Chapter 71

I got to Kæ'feı 'Rɒbərt around three o'clock to find both Gary and Robert going through the stock.

"Hey, Jasmine. Sorry about this," Robert said. "Do you want a coffee, there's some made."

I poured myself a cup and called over my shoulder, "I've brought back the costume."

"Thanks," Robert said, "If we stay open, do you want your job?"

I cocked my head and shrugged. "Give me a call. I've been to the Job Centre. There were a lot of waitress positions, but I might try something different." I said, "There's a live-in nanny for a single father that comes with a car and other benefits."

Robert frowned at me as he said, "How will your boyfriend take that?"

I couldn't help but cry.

Robert hugged me. "What's going on?"

"He was at the police station," I blurted. "In handcuffs," I told them the whole story.

"I knew he was a shit," Robert sneered. "You're better off out of it, Jazz."

I nodded and dried my face. "Yeah, I know," I blubbered. "It just hurts a lot."

Gary changed the subject. They didn't need to be burdened with my problems on top of theirs. I collected my clothes and then hugged them both before I left. "Give me a ring if you need me," I said. "You guys are great to work for. Thanks for everything."

I ambled to the train, mulling over my options. I could move back home, but I didn't want to do that. It meant I'd have to work through my grief with my mother on my case about how she knew he wasn't right for me. Then she'd push Kyle onto me.

As I made my way into the carriage, a man followed me, and though most of the seats were vacant, he sat next to me. I frowned.

He smiled. "I hope you don't mind if I sit next to you. It's not every day a pretty girl crosses my path."

Intimidated, I blushed with embarrassment at his forwardness. He was attractive, but I didn't need another Train Guy in my life.

His bright blue eyes twinkled. He grinned and ran his hand through his thick blonde hair, reminding me of a cheeky little boy. I guessed he had won a lot of hearts with that look.

"Sorry," he said before I could say anything. "That was rude of me. I'm not great with women and thought I'd try the forward approach."

I burst into laughter. "Maybe not the greatest technique," I said.

He laughed. "At least you're talking to me."

"Yeah, I am. I guess it worked." I didn't believe he wasn't great with women and his smile was so sweet.

He held out his hand. "I'm Ryan."

"Jasmine." I smiled.

We shook hands. He said, "Do you catch this train every day?"

"Yes, but I'm usually on the 6.20."

"Fate must be smiling on me." He grinned, studied my face and cocked his head as he said, "Could I buy you dinner?"

I shook my head. Nope. No more Train Guys in my life. No way. Narda. Not happening. I said, "I'm sorry it's not a good time for me right now. I'm going through a breakup. I wouldn't be good company."

Ryan's eyes widened. He twisted his mouth in a grim smile and said, "Fate is definitely in play here. I'm going through a breakup, too. Maybe we could cry on each other's shoulders. What do you say?"

My heart thrummed in my chest. I wasn't sure if it was anxiety, excitement or fear. Adam had said he believed in seizing the moments. If I dated straight away, I would forget him quicker and not go through the same hurt twice. Did I have the balls to seize a moment?

Maybe fate was handing me Mr Right, and this was my last chance. I tossed the image of the quaint house with the pretty flowers in one hand and me curled up on cardboard in the old warehouse in the other. Before I could change my mind, I nodded and said, "Okay."

Ryan beamed. "Great...will tomorrow night suit you?" I nodded. He pulled out his phone. "Give me your number and address. I'll pick you up at seven. Is that okay?"

"That suits me," I said, then told him my address. To know he wanted my number straight away felt pretty good. As he tapped everything into his phone, I studied his dress. He was wearing polished, pointed leather shoes, tan chinos and a navy, collared, Ralph Lauren T-shirt. They had both been ironed. He was clean-shaven, and though his hair was tousled, it was clean.

"What do you do, Ryan?" I asked.

He glanced up from his phone, smiled and said, "I'm a doctor."

I burst into laughter. Could this get any better? My mother would be ecstatic if I brought him home to meet the family.

He cocked his head at me in question. "What? You don't like doctors?"

"I'm sorry," I giggled. "I haven't been hit on by a doctor before." I'd never tell him about Kyle or my mother's ambition for me.

"So, how'd I go? Did I do better than the other working sectors?"

"Smooth..." I laughed and eyed him with approval. "Very smooth."

We talked about everyday things until my stop came up. "This is my station," I said.

He got up and let me slide out of the seat. "I'll pick you up tomorrow night."

"Okay. See you then," I said.

Ryan kissed my cheek. He smiled and said, "I feel like this is our first date. I hope that warrants a kiss on the cheek."

Heat flushed my face. His warm and soft lips made me think of Adam. Our relationship had been full-on from the beginning. I wasn't going to let that happen again. I didn't kiss Ryan; his expression told me he'd have liked it if I did. I waved instead. "Bye."

He watched me walk along the corridor. I hoped my skirt wasn't stuck in my bum because my knickers were giving me a wedgie. He waved as the train took off. I waved again. A nice sensation swept over me. I had seized a moment, and it felt good.

I got into bed that night and fought with my emotions. I felt I was being unfaithful to Adam. I know that sounds stupid, but I couldn't stop remembering the good times. My heart broke. I'd ring Ryan in the morning and cancel.

Then I remembered I hadn't taken his number.

He rang me at lunchtime. "Hi, Jasmine, it's Ryan. We met on the train yesterday."

"Oh yes, Ryan, I..."

He cut me off. "No. You're not going to pull out on me. Please tell me you're not doing that."

"I'm not in a good place right now. I'm sorry."

He sighed into the phone. "Jasmine," he said. "I'm not in a great place either, but I'm trying to get on with my life. It's dinner, not marriage. Please. I'm a nice bloke. I rang to say hello and ask how your day was going." He laughed down the line. "If you saw my face right now, you'd see sad puppy dog eyes. Blue, by the way. Pleading up at you."

He made me laugh and sounded so sincere. "You mean down," I said. "You're taller than I am."

"No," he laughed. "I mean up because I'm on my knees right now."

I laughed and said, "Alright, you win. I'll see you at seven."

He sighed and said, "Good girl."

Jasmine!! What are you doing?  No more Train Guys!! Even if he's a hot doctor.

Has Jasmine seized a moment or another lot of trouble?
