass by for a moment...." I suddenly heard Loki's voice and not two seconds later I saw the god pushing his way through the crowds. He knelt down next to Bucky "I can freeze it, it'll stop the bleeding, but he'll need a doctor as soon as possible." he looked at Wanda questioningly.
She nodded "Do it." she choked out through her tears.
Bucky let go of Pietro's stomach and immediately blood poured out. Loki put his hands on the wound and cooled it until the bleeding stopped. Pietro's reaction was no more than a shrug. I breathed a sigh of relief, "That was a close one Buck....." I looked around for him. When I found him, my heart stopped for a second. I had been so focused on Pietro that I hadn't noticed how close Bucky was standing at the transition from the loading dock to the city. "Buck get away from there......" I yelled and started running towards him.
There was a screeching sound and then Sokovia crashed. The ramp wasn't stable enough and broke away "BUCKY! " I ran to the ledge he was clinging to and grabbed his hand. "I've got you." I assured him. I pulled him back up with all my strength, it was so much that he landed on top of me and knocked me over. Relieved, I wrapped my arms around him "It's alright, it's alright, it's alright. " I mumbled a few times, I wasn't even sure if I was doing it for him or for me. Bucky's eyes were fixed and it didn't seem like he was in the present. I just leaned us together against one of the rows of seats and ran my hand through his long hair. Eventually the tension fell from his body and I could feel his head in the crook of my neck. We just stayed sitting like that. Through the glass wall I could see the city flying into the air. Debris rained down, tearing craters in the earth's surface, but nothing more. Just exhausted, I closed my eyes, it had been a long day. I could only remember the next few hours in a blur. The only thing that stood out sharply was when we took Pietro to the infirmary and the doctors told us that he would pull through, but that it might take some time before he woke up again. Wanda stayed with her brother, as did Clint, who felt terrible about Pietro getting himself shot.
In the evening I lay in bed with Bucky, he was almost asleep. In my mind's eye I kept replaying the scene from the ferry as he dangled over the cliff, paralysed with fear "I love you Buck." I pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
"I love you too." he murmured, half asleep.
I hugged him to me a little and fell asleep peacefully shortly after him. For what more did I want, the man I loved lay unharmed beside me, no one chasing us and no one threatening global annihilation. What I didn't know then was that our peaceful life would not last for long.
