Chapter 75
Stacey got in the back with me, and two policemen got in the front. I stared out of the window. Lights flashed by, and rain spattered the window. My mind was blank. I was wrapped in a blanket and taken to the same police station that I'd been taken to after the raid.
They ushered me up the stairs to the large room where the desks were. People sat at different desks being questioned. The only one I recognised was Ryan. He stared at me. I hung my head to avoid making eye contact.
Stacey sat me on the bench. "They won't take long. Do you want some coffee?"
"White, no sugar, please."
A loud commotion made me look up. Gillian and Josie were led along the corridor and into the room. The same large detective who had attempted to talk Brock down yelled, "Lock 'em up!"
He glanced in my direction and then returned to where he'd come from.
I hung my head again as the two women passed.
Stacey came back with my coffee, tepid and tasteless. "I'm sorry," I said. "I can't drink that."
She grinned. "I know it's crap but you should drink it, you're going to need it." She steered it towards my mouth. "Just scull it. If you're lucky, it'll miss your taste buds."
I nodded and did what she said.
A detective that I hadn't seen before touched my arm. "Okay, you're up. Detective Grogan wants to see you. We're in interrogation room three, Stacey." He gave her an inquiring look and asked, "Have you said anything?"
Stacey shook her head. "No. I gave her some coffee."
The detective sighed. "Grogan says it'll be okay, so we'll have to play it by ear."
Their words confused me.
As we got to the door, a voice inside said, "This is a bad idea."
A familiar voice said, "It'll be okay. Take these off me."
The detective I was with knocked on the door, opened it a fraction and said, "You set? She's here."
When the door opened, the large detective from the warehouse appeared in front of me. Stan stood in the corner. A surge of panic hit me. A chair scraped, and Adam clambered to his feet with his hands behind his back.
I gripped the blanket and backed away. The detective holding my arm steered me into the room. He closed the door and said, "Is this her?"
Adam nodded. "Yeah."
I gasped, "I don't know anything about what he does. Please let me go."
Adam whispered, "It's alright, honey...shush."
Stan swept his hands over his head. "Adam, this is a bad idea. You shouldn't have done it this way."
I had no idea what was happening and pleaded with the policeman holding me. "Please, I want to leave."
He manoeuvred me onto a chair. "You need to be here," he said and left with Stacey, leaving me with Adam, Stan and the other man I assumed was Detective Grogan.
I said, "Detective Grogan, I don't know what he's involved in, please...I don't want to be here."
Adam sighed and growled, "Come on, Kaye. Take these things off me."
The detective stepped towards him with a key in his hands.
I jerked to my feet. "Please, Detective Grogan, don't do that. I don't want to be here."
"I'm not Grogan," he said. "I'm Kaye. Detective Kaye." He pointed at Adam. "This is Grogan."
I couldn't breathe. I backed into the corner, clutching the blanket, shaking my head as Adam rubbed his wrists where the handcuffs had been. I fought for air. Stan grabbed my arm to steady me.
"Thanks, Henry," Adam said to the big man as he came towards me. "Can you both give us some space?"
"Yeah sure, Gro," Stan said.
Panic seized me again. My head spun. I was sure shock was setting in. I yelled, "No! Please don't leave me!"
"Henry, can you tell her who I am?"
"He's Grogan," The large man said, "Detective Adam Grogan. He won't hurt you. But I'm sure you know that already."
I covered my face, trying to still the pounding in my head. I gasped in deep breaths. I had to calm down so I could absorb what was going on.
My legs buckled. Adam caught me as I fell. "Shush, honey, come on," he whispered. "It's okay."
A mournful sound erupted from me. I held my breath to try and stop it.
Adam carried me to one of the chairs, sat me on his lap and cradled my head against his chest. "I'm an undercover cop, Jasmine. I work drug cases. There's a team of us. Gillian's my partner, Stan and Josie too. For two years, I've worked my way to being a top player in a gang called Skar*ma*. They do some heavy shit you don't need to know about. This tattoo." He tapped his neck. "The star, I'm sure, Daniel recognised, is their symbol. Brock was the leader." Adam took a breath. "We got them. We got the lot tonight. It's been a stressful week. Tonight was the hit. I'm sorry, so sorry you got dragged into this, and for my actions towards you. When I saw you there...fuck! I had to say those things to pretend that I didn't care." He kissed the top of my head and took another breath. "If I showed I cared, he'd have hurt you?" Adam tilted my face upwards and asked, "Did he hurt you?"
I shook my head, so he continued. "I'm sorry I yelled at you like that. I was scared in case you came out when the others were there. If they knew you existed, they'd use you against me like Brock did." Adam paused and then said, "Gillian was right. I should have left you be, but I couldn't. The moment I first saw you on that train, I knew you were the girl for me. I'm so sorry. Sorry for the hurt I've put you through." He sighed. "I know it's confusing and I can't tell you much more than that, but if there's anything you want to ask me, I'll try to answer it."
A surge of relief swept through me. Adam wasn't Mr Wrong. He was Mr Right. Even though I had many questions, I blurted. "Do you love me?"
Adam laughed. "You're the most important person in my life. Yes, I love you, Jasmine."
As soon as I heard the words, I cupped his face, kissed him, then put my forehead against his and sobbed. He was my Mr Right. Adam pulled me against him, cradled my head and kissed my eyelids. "Shush...come on, honey, it's okay. We're going to be okay."
"So, it's over now," I said with hope on my face. "We can go home, and you'll stay with me?"
"Not yet." Adam shook his head. "Soon. I have to finish it, but yes, the worst of it's over."
I didn't hear the door open, but a man said, "You done? We gotta get on with it."
"Yeah...just a minute more," Adam answered and then said, "Jasmine, I've got to go. It's alright. They need you to answer some questions and have samples taken from your body. They want photos of your injuries, too. They'll let you go as soon as they're finished."
I peered at his face.
He frowned, touched my cheek, and then lifted my chin. "What happened? How did this happen?"
I touched my chin, trying to remember. "I hid under the table. Brock knocked it over, and the leg caught me and that guy Ryan hit me in the car. I tried to fight." I gasped at the horror and then blurted, "I peed my pants."
Adam smiled and kissed away my tears. "Yeah, you did. It was perfect timing. You were so brave, honey." He said, "I didn't expect you to hit Brock like you did. You scared the shit out of me. I thought he was going to kill you."
"Would you have let him rape me?" I gasped.
Adam closed his eyes, drew in a breath and exhaled. "No...never. I was going to hit him when you wet yourself. It helped me do what I did without jeopardising anything. I had to pretend I didn't care, Jasmine. I was trying to bluff him. I hoped he'd forget about it if you didn't mean anything to me. How did he find you?"
"Ryan picked me up. He flirted with me on the train. I'm sorry," I murmured. "He conned me. He was nice and made me laugh." I studied Adam's face and whispered, "We'd broken up, and I thought I was seizing a moment. Like you said about seizing moments. I hoped a date with someone else would help me get over you. He convinced me to go out to dinner with him." I gasped for breath. "He knows my address and phone number, Adam. I'm scared he'll come and get me again?"
"Is Daniel staying with you?"
I shook my head.
"Ring him, get him to come and get you, to take you home. I don't want you to be alone."
"Come on, Adam." The detective waiting held out a pair of handcuffs. "Sorry, but we've got to get on with it."
"Yeah, alright, Kaye. Keep your pants on."
A sudden memory of Adam using the name Kay came back to me. I'd assumed he was talking about a woman. I burst into laughter.
Adam jerked his head back in shock at my outburst.
"This is Kay?" I said, pointing.
"Yeah...this is Kaye." Adam laughed and glanced at Detective Kaye. "She thought you were a woman and asked me if I'd had sex with you."
Kaye laughed and shook his head. "I know you've always had a crush on me, Gro, but I'm married."
Once more, I gasped in shock at the realisation that his surname wasn't Croe. "You're Gro! Kye called you Gro! He knows your real name?"
Adam patted me on the hip and grinned at me. "Yeah, honey, he knows my real name." He kissed me and then said, "I gotta go now."
Adam put me on my feet and held his hands behind his back so Kaye could cuff him. "I'll be with you as soon as I can. I'd like you to go to your parents. Stay away from your unit until I can sort something, okay?"
I nodded, stood on tiptoe and kissed him on the lips.
Adam nudged his head at me, and then he said to Kaye, "Take her back first."
The detective led me out the door, where Stacey was waiting. "Get her statement and samples straight away. She also needs to ring her brother."
Stacey sat me down at one of the desks and let me ring Daniel. He panicked when I said I was at the police station. "What have you done?"
Overwhelmed by emotion, I couldn't speak. I handed Stacey the phone. She said, "She's done nothing wrong. She was the victim. It'd be a good idea if you came straight away."
Another detective asked me questions. I told as much of the story as I could remember, right from meeting Ryan on the train. Halfway through my interview, loud voices echoed down the corridor. Adam was dragged into the room; his nose was bleeding. Kaye yelled, "Lock him up!"
I had to look away. What a horrible job he had. Wally's words came back to me. "I don't like what he does." Did Wally know what he did?
Well, well, well!!! Who guessed what Adam did for a living?
Hahaha I think most of you guessed it. Who didn't?
