Chapter Twenty-Six

Daryl's POV:

I stared down at Emma's lifeless body and couldn't help but worry, she has been asleep for an entire day now. I sat in the seat beside her bed and held her hand, gently rubbing my thumb over the knuckles on her hand. Her hand was so cold it made a chill run down my spine, and shivers hit me every time I thought that she might not make it. Emma was someone so special to me, it would honestly kill me inside if anything happened to her. Emma got shot doing something she always did, protecting the people she loved. Had Emma not done what she did we could have lost Rick, Maggie, Glenn and probably more....I just had to hope we never lose Emma.

Lately i had been feeling something different for her, especially after I kissed her when everyone got separated. It was like every nerve ending in my body was on fire when her lips met mine, and I would give anything in the world to feel that same feeling again. I had never been in love, never been with any woman that meant as much as this woman does right now. But the feeling stirring in my belly told me this was probably as close as I would ever get. I loved her, I loved Emma and I might not get the chance to tell her. The moment I saw Emma fall to the ground, blood pouring from her side, was the moment I realized it was love I had been feeling all along.

I bent down and gently kissed her sweaty forehead and let my lips linger on her skin for a few moments. Emma was burning up and freezing at the same time, it was strange and i only wished to make this pain go away. Her lung was still collapsed so her breathing was continuously raspy and abnormal, we didn't have the tools to fix it just yet. Her wound on her side was starting to heal, but that would only be worse later when Hershel had to open her back up. Today though, i was leaving to go find exactly what she needed, but the closest hospital was overrun and it was dangerous.

I sighed and kissed her forehead one last time before making my way out of the cell block. Rick, T-Dog and Glenn were all looking over a map in the living area. "We gonna hit the road or what?" I asked impatiently as I grabbed my crossbow that was on the table and slung it over my arm. "It'll be you, T-Dog and Glenn making this run. But you need to make it quick, the hospital is dangerous. Hershel made a list of what you need" Rick told us, he then handed Glenn some keys and walked off into the cell block. Hershel gave the list to T-Dog and I yanked the keys out of Glenn's hand and ran outside, jumping in the grey truck.

"Hurry up!" I yelled out the window to T-Dog and Glenn who were walking out of the cell block, Glenn was saying goodbye to Maggie and I honked the horn to speed them up. T-Dog climbed int he passenger seat while Glenn climbed in the cab in the back of the truck. I sped down the dirt pathway and through the gate that Carol opened and closed behind us. The hospital was about twenty miles away, and I drove as quickly as I could down the street. "Easy there tiger, we'll get there quick enough" T-Dog said from beside me. "Yeah Daryl, don't need us wrecking the truck before we get there" Glenn added.

I frowned and glared at him through the rear view window, "What if it was Maggie in there instead of Emma, you would be trying to rush too" I growled quietly and gripped the steering wheel tighter. I took a left turn up the street that led to the hospital and only slowed down a tad before speeding up again. "I would, but remember what happened when Lori hit that walker, you still have to be cautious man" Glenn told me, gently patting my shoulder before resting back in the seat. I sighed and nodded my head before slowing down to a normal driving speed.

"We know you love her, Emma is tough, shell pull through" T-Dog told me with a nod. I quickly looked over to see him smiling at me. "I don't know what your talking about" i said softly realizing I didn't even want to defend my feelings for her to them like I normally would. Any other woman and i would have told them to fuck off, that she meant nothing to me. But I couldn't do that with Emma, she was the first woman i didn't care about showing my feelings for in front of others, and the second I got the chance i would kiss her passionately not worrying about the others seeing us.

"You look at her the way I look at Maggie, only your more intense. It's unnerving" Glenn said as he shifted to sit in the center seat so he could talk to us. " I do, I love her" I whispered more to myself than the others. My brother had always told me that expressing your feelings to anyone was a sign of weakness, especially telling a woman. He said they were only good for one thing and one thing only, but that wasn't my Emma. These days we never knew how many days we had, and even though Merle was my blood no matter if he was alive or not, these two guys in this truck with me were my brothers and i would trust them with my life.

"You'll tell her when she wakes up then, look there's the hospital" Glenn said from the backseat pointing up ahead at a large white sign that said Governors Square Memorial Hospital. I parked the truck by the sign and grabbed my gear preparing for our task at hand. We all climbed out of the truck and ducked behind the passenger side to get a better look at the hospital. There were probably fifty walkers stumbling around the front of the building, too many for us to take down, we didn't have enough man power nor ammo for that.

There were some tall bushes along the front of the parking lot we could duck behind, that led to a less overrun part of the building, it looked to lead to the emergency wing of the hospital. I motioned to Glenn and T-Dog for what direction we were heading, and the three of us duck close to the ground and walked around the shrubbery. I quickly loaded my crossbow and peered around the end of the shrubbery. I smiled when i saw only three walkers standing around the emergency room entrance. I gave the signal with my hands telling T-Dog and Glenn what to do, after all this time together I think we all knew what the other was trying to say without words or hand gestures.

I quickly ducked around the shrubs and took down one walker silently with my crossbow, while Glenn's hatchet and T-Dog's large knife took down the other two silently. We stayed against the wall and peered around the corner, happy seeing none of the other walkers had seen our sudden appearance. This was an older hospital so the emergency room didn't have an automatic sliding door which worked to our advantage. I opened the door slowly and silently and quickly slipped inside, the guys following behind me.

I let out a low and quiet whistle to bring out any walkers that were lurking in this room, but i didn't hear anything but our steady breathing and the distance sounds of the walkers outside. I flicked on my flashlight and held it between my teeth seeing as my hands were busy with my crossbow. T-dog pulled out the picture and name of what we were needing, some sort of air pump that Hershel wrote down. I glared at the paper not knowing where the hell something like that would be, and where we would start.

"Watch" Glenn whispered to T-Dog, who nodded and went to take watch in the waiting room we entered through. Glenn slipped into a storage closet while I went a little farther down the hall and into a separate supply room. The room was empty, and seemed like nobody had bothered to look for supplies in here. I grabbed some medical gauze and antibiotics that were on a shelf, along with some pain killers and cold medicine. I found some medical equipment that looked useful and tossed it into my bag before I hit the jackpot and found just what Hershel drew for us. I grabbed a couple and stuffed them in my bag and started to look around for anything else useful.

I heard yelling outside, and took off running out into the hallway. A herd of walkers had found it's way into the waiting room from somewhere and had T-Dog cornered by dozens of them. Glenn started popping rounds off, as did T-Dog, but they were hardly putting in a dent. "T run!" I shouted over the chaos, trying to figure out a way to get T-Dog out of this mess. Glenn cursed as his gun clicked out of ammo and he quickly popped in another magazine, me taking my own gun out to help clear the crowd. But we were too late and one of the walkers had came up on his side and took a bite out of his neck.

"No!" Glenn and I both shouted as we watched our fellow group member cry out in pain. I angrily took out walkers left and right, and when my gun ran out of ammo I pulled a knife out and started hacking away and anything that was dead around us. "Go!" I heard T-Dog shout to us as walkers continuously took chunks out of his body. That was the last thing T-Dog said before he slunk to the ground dead, neither of us able to do anything but watch as the walkers fed on his flesh. Suddenly a pack of walkers had busted through the doors we entered through and blocked out exit.

"Glenn come on" I yelled over to Glenn who was using up the last of his ammo on walkers that were eating T-Dog. Glenn looked over and nodded before sprinting after me down a hallway, my lungs were on fire as i ran as fast as i could knowing that Emma needed what I had found for her. We took a left and was cut off by several walkers in hospital gowns forcing us to turn for a right. There were no walkers this way and I about jumped for joy seeing a glowing red exit sign just up ahead, and the two of us never looked back as we pushed our way out into the bright light.

We ran out into what looked like a random door that was at the front of the hospital, and I could see our truck parked just up ahead. The walkers that were once lingering around the front had wandered over to where we were before, probably from all the chaos and noise. Glenn and I looked around quickly before sprinting over to out truck and jumping inside. We both caught our breath for a few moments and nodded at the hospital in respect for our fallen group member, before pulling a U-Turn and driving back to the prison. I just had to hope after all the time I was gone that Emma hung on just that much longer, that somehow she knew just how much I needed her to survive and would pull through after all.
