math class, 7
When I arrive at school, I walk in a straight line through the door to my locker. The same thoughts go through my mind all morning. What will happen today? Will he ask me what I am again? Or will he not show up and just stay gone?
When I open my locker, I hear a group of girls talking. I pick up a few words and already know what's going on.
"Have you seen him, I haven't yet but ..." The girl with the light blue hair says hysterically to her friends. I close my locker and walk away. It's just a handsome boy, not a celebrity or something.
When I walk into the restroom, I see Jade already busy with her mascara.
"Hey, Jade," I say and notice how soft my voice is. I clear my throat and stand next to her by the mirror. I do my hair and look at my face which looks tired even though I slept well last night.
"How are you?" She asks, looking at me in the mirror.
"Fine, and you?" Before she answers, we hear voices and see Indira and Sylvana enter the restroom.
"Heeyyy!" Indira shout like she is surprised to see us here. Like we don't do this every morning before class.
I give them a hug. The four of us stand in front of the mirror. Sylvana makes a tail in her hair and Indira puts on her lip gloss.
"Hey girls, he is standing there, talking to Dimelo and the whole group at the canteen," Indira whispers as if they could hear us. I look at myself in the mirror and try to keep my reaction normal, I smile briefly.
Great, he is back.
When the bell rings, we all walk out of the restroom. I turn my head and look at everything except the canteen.
"What class do we have now?" Jade asks. I take my schedule from my bag.
"English," We greet the others and walk up the stairs. In the meantime, I look at the announcements board. Maybe there will be something fun soon, a tournament or something else. The only thing that attracts my attention is the announcement that says our English teacher is sick.
"Jade, class is canceled," I say, still looking at the board.
"Wow, really I hate this school. Why couldn't they put it on the site sooner? What the hell is the point of putting it online five minutes before class begins?" She scolds.
"Shall we sit in the auditorium?" I ask. She nods and we walk on. We are on the second floor, from here we can also enter the auditorium.
The auditorium consists of a huge staircase with a normal staircase on the sides. The large staircase is to sit on. It is so wide that you can stretch your legs without them hanging over the step. Well, I can stretch my legs, people with longer legs can't without them hanging over the step, so most people can't.
Downstairs is a large open space, where now a very large group of boys is standing. They will probably go away as soon as the bell rings. We sit at the top of the stairs. I take my bag off and place it next to me.
"What do you think of our classmates?" I ask. She has her eyes closed and leans her head back.
"We have 12 girls and 17 boys. The girls are in 2 groups, the barbies, and the losers...oh and us of course. With the boy's there are 3 groups, the "gangster", the nice boys and the loners, "she explains.
Wow, she was kind to call a certain group nice.
"Oh, okay," I look at her and see that she almost falls asleep.
"Jade, did you sleep last night?"
"No, not really, I stayed up until 4 in the morning because of the new song by Tyga ft. Kanye West would be released," She looks irritated again. "But there were problems so it won't be released until next week. Around 7 o'clock, the alarm went off again.
"You could have just slept and listened to that song a few hours later," I say and try not to laugh. She rolls her eyes and then closes them. I take my sketchbooks from my bag.
The bell rings, but a large group of the boys doesn't move. Their class is probably canceled too. They are all juniors and seniors. A few laugh noisily at a video that is being shown on one of their phones, a few others play football with a can, while another group of boys is talking amongst one another. After a while, I see that Jason is one of the boys. He talks to them just like any other normal boy would. He is standing with his back to me. He is wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and black pants with holes. He talks to the boy to his right, I don't know his name but he's probably nice. When I was a freshman and walked into the wrong room, he walked me to the right room and showed me the shortcut.
Jade moves next to me. Her eyes follow my gaze.
"He seems pretty normal," she looks from Jason to me.
I nod, "I think I was wrong, just because his eyes look like the"wolf boy's"doesn't mean it's him."
I don't mean this. I'm not sure yet.
"Yes, I think so," she says absently, leaning her head back again. On the other side of the auditorium, a few freshmen are playing games on their phones.
I'm looking at the ground again. Jason and the boy, whose name I don't know, walk away and sit on the benches on the side of the auditorium. Now I can see his face. They talk, and the boy gives Jason a headphone, probably to listen to music. He laughs, the dimples in his cheeks and the wrinkles by his eyes appear making his face look softer.
Okay Cira, stop staring. I take my pencil and continue with my drawing.
Jade's head falls to the side. Ha, she's sleeping, I slowly push her head back to normal, because it didn't look very comfortable and her neck will probably hurt when she wakes up.
I look back at Jason again, I can watch as many times as I want, I have seen him change from wolf to human. He looks around him. The other boy is apparently playing a game on his phone because he is moving his phone like a steering wheel.
Jason's eyes fall on me. His facial expression changed from relaxed and curious to emotionless. He holds my gaze, I want to look away and act like I wasn't staring but I can't. I would feel weak when I look away so I don't.
It didn't take long before the boy next to him tried to get his attention with his game and he looked away. I breathe out and rub my thumb over the right corner of the paper. How can one look make me feel nervous?
The rest of the hour my eyes stay on my drawing but I can't concentrate anymore. I see Jade moving out of the corner of my eye. I pick up my phone again to see what time it is, almost time for class.
"Jade, wake up," I whisper and gently tap her on her shoulder. She looks up confused and blinks her eyes. When she realizes where she is she looks annoyed again.
Jade and I are the first to enter the room and sit in the back right corner. I take my books and open them. She leans her head against the wall and closes her eyes again.
Okay, let's pay attention to my classmates, I tell myself. A group of six girls come in. I immediately understand what Jade means by barbies. Tight tops, short skirts, false eyelashes, lots of makeup, handbags, and of course their attitude, loud giggling and hair flipping.
Next, a group of boys comes in. All different types of hair but the same clothing style. Jeans with sports brand shirts and sneakers.
The rest of the class comes in slowly. A few boys sit down in front of us. Everyone is talking until the teacher comes and tells everyone to be silent. I can vaguely remember last week's maths lesson. It was about calculations of mass through the circumference or something.
"You can put your books away, we will do a practical assignment today." The teacher, I have no idea what his name is, hands out the assignment and divides the class into groups. He is constantly touching his glasses while explaining the assignment.
I'm in a group with three boys and one girl. One of the boys is called Klaus, he is tall and talks a lot. He has orange, curly hair and is full of freckles. He is part of that group of boys who first entered the classroom.
The other boy, Diaro, also part of that group. He has pitch-black hair and looks very well-groomed. He is slightly shorter than Klaus.
Then you have Kendall, who does not belong to the group of Klaus and Diaro. He seems like a soft person. He is wearing glasses and is slightly taller than me. He doesn't say much and looks more at the rest.
The girl in my group is called Dana, she walked in with the "Girly" girls. She has shiny dark brown curly hair and looks annoyed with the fact that she isn't in a group with her friends.
Our assignment is to calculate the mass of objects in the school.
"With this assignment, you will be graded on your skill to work in teams. I want you to state on the extra sheet who did what."
While walking I am the one who writes everything down. Klaus and Dana measure and Diaro and Kendall calculate. I mainly walk with Kendall, he gives me the answers so I can write them down. He is quiet and certainly not going to start a conversation so I will do it.
"How do you like the class so far?" I look at him and tap the paper with my pen. We now measure the candy machine.
"I think it's a nice class, but I haven't talked to many people yet, you? "He looks friendly.
"Yes, the same." I smile briefly.
"Did you know anyone in the class?"
"Yes, only Jade."
Diaro shows me his calculator and I quickly copy it, and then he runs away again. Now on the way to the tables on the bottom floor.
"Ohw, I was in class with Peter and Mihno last year," he explains.
When we have completed half of the assignment, Kendall and Klaus change tasks. We lean against the wall and watch while Dana and Kendall are measuring the table.
Only the benches in the auditorium and the lockers.
While walking, Diaro and Klaus push each other and laugh all the time. Klaus shows his calculator and I walk to the table to write it down.
"I'll read it out loud," he says, standing next to the table, Diaro on the other side. I nod and he answers. Klaus walks next to me while walking to the auditorium.
"What's your name," he asks, embarrassed. "You were not in the introduction round yesterday."
I nod, that was when I had to show Jason around.
"Cira," I say and smile.
Diaro walks to us from the other side and gives me the answer.
"Why weren't you there yesterday?" Diaro asks. Of course, they also saw that I was taken out of class by Mr. van Dijk
"I had to show a new boy around." They are both silent, looking at each other and then back at me. Okay, what was that about?
"Oh, really, I thought he was a junior," Klaus comments while Diaro looks at me in curiosity.
"Uhm yes that's right," I say surprised by their response. "I don't know why I had to show him around."
"Then why didn't you ask?" Klaus asks with an accusing smile.
I found out when the tour had already started.
"Uhm ..."
"You are just as much of a" fan" of him as all the other girls are," Diaro says and they both laugh.
"No," I uncomfortably press my lips together. Believe me, I'm not. "I didn't know he was a junior till the tour started."
"No, of course, you didn't know," says Klaus, laughing again.
I roll my eyes at them and look at the assignment again.
A few minutes before the bell rings we walk back to the room to hand in the assignment.
The rest of the morning goes by fast, I get to know the other girls in the class because Jade and I sit down with Dana. They are not that bad. We don't really have to talk because most of the time they're taking selfies or making snapchat videos. Jade already has an opinion about them and it will not change soon. When the bell rings it's lunchtime.
