Chapter Twenty-Four

"So where are we heading?" I asked Daryl as I yawned looking at a map he had spread across the table. We had woken up from our nap not too long ago, and the two of us were heading out to grab some formula while the others in the group went to clear out more parts of the prison. "There's a daycare about ten miles north of here, should have some" Daryl mumbled before rolling up the map and tossing it into his bag. I nodded and swung my bow onto my back and checked to make sure I had enough ammo in my gun. I only had about five bullets since we were running low, but they would have to do.

"We'll leave in ten" I told him as I tucked a knife into my black combat boot. Daryl smirked "Yes ma'am" he said and walked over to talk to Rick. Rick, Maggie, Glenn and T-Dog would be going through the rest of the prison trying to find the cafeteria and what not. Carol, Hershel and Beth along with baby Judith would stay in the cell block, while Carl would stand guard at the gate. I think Carl was excited to be able to run off by himself for a change. I walked into the cell's to see Judith sleeping on a bunk while Beth hummed quietly beside her on the floor. "We should be back soon with the formula, but if something happens and we don't make it back just give her water until you dad can find some, ok?" I told her softly as not to wake Judith.

"You always come back, I'm not worried" Beth said smiling before digging through her bag for something. I nodded and walked back through the cell block to find Daryl.

"Ready to go?" i asked when I found him standing alone over by the door to outside. He nodded and opened the creaking door, holding it open as I walked outside. The sun was hidden slightly behind the tall trees as it was getting later in the day, it made it cooler weather wise, but the walkers got riled up by the night for some reason....we would need to make this a quick run, especially since Judith needed formula as soon as possible. "Wanna let me drive the bike?" I asked as we walked towards his black Harley. He looked over me with a raised eyebrow while I just grinned eagerly over at him. We went back after i left his bike on the side of the road and brought it back before coming to the prison.

"Maybe next time Em's" He said with a chuckle before swinging his leg over the seat. I sighed before following suit and wrapping my arms around his waist. Daryl put a hand over mine that was resting on his waist, gave my hand a gentle squeeze before starting the bike up. He took off slowly through the open gate that Carl stood beside before driving through, Carl shutting it behind us before any stray walkers could run through the open gate.

It wasn't a long drive, maybe fifteen minutes of me enjoying the silence of the nature and the wind blowing through my hair. Daryl pulled up a dirt road and it ended with a small daycare up ahead, I had to wonder why a daycare was off the beaten path in the woods like this, but if there was formula here I really couldn't care less. He parked the bike beside the building before the both of us jumped off and had our bows at the ready.

Daryl nodded to a window that was beside us, and used his elbow to crack it so we could crawl through. Daryl climbed in first and helped me over the short ledge, careful not to cut myself on the broken glass. We were in a room with plenty of toys, many appeared to be for older children and I knew there wouldn't be any formula in this room. "You look here, I'll take across the hall" I said quietly as Daryl was walking towards a closet across the room. "Stay alert" He mumbled to me with a nod, and his eyes followed me until I turned away and walked out of the open doorway.

There were probably four or five doors across the hall from the one I was currently standing in, and chose the one directly across the hall to start scavenging through. I was on high alert with every step I took, knowing that behind every corner there could be a threat....walker and human. I closed the door behind me and quickly scanned the room, immediately relaxing seeing no obvious threats. The room had a few cribs and rockers across one wall, and a play area on the opposite side.

There were a bunch of cabinets directly to my left, and i hoped there was something for Judith inside. I opened up a few seeing only some blankets and bottles but I grabbed them and stuck them in my bag anyway. The next cabinet had me grinning to myself as I saw four unopened cans of formula, that would be enough for at least two months for Judith. I quickly filled my bag with the baby food and slipped my bag over my shoulder and grabbed my bow off of the ground where I dropped it.

I turned around and gasped when someone was standing behind me, but calmed down seeing it was only Daryl. "I didn't even hear you come in" I said softly looking up at a smirking Daryl. "That was the point" He mumbled before coming closer to me, causing me to walk backwards into the wall. I sighed as Daryl softly ran his hand down my left cheek with his hand, and gently leaned into his touch. Daryl's other hand rested on the wall beside my head before I found his forehead resting against my own.

I could feel Daryl's hot breath blowing across my face, and I could feel my heart beating quicker at his closeness. It shocked me how much affect this man had on me, how he could send shivers down my spine with one single touch. The way I could read him, and know how much he cared even without him needing to say so. I could feel myself falling hard for Daryl Dixon, I just hoped he wouldn't drop me flat on my face. Daryl bent forward and gently placed his lips against mine, and I couldn't help the moan that escaped my lips.

We hadn't kissed since the day i came back from the hotel, and this kiss was so much different than that one. This one was slow, steady and sweet...unlike that time where he practically attacked my mouth. And although I very much enjoyed the fire and passion in that kiss, this one held a lingering emotion of something foreign to me....something almost like love. His lips were slightly chapped and moist against mine, and i dropped my bow on the ground to allow me to wrap my arms around his neck. His one hand still ran comforting strokes down my cheek, while the other cornered me against him and the cement wall.

"Been wanting to do that all day" He mumbled against my lips when he slowly and reluctantly pulled away. "I'm glad you did" I said before slowly opening my eyes. Daryl smirked at me before bending down and picking up my bow. He slid it gently around my shoulder and laced our fingers together and pulled me behind him and into the room we had entered before. I climbed out of the window first and waited until Daryl jumped down beside me.

The drive back to the prison wasn't long, and felt a lot shorter than the ride to the day care did for some reason. Carl opened the gate as we approached and then closed it quickly behind us, us riding slowly up to the second gate in front of the prison that was already open. I hopped off the bike and took off for the door to the prison, needing to quickly get formula to Judith before she started screaming again. I ran through one hallway, and followed the chattering voices of our group up ahead.

"Guys, were back" I called as i walked through the door, but something was off. T-Dog and Glenn both had guns pointed at someone, and it was then that I noticed there were five extra people in the cell block. "Emma look out!" Someone called over, but before I knew it someone had wrapped an arm around my neck and I felt the cold metallic barell of a gun pointed to the side of my head. "Tomas, come on man!" A short white man with a perfectly groomed beard said from my left. He was standing with two taller black men, one looked like the only person you would see in an Apocalypse that needed to go on a diet.

"You come one step farther, i'll blow this sweet things head off" The man i still hadn't seen said in my ear. I glared to myself since I couldn't see the man who was holding me, and ended up just keeping my eyes on Rick who was standing with his gun pointed in front of us. I heard footsteps behind me, two pairs echoing through the hallway adjacent to the cell block and I automatically knew it was Daryl and Carl.

"What the fuck!?" Daryl's southern voice called out behind me the second he walked through the cell block. "I'll fucking kill her if you step closer" The man, Tomas, said once again in my ear. He spun around quickly so we were now facing Daryl and Carl, both of whom had weapons pointed to Tomas. Daryl was looking at him with such fury he could have set the prison on fire, and Carl was glancing from me to his father as if asking for permission to shoot this asshole.

"What do you want?" i asked calmly, trying to turn my head to speak but Tomas kept his hold on me. "We want out cell block back" He growled in my ear.

Tomas along with the other inmates, Rick and Daryl were all shouting at one another about what to do about the situation. I closed my eyes and tried my best to remember what I was taught in situations like this at the hospital, we took numerous self defence classes at the hospital for when we dealt with crazy patients....and i took up Krav Maga on the side lines since I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I haven't had to need it until this moment.

I slowly bent my knees enough to where he didn't notice me moving, and gripped the arm that was holding my neck tight in my hand. I looked over and saw Daryl had stopped talking and was looking at me with intrigue, like he knew exactly what i was about to do. Daryl nodded his head one time to me, a slight nod not even noticeable to anyone else int he group, but his nod gave me the confidence to finish what i started.

I raised my left shoulder quickly and ducked under Tomas's arm before kicking my legs out behind his knees. Tomas groaned and fell forward, dropping his gun. Glenn ran forward and grabbed the gun quickly, tucking it into the back of his pants while Tomas and i sat beside each other on the ground. I reached over and grabbed the back of Tomas's dark curly pony tail and yanked his head upward. "You aren't getting our cell block" I growled into his ear. Tomas just laughed "Don't point a fucking gun to my head again, or I'll kill you" I said without emotion this time.

"Good luck" Tomas said, eyes glancing over to look at me. I leaned back still holding his hair, before looking over to Daryl who still had his crossbow pointed at Tomas. "Warned you" I said shrugging before nodding to Daryl. Daryl smirked before pulling the trigger and sent an arrow flying into Tomas's skull. After that, shit went nuts....I never expected the unarmed prison inmates to fight back if we killed Tomas, but they did....And it wasn't pretty.
