Ch. 38

"Nothing?"

"Nothing yet."

Yet.

Jennie sighed, crossing her arms and falling back to lean against the wall. "What if they're hurting him?" She asked impatiently. "What if-"

"Jennie, I'm trying." Arcee turned her helm a little to look at her, exasperation hinted in her voice.

The girl stared at her for a moment, before she let her gaze fall to the floor. "I know, Arcee, I'm sorry... I'm just..."

"We are all afraid for him." Both of them looked up as Optimus entered the room, striding steadily over. "But we will find him. Have trust in your comrades that they will succeed." He said gently to Jennie.

Arcee stepped aside so her leader could approach the monitor. "Optimus, I feel like I'm onto something. As of late, they made an appearance in Carson City, and before that, about a hundred miles from..."

Jennie tuned out the rest. She had heard this many times... Just as one of them thought they had something, everyone's hopes skyrocketed, only to be slammed back down. At this point, it was unlikely that something had actually been found.

She hadn't lost hope.

She just... Didn't want to get her hopes up.

Not yet, at least.

Optimus and Arcee had delved into a conversation by the time she started listening again, discussing places and past appearances. Finding no comfort in their quiet discussion, Jennie silently slipped off, unnoticed by the two 'bots. After a few moments of blind wandering, she found herself making her way to the roof.

She didn't go up there often; Ratchet seldom did, why would she go without him? But now, it seemed like a good idea. She recalled one time when she was up on the roof alone, but Ratchet had joined her upon noticing her absence. That had been so long ago...

And now, here she stood, breathing in the warm air, and gazing out across a desert. Her hair moved gently in the breeze, which got pretty annoying pretty fast, getting thrown in her face constantly. She hadn't thought of that problem. Pushing her hair out of her face in irritation, Jennie sat down, crosslegged, a reasonable distance from the edge. Falling off of a cliff didn't sound that great right about now.

The view was relaxing. It was something she always enjoyed; a desert reaching all the way to the horizon under a soft sky. Even in a moment of panic like this, it was somewhat soothing.

"Jennie?" Optimus.

He approached slowly, until he was a respectful distance away. Jennie turned a little to look up at him, squinting against the sunlight.

They had spoken a lot while Ratchet was gone. Jennie was significantly more lonely, and missed him terribly. The Prime being rather close to the medic possessed a level of empathy that nobody else did. It was nice to have that comfort.

"Hi, Optimus." She greeted quietly.

Optimus slowly knelt down beside her. "We are about to investigate a possible M.E.C.H. location. I need you to power the groundbridge while we are gone." He asked softly.

"Yeah, I can..." Jennie nodded and stood up, dusting her pants off. "Do you... really think this is it?" She asked, voice hesitant.

A soft vent escaped the Prime. "I am not certain. We can only hope."

Of course. She had heard that one before.

Jennie sighed heavily. "Alright."

After sending her a sympathetic look, Optimus rose to his pedes and led the way back to the lift.

Arcee, Bulkhead and Optimus left through the bridge to search, leaving Jennie to boredly stare at the bridge.

It was quiet for around an hour before Bumblebee arrived, Jack, Raf and Miko in tow. They all joined Jennie on the railing solemnly.

"Anything yet?" Raf asked quietly.

"They're looking right now."

"That could mean something." Miko offered. "They're probably onto something." She smiled at Jennie hopefully.

Jennie shrugged. "Yeah... Maybe."

Jack and Raf immediately fell into racing games, per usual, while Jennie and Miko watched. Bumblebee had approached the monitor, and was taking a look where the others had gone.

It wasn't long before the monitor's com link rang with Optimus' voice.

"Jennie, are you there? We have found M.E.C.H.'s headquarters. Prepare to operate the groundbridge, and if Bumblebee returns, send him immediately."

Jennie's heart jumped in it's speed. "Oh my God..." She whispered to herself, jumping to her feet.

Bumblebee was working in a flash, opening a bridge and racing through. Raf took control of it once he was gone.

And now, it was the waiting game.

Jennie was pacing miserably, heart pounding.

Was this it?

Had they really found him?

She was so ready for him to return...

But she wasn't prepared for him to return unconscious in Optimus and Bulkhead's arms.
