Chapter Thirty-Seven

It was times like these that I was glad I carried a gun wherever I went. I quickly checked to make sure I had a full magazine, before popping it back into my pistol and taking aim. I shot Patrick in the head, giving him a sad look as I ran past him. Lizzie and Micka were crying off to the side, as they watched their father fight off two walkers without a gun. I quickly shot the two walkers before shoving the two girls into a cell and pulling the gate shut. "Emma!" I heard someone yell out, and i turned to see Rick, Glenn and Daryl run through into the cell block.

"Behind you!" i shouted at them, Rick turned around and quickly stabbed a walker that sneaked up behind them. Things were hectic, it was hard to keep track of everyone who had been bitten and the ones that were walkers. Everyone had blood on them, so figuring out where the walkers were was proving troublesome. Everyone was in a panic, and you had to protect each other, while identifying walkers at the same time, it wasn't pretty. I shot down one more walker before running over to where Rick and the other were down the cell block.

A walker came up to my right and tackled me into the staircase, I yelled out in pain before using all my strength to hold the walker off of me. But he was a big one, I recognized him as Larry, a man who we found living in the lumber yard a couple weeks ago. He was big and brawny and resembled a large bear in my eyes. I groaned as he snapped his jaw at me, I took in his face and frowned. He had blood streaming from his eyeballs, and other than his eyes he looked generally alright. Something weird was going on, Patrick looked exactly like this when I saw him earlier.

The walker was pulled off of me and Daryl was there before plunging his knife into his skull. "You alright?" he asked in a panic. I caught my breath and nodded my head before he wrapped an arm around my waist. I looked around to see we had taken care of all the walkers, and anyone who wasn't bitten of dead had locked themselves in the cells. "Something is wrong Daryl" I whispered to him as we walked slowly through the cell block towards Rick and the others. "Is it the baby?" He asked, pulling on my arm and stopping me from walking any farther. I shook my head, I didn't have any pain so as far as I was concerned the baby was ok. "No, look at Patrick. Look at his eyes".

"Your right Emma, something is definitely out of the ordinary" Caleb, the other doctor we had, mumbled to me. I stood with Hershel and Caleb in cell block A as we examined the bodies of the walkers. "Patrick and Larry have no bites, they had to have died from something else in the night" I said leaning down to get a closer look at him.

"Patrick said he wasn't feeling well yesterday, that was the last time I saw him" Carol said from outside the cell. I looked over at her and frowned before looking back down at Patrick.

"I don't think an autopsy works on walkers" Caleb said solemnly before standing up and sticking his stethoscope around his neck. "Whatever this is, it's obviously contagious" I said shaking my head and backing away out of the cell. I wrapped my shirt around my nose and mouth before heading outside of the cell block, instead of heading back to cell block C where I was living, I just headed outside into the fresh air. If I was right and it really was contagious then I could be infected right now.

I felt the warm tears run down my face as I thought to all of the people we just lost in cell block A. Fifteen to be exact. We lost a couple kids, plenty of elderly who were just too slow to fight back. Patrick and Larry were the two who were sick and started attacking everyone. This life doesn't ever get easier, it never gets easier to watch people die right in front of you regardless if you knew them very well or not. I would have loved to say I was numb to seeing the gruesome truth that was this life, but I wasn't. And somehow it was nice to know I was still human, that this life hadn't made me lose a sense of who I was.

I heard thumping footsteps behind me, echoing around the courtyard. I knew it was Daryl just by the sound of his boots, if Daryl wasn't in the woods he rarely tried to contain his presence. Quickly enough I felt his arm around snake around my waist and pull me into his side. "You alright?" He asked quietly into my hair as he kissed me softly on my temple. I nodded slowly before leaning towards him and burying my face into his chest. Daryl didn't say anything for a while, and i just stood there for a few minutes enjoying the warmth his large hands were giving on my back.

"What if we get sick too Daryl?" I asked pulling out of his arms and walking closer to the fence to see all the walkers who were accumulating on the fence. "We cant think like that Em's" I heard him say as he followed me, linking his hands through the chain link fence and joined me in watching the monsters outside of our reach. "If I get sick, and turn out like Patrick. I need you to be the one to put me down" I whispered, dropping me head not even wanting to think that horrendous thought.

Daryl placed his hand under my chin and forced me to look into his hard blue eyes. Daryl shook his head and looked like he wanted to argue back with me, but we both knew the chance of me turning was there, especially now that I was pregnant. "We cant deny that there's the chance Daryl. I was in there longer than anyone, I could easily get sick" I said looking up into his sad eyes. All Daryl could do was reach down as kiss my lips tenderly.

"I would never leave you as one of those monsters babe, but even the thought of the chance tears me apart" Daryl told me, his hands lingering on the side of my face. His thumbs gently brushing away my tears as they fall. "I already love that baby of ours so much, that I cant even think of losing them" He whispered before dipping down and placing his lips against mine gently. I melted into his touch and wrapped my arms tightly around his waist.

"I love you Daryl" I said as we pulled apart and rested our foreheads together.

"I love you Emma. If you get sick, we will figure something out" Daryl said.

I nodded at him, desperately wanting to believe him when he would tell me everything would be ok and we would figure it out. But I had this awful feeling in my stomach that something was wrong with me, and it had nothing to do with the baby.
