Chapter Thirty-Three
I could hear gun fire all around me, people shooting at walkers, and my own members shooting at the enemy. The governor's people were running through the tombs in the attempt to kill us, but they were failing miserably. I stood frozen staring down at the flash bang in my hand, before glancing up to see several strangers running in my direction. I pulled the trigger and sent the flash bang flying in their direction, smoke filling up the tombs quickly. I felt a hand on my arm and was suddenly yanked in the opposite direction, but when I saw it was Daryl I yanked my arm roughly away from him and sprinted ahead.
I never thought I would feel pain like this before, and I've been stabbed and shot a few times. I have been on the brink of death too many times to count, and yet none of that was as painful as this. I have no idea why Daryl said the things he said to me, and quite frankly I didn't need to know. Daryl obviously was using me for something, was lonely and told me he loved me in a time of weakness. He lied about everything he ever said to me. About how we were family, and he loved me. About how we never would let me go and would do anything to protect me, everything we had was a lie.
Last night when he said those cruel things to me, I broke down and ended up passing out on the concrete pavement. Glenn found me coming off of watch and carried me inside, keeping me in his cell with Maggie. I think he heard the whole conversation between Daryl and I, he was only a few feet away in the guard tower. Glenn and I were really close, and he was now giving Daryl the cold shoulder for what he did to me, Maggie as well. But now was no the time to dwell on hateful words that were said, we were currently at war. And regardless of what Daryl did, I was still going to protect him with every breath inside my body. He may not love me, never loved me, but I still love him.
I turned around and started firing shots behind me, hitting several Woodbury soldiers, barely seeing some of them all to the ground through the smoke. "Come on Emma!" Rick yelled, grabbing me and pulling me down the left pathway. I tucked my gun into my holster and pulled out my knife, following behind Rick, Daryl and Carol who were running in front of me. Like our plan, when we got farther ahead I pulled open a door, letting dozens of walkers pour through into the tombs. They smelled the fresh blood of the Woodbury soldiers and headed in their direction.
I heard their screams and shook my head before following after my group. Thye deserved this, they brought war to our home.
We pushed our way through to the back part of the prison, and hid around a wall to wait for them to leave. They did exactly like we thought they would, and ran for the gates with Glenn and Maggie shooting at them from above. People were screaming and running around frantically, but finally they all piled into a couple of their trucks and they left. "I cant believe we did it!" Carol exclaimed with a smile on her face. We all walked back into the courtyard and waited for everyone else. Everyone had a smile on their face, but I just stared down to the ground. I was truly glad we had run them out of our home, but I was having a hard time feeling much with the man who broke my heart standing only feet away.
Daryl looked the same as always, awkward and silent. He didnt even look too upset over the things he said to me. He must have truly meant them then. I took a deep breath and forced away the tears that were brimming in my eyes. I wiped them away before pushing past everyone and back into the cell block, but not before grabbing my bag and swinging it onto my back. I shoved my bag onto the bottom bunk in Michonne's cell, she wouldent mind sharing with me now. I plopped down on the bed and covered my head with the backs of my arms.
I was trying hard not to break down, trying my hardest to just do what Daryl said and forget about him but I couldent. I just loved him too much. Silent sobs erupted in my body and tears were staining my cheeks. I clutched my stomach and rolled over to face the wall, in hopes that nobody would witness this breakdown of mine. I never thought losing him would hurt this much, it felt like my heart was trying to rip itself from my chest. I felt warmth on my back that frightened me, but turned to see it was Michonne crouching down beside my bed.
"What is it?" She asked softly as she sat on the open edge of the bed. I just dropped my eyes to my hands and shook my head. Michonne was never one to talk a lot, but we were really close so im sure me crying was confusing for her. I never cried, except when I got shot and that was only because I couldn't breath. I scooted backwards so she could sit more comfortably on the bed, and leaned my back against the bed railing. We didn't speak for a while, I just silently cried and she gave me the company I needed.
I could hear the echoing sounds of the group coming back inside, I could hear them making their way into cells and unpacking their things in the cells around us. I heard loud boots coming closer to our cell, and the breath hitched in my throat when Daryl stood in the entrance awkwardly looking between Michonne and I. "Uh, Michonne were heading back to Woodbury to finish this" Daryl mumbled after coughing awkwardly a few times. I glared at him, and I knew Michonne could sense then change in us. "Right, come on Emma" Michonne told him before getting up and dragging me behind her.
"Um, I think Emma should stay here" Daryl said blocking the doorway from either of us leaving. "We need Emma's bow, it's quieter" Michonne said grabbing her sword she set on the ground and putting in on her shoulder. "We'll be fine, got my crossbow and your'e sword" Daryl said not looking at me once, but keeping eye contact with Michonne.
"We need all the man power we can spare" Michonne argued back. "She's got one of the best shots here" Michonne added. Daryl grunted before opening his mouth to argue back, but I cut him off by shoving him forcefully out of the cell. He stumbled backwards and almost fell to the ground by the impact. "Shut up Dixon, I'm going and I swear to go Ill kill whoever tries to stop me" I growled at him, giving him the most hateful glare I could muster. I swung my bow and quiver onto my shoulder before quickly walking outside.
Rick and Glenn were already waiting in the car, I hopped in the back quickly and slammed the door. "Fuck him Emma" Glenn said turning around slightly since he knew what happened. "What's happening?" Rick asked from the drivers seat. "I would like to know that myself" Michonne said getting in beside me. I looked out the window and could see Daryl and his motorcycle leading the way out the gate Carl was currently opening. "Daryl Dixon is a fucking liar that's what it is happening." I sneered to them, keeping my stoic glance at the passing scenery.
Nobody else in the car spoke, not for a while. Not until we came across the vehicles of the Woodbury army. "Holy shit" I mumbled when we got out of the car. Every single Woodbury soldier was either dead, turned, or being feasted upon. Quite frankly it was a pretty gruesome scene, and I had some idea of what happened seeing all the bullet holes. We took down the many walkers that were lingering, or the people who clearly had just turned and we started to walk the perimeter. "I told you to stay" I heard someone behind me when I was checking one of the bodies who wasn't as bloody. No pulse.
I growled turning around to see Daryl standing there fiddling with the strap of his crossbow. I scoffed and took a step closer to him. "Are you fucking kidding me right now?" I said quietly not wanting to bring us any unwanted attention. Daryl's head snapped up and his eyes met mine when he heard my vocie. Daryl furrowed his head as if he had no idea why I was mad, this man had some nerve. "You told me to stay away from you, yet here you stand" I said motioning to him, and pulling my bow off my back for protection.
"Em's I-" But I cut Daryl off with a slap across the face, a slap so loud is caused Michonne and the others to come running. "Don't you ever speak to me again Dixon, You lost your right to speak to me last night"
Daryl seemed unfazed by my slap, but kept his face turned in the direction the force had turned him. I took a step closer to where I was only inches from him. "How did it feel Daryl, to use me for my body and then treat me like one of these walkers walking around" I said dangerously soft. Daryl was quick to take one more step closer, glaring right back. "You know it ain't like that" He whispered with a shake of his head. "Because I love you, Ill protect you always. But just know, your words hurt me more than any bullet ever did" I said feeling a single tear run down my face. Daryl reached out to touch me, I just took a step back and stomped to what we were here to do.
"Let's get this fucking done!" i shouted back at the group who was still standing by our car. Feeling anger pulsing through me, I kicked over a walker who was feeding on some dead Woodbury member.I bent down closer to it and sneered at it's atrocious greedy face. I pulled my knife off my hip and jammed it through it's skull over and over again. Blood splattered over my face, but I didn't care. The fight with Daryl just made me in the mood to kill something. I heard a thump beside me in a truck and looked up to see a woman, an alive woman looking down at me through the truck window.
I glared and jumped up yanking the door open, but just when I was about to pull her down and kill her like I intended with anyone I found, I realized that I knew her. "Karen?!?" I asked looking over at the woman with curly brown hair and matching eyes. She was taller than me, and was looking down at my small frame breathing heavily. "Emma!" She exclaimed and tossed her arms around my shoulders. I smiled having someone here from my past.
"You know her?" I heard Rick ask from behind me, I just nodded my head against Karen's shoulder and hugged her tighter. We pulled apart and I could see tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, just like mine. "Karen and I were roommates, she was also a nurse at my hospital" I told them, standing close to my old friend. "I wasn't working when shit hit the fan, I was in Atlanta visiting my son in college" She told the group. Rick looked hesitant to be talking to someone who was just shooting at us, but I think looking around at the horrific scene around us he knew she didn't want this.
"Justin?" I asked her. Justin was her eighteen year old son who went to school in Atlanta. He was a scrawny kid with asthma, I only met him a couple times over holiday. Karen looked at me sadly and shook her head. I frowned and wrapped my arms around her, squeezing her tightly. She hugged me back before pulling apart. "The governor slaughtered everyone, we have to get back to Woodbury" She told us. All of us nodding knowing that was needed, "Alright come with us" Rick told Karen. Karen nodded and then followed us to our car, with Daryl jumping on his motorcycle.
I didn't know what was at Woodbury, but I had this feeling that everything was about to change....
