Chapter 63
We slept in until eleven. He woke me with a cup of tea. I stretched like a cat in the warm sun and then sat to drink it.
"Jasmine?"
"Adam?"
He laughed and touched my face with his fingers. "Hypothetically, if you had to move to another state, would you?"
I frowned and studied his face. "Like how do you mean?"
"Like...let's pretend you were married to...Kyle, and he had to work in, let's say, Western Australia. Would you go? Leave your family and go."
"No." I took a sip of my tea and waited for his response.
"Why not?"
I swallowed. "Well, I wouldn't be married to Kyle, and I don't like Western Australia. If I were married or living with someone else and was going to have to move to Queensland or New South Wales. Maybe South Australia or Tasmania. Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate."
Adam laughed and went to the kitchen. I didn't ask him why he was asking me that question because I wasn't sure I'd like the answer. I clicked on the TV to distract me from the temptation.
He came back to the bed with a piece of jam toast. "Hurry up and eat that. Poor Molly's probably fretting. We'd better go and feed her."
"Oh shit." I scurried off the bed with the piece of toast in my mouth. "Why didn't you say?"
"Don't panic, she'll live." He patted my bum, lay on the bed and watched me get dressed. "How about you pack a change of clothes, and your work gear, and stay over tonight, then catch the train from my place."
"Maybe we should have gone to your place last night. I didn't consider Molly." I jumped on top of him and pinned his arms to the bed. "You'll be pleased to know Robert has changed me back to days."
Adam pulled a goofy face, crossed his eyes and grinned. "Great...maybe I should punch the prick so he'll sack you."
I smirked and ignored the comment. "Should I take a toothbrush to leave in your bathroom? I don't want you to get into trouble with your girlfriend."
He flipped us and leaned over me. "She won't mind so long as you're into threesomes."
"Adam! I'm not into threesomes of any kind. I told you that. I called it triangles."
"Ah...is that what you meant?"
I lifted my head in an attempt to nip him with my teeth.
He jerked away, kissed me, then pulled me to my feet, saying, "Come on. Poor Molly will be fretting."
Molly acted like a crazy dog. Adam fed her straight away, and then we took her for a walk. We held hands and bought ice cream.
"You're gonna make me fat if you keep feeding me ice cream," I joked.
"I'll make you work it off." Adam winked. "Sex is a great way to lose weight."
"Oo...I like that idea." I licked my cone and moaned.
Adam laughed and attempted to grab me. I bolted. He chased me down the street until I couldn't run any further because I was laughing so much.
When we got back to his place, I helped him pack his drum set into the back of his truck. He had to be in Werribee by three o'clock. The gig was from four until ten. I was so excited. I've never known anyone in a band before and looked forward to seeing Adam play.
We were the first to arrive. "Where's the rest of the band?" I said, looking around.
Adam laughed at me as he lifted the big kick drum out of the back of the Ute. "It takes the drummer longer to set up. The others should get here soon."
I carried drum after drum, foot pedals and stands inside for Adam to put them together.
After they were set up, he bought me a drink and patted my bum as we walked to a table. "You're a good groupie. I'll buy you drinks all night and get to take you home for some raunchy sex."
I sipped my drink. "You used your raunchy sex vouchers last night."
Adam was about to kiss me when someone called his name. Three men carrying guitars, a keyboard and speakers nudged their heads at him. Adam said, "I'll go and give them a hand."
"Do you want me to help?" I asked, putting my drink on the table, ready to stand.
He waved me down. "No, finish your drink."
When they finished setting up, Adam introduced me. "This is Jasmine and this is Mick, Brian and Hayden."
One said, "The girls should be here soon, so you won't have to sit alone."
"Should I sit at a closer table so you can put drinks on the table?"
"No," they laughed. "Better where you are. The music will be loud."
"What do you play?" I asked, curious to know.
Hayden shrugged. "Bit of hard rock, alternative rock, post-grunge, stuff like that."
I didn't know what he meant, but said, "Oh, wow. Great." I glanced at Adam. He grinned and then bent as they left to tune their instruments. "You didn't understand any of that, did you?"
I pouted. "Yes, I did. Hard rock is heavy metal."
He laughed, kissed me and said against my lips, "We're playing a lot of Nickelback, Hinder, Rob Thomas, Daughtry, Matchbox Twenty and some Silverchair with a bit of Lincoln Park, Green Day and Snow Patrol." He kissed me again. "Don't let anyone chat you up."
I saluted. "Yes, boss."
Adam banged randomly on his drums. He twisted the nobs, then he shifted them closer or further away.
When three women came into the room, the singer, Hayden, pointed at me. They came over. "Hi. Are you with the drummer?"
I grinned. "Yeah...Adam. I'm Jasmine."
"I'm Kathy, this is Karen and Shelly."
They were around my age, maybe a couple of years older. Kathy was Mick's girlfriend. Karen went with Brian, and Shelly was going out with Hayden, the singer and bass guitarist. Brian played the keyboard and Mick played the lead guitar. The band was called "Dogs Day Out". Not the best name, but I wasn't going to say. I hoped the name wasn't an indication of how good they were. When they played, I didn't doubt how good they were. My mouth opened in awe.
Hayden had one of those deep raspy voices that I love. I understood why they covered the bands they did. They sang Nickelback's "Next Contestant". I couldn't take my eyes off Adam. He was so good and even sang some backup vocals, which blew me away.
Hayden poured out the words. "Each night seems like It's getting worse, and I wish she'd take the night off, so I don't have to fight off, every asshole coming on to her."
Adam raised his eyebrows and cocked his head at me. He pouted. I grinned at him as he joined in singing the chorus. "Here comes the next contestant. Is that your hand on my girlfriend? Is that your hand? I wish you'd do it again. I'll watch you limping. There goes the next contestant." Adam hit his fist into the palm of his hand and grinned at me.
I couldn't help but laugh. The other girls gave me a strange look. I wasn't going to explain the joke. After the first couple of songs, Adam stripped his shirt and threw it beside him. He had a black singlet underneath. Seeing him play the drums with his tattoos and biceps bulging kept me smiling all night. I repeated in my head, "This guy is my boyfriend. Jasmine Baker's boyfriend is Adam Croe, and he's playing the drums right now."
"He's good...Adam," Kathy yelled over the music. "Mick said he was. They asked him to join, but he doesn't have the time. What does he do?"
"Works for the government." I decided to stick to his story.
Kathy accepted the answer, sipped her drink, and asked, "You're not drinking?"
"Yeah...I finished one before you came." I grinned. "Too busy watching Adam. I haven't seen him play before."
"Really, how long have you been going out?"
"Just a few months."
Kathy glanced at the band. "He's hot. I like his tats."
I laughed. "So do I."
She yanked her head toward the dance floor. "You want to dance, we usually dance."
I followed the girls into the small space vacant of tables.
Hayden belted out Hinder's "Get Stoned." We danced. I was a bit shy at first which was pretty stupid since I worked where I work. The girls soon got me into it. By the next song, I was laughing and having a great time.
I got myself another drink. After the first set, the guys sat with us.
Adam kissed me, gave me his wallet, and then wiped his arms with a towel. "Will you go and get me a beer and a bottle of water?"
"Of course?" I gave him another peck as he sat and said hello to the girls.
By the time I came back, they were discussing the next set and what songs they were going to play.
Adam said thanks when I put the beer in front of him. I handed him his wallet. He shook his head. "Hold on to it for me and pay for your drinks out of my money."
"No, it's okay, I can pay for my drinks."
He dragged my chair closer and grinned. "Don't argue. You worked hard this afternoon carrying my drums. I want to pay for your drinks."
I laughed and touched his face. "You are so good. Why don't you do this full-time?"
"I make more money doing other stuff," he said with a smirk.
I screwed up my face and sighed. "Well, you look the part in your singlet with your tattoos and muscles. It's good you don't do this full time because I'd be beating the women off with a large piece of wood."
Adam laughed and took a mouthful of his beer. "If you keep dancing the way you are, I'll be beating every male off with a piece of wood."
The guys got up, so he kissed me and followed.
Adam sounds like he's a perfect fit to be a drummer full time. ♥
The photo is my youngest son, taken a few years ago. Now you know why I love drummers. ♥♥♥
