Untouchable, 25
Jason's mother died, how and when? I'm watching him, smiling and running with the ball. I can't imagine that he felt that way for so long. I always had the images of him being so strong, nothing can bring him down...him being untouchable. I was wrong, he is mostly human after all. His family hadn't seen him laugh for years.
"What happened to his mother?" Something suddenly comes to my mind. "No, never mind, they can hear us," I whisper. I don't know if Jason wants Valentina to tell me about this.
Valentina looks at me and nods. "Yes, you never know when they are listening." She rolls her eyes and throws her hair over her shoulder. She has different shades of brown in her hair.
"Did you dye your hair, it's really pretty.''
"Thank you, no, this is my natural hair, have you dyed your hair?" Her eyes are now shooting at my hair.
"No, don't think I'm going to do that." I answer. I have seen so many videos of people with dark her trying to color their hair going wrong, that I don't even wanna try it/
"This color, black, looks great on you." she smiles kindly.
I smile back, "Thank you,"
We are talking about the latest hair models. She doesn't believe it when I tell her that people a school walk around with blue and pink hair.
Celly walks up to the other boys. When Jayden sees that, he kicks the ball a bit slower. Celly stops and says something. I can't hear what he is saying, it will be something about him wanting to join them. Jason now has the ball and stops when Celly walks on the field. He smiles and kicks the ball very slowly towards Celly. Celly kicks the ball back but he doesn't go further than 3 meters. Jason walks to the ball and kicks to Celly again. The others don't seem to want to play like that. Jayden says something to Jason but Jason shakes his head and keeps playing with Celly. The others walk on and continue to play soccer. Tyler had given Jayden two balls to see which one was better. Jason turns a bit so that he is in front of the goal. Celly shoots in the goal's direction, Jason deliberately turns the other way so the ball goes in. Valentina and I both clap and Celly laughs cheerfully.
Valentina asks a few questions about school. I tell her about the different students, about the teachers, the classes, the tests and almost everything that can be told about school. She remains interested and listens to the most boring things. The excitement goes away when I'm talking about friends, meeting, and working together. She never had the chance to make friends. Should I ask her if she wants to join my friends the next time? I think they will all like each other, she would fit in the group well. Maybe that's not a good idea my friend would think it's weird that I hang out with Jason his family/friend and I don't think she is allowed to. I can ask if she wants to meet up, just girl talk?
"Would you like to hang out sometime? We can do whatever you want." I ask, not sure if she wants to.
Her eyes light up, "Yes that would be nice, "she says with a hesitant smile.
On Wednesday, I'm always done with class early. I would have reason to come here. My mother will take something with her or she will forget something at Christina's.
"Wednesday afternoon?'' She looks lost in thoughts and kind of uncomfortable. Just when I want to say that we don't have to hang out she starts talking.
"Yes that fine, I have class until 1 am but after that, I'm free." Her enthusiasm is contagious. She smiles brightly again.
"Okay on Wednesday half-past one here?" She nods in agreement.
Jason and Celly sit on the grass and look at the clouds. Celly gets up again and runs to the ball. He wants to kick the ball again but misses and falls. I want to get up to help him, just out of reflex. Jason is already walking towards him so I stay put. He squats down and lifts Celly up. He wipes the grass off his clothes and says something. I can tell that Celly wants to cry. He cries very quickly. Jason tickles him on his belly and he laughs again.
I hear the sound of the door opening.
"Guys come, let's eat!" Christina shouts. I look at Valentina and point at the door. "I have to go, it was nice to meet you," I say and get up. She also stands up and to my surprise, she hugs me tightly. I smile and hug her back before getting my crutches.
"I will see you Wednesday," she says still smiling. Jason walks over to me with Celly on his shoulders. He moves like he is an airplane and I can hear Celly laughing from here. Everyone would get a smile on there, seeing their cheerfulness. Jake walks over to Valentina and waves at me. I wave back through my crutches, which looks kinda weird.
When Jason and Celly are in front of me, Jason lifts Celly of his shoulder and puts him down. Then he squads to face him. "Well, goodbye, big friend." He says.
"Bye, Jason," Celly says, taking a step forward and giving Jason a hug. Celly normally never like people that fast. He comes to stand with me and I go come my finger through his hair so it's in model again. Jason stands up and then looks at me.
"You have a nice family."
"Thanks, so do you," I say and look at the table where Valentina and Jake are standing. He smiles and suddenly looks a bit uncomfortable. I don't understand why but then it comes to mind. I talked to Valentina for almost an hour, he does not know about what. He could have overheard us, but luckily he didn't. His eyes shoot to the door. My other cousins are already walking inside.
"Uhm I have to go," I turn toward the door a little.
He puts his hands in his pockets and smiles. "Yes, I'll see you on Monday." He says. The clouds go away before the sun catches a ray of sunlight on his face and brightens his eyes. A butterfly flies between us, it is just like a butterfly I saw last time.
"Yeah, see you Monday," I say, forcing myself to walk away.
Celly realizes that we are going so he walks ahead of me to the door. When we are inside I turn around to close the door and see the three of them at the table. They smile and just want to walk away. I close the door and walk inside.
We eat pizza and play 30 seconds, after that, we play a goose game. Nisha and I are the first to finish, so we go sit on the balcony. It already is half past twelve and getting colder. We are sitting on a bench with blankets. Amira and Ryan have already gone home. Celly sits between me and Nisha. He just fell asleep and lies against me. I am staring at the sky with tea in my hands. The moon shines bright, just hanging above the treetops.
"Last week all the math exams were stolen,'' She says while taking a sip of her tea. She is in her last year of high school and does a program where she starts doing some exams earlier. I look at her waiting until she continues.
''So the teachers started checking everyone's bag and locker. They finally found the exams in my best friend's locker. Jenna, you know Jenna right? She is the blond awkward girl at my birthday, who dropped the cake.''
I quickly nod, smiling at the memory off Jenna's reaction at the moment.
''I know she would never do that, she has never cheated on a test. Even when the teachers told us we could take our notes with us to the test, she still refused to do that because it wouldn't be fair. They suspended her until her boyfriend's best friend went to the principal and told the truth. Her boyfriend actually stole them and put them in her locker when he heard they were going to check. He is an asshole, but I already told her that before she started dating him," she says in horror.
"Wow, he is an asshole.'' She probably didn't expect her boyfriend to do that.
"She immediately broke up with him when she found out."
We talk about school and about boys. Well, she talks about boys, I just listen. After fifteen minutes, Nisha also falls asleep. I drink my tea and look forward to the moon and the trees.
My test week is in 2 weeks. I think it will be fine because I understand all the material so far. I only really have to learn economics, all those formulas. For the rest, I'm just going to read over the stuff I need to know every day and it should be fine.
When my tea is finished I grab my phone and read the messages in the class chat where Gina asks for the class schedule, for a long time no one responds until Maya sends it. Then I read the messages from the girl group. Sylvana talks about a nice boy who works at her favorite stores. I am shocked when I suddenly hear a loud noise.
"Aouhh!" The sound takes all of my attention, causing me to have goosebumps all over my arms. I know what that sound was and I instantly know who it belongs to. I have a small smile on my face and put my cup on the ground. It was a howl of a wolf, of Jason.
I look at Celly and Nisha but they continue to sleep undisturbed. They didn't hear it because they are normal people. I gently place Celly against Nisha. I get up and stand against the railing of the balcony looking over the forest.
