Chapter Thirty.
I was beginning to really hate sleep, every time my eyes closed I felt like I missed everything big that happened. The last time this happened, Daryl left to find Maggie and Glenn and he didn't come back for some time. This time, he left again but for different reasons. Rick and the governor were sitting down to "discuss" a plan for everything that was going on, I personally didn't think they would accomplish anything at all. I missed Andrea stopping by, and was sad at first realizing I didn't get to see her. But she was alive and that was all the mattered, too bad she was shacking up with out enemy.
I even missed Rick and Michonne bringing back an arsenal of weapons and ammo for us, a lot can happen when you sleep for a couple days. But the sleep did my body good, I was feeling better than I have in a very long time. I felt if something happened I could easily defend the group like I always did, no stab wound or gun shot hole would stop me from keeping my family safe....from keeping Daryl safe. The group just felt on edge today, everyone knowing that things would change when Rick came back with whatever terms him and the Governor came to.
I stood beside Maggie in the dining area, both of us loading magazines for the pistols. My fingers were starting to hurt I had loaded so many, but that was a good thing seeing as we had plenty of ammo if we needed it. Glenn had just walked in from placing ammo around the outside of the prison just in case, and he sneered at Merle who was sitting at a chair playing with his metallic hand. "We should pack up some of this, take it to the Governor" Merle said standing up and coming to grab some of the ammo that was laying in front of us. I rolled my eyes and went back to what I was doing, I didn't have the patience to deal with Merle right now.
"We told Daryl, and Rick we would stay here" Michonne said, making extra sure to put emphasis on Daryl's name knowing it would probably affect Merle. Merle shook his head and grabbed a full magazine and placed it in his pistol. "We know where he is right now! We can end this ourselves!" He said loudly grabbing a bag on the ground and grabbed several weapons and tossing them inside. I dropped the magazine in my hand onto the table and glared at him. "Your not going anywhere" I said not taking my eyes off of him.
Merle turned quickly and glared right back at me, "And what are you going to do shorty?" Merle asked with a chuckle as he looked my up and down. "I have no problem killing a man, I probably have more blood on my hands than you" I said quietly taking a step towards the man who currently towered over me. "But because I love your brother, I wont kill you. Not today anyway" I said shrugging and yanking the bag out of his hand, tossing it back under the table where it came from. I turned around to finish what i was doing when i heard Merle start laughing again.
"You sure got some attitude on you girl" Merle said taking the seat on the bench beside me. I glanced at him before grabbing an empty magazine to load with ammo. I tried my hardest to ignore the eldest Dixon who sat next to me, but i could feel his eyes boring into the side of my head. "Think maybe you can do something, I don't know helpful maybe?" i asked sarcastically putting my magazine down to place my hand on my hip. Merle just smirked at me before shaking his head, "Nah I'm fine where I am" Merle said, once again fiddling with his metallic arm.
"You should really clean that thing" I told him noticing the gross looking bandages when he took off the metallic arm off the spot where his hand should be. The once white medical bandages were disgusting looking, like they hadn't been changed in weeks. "What are you? A doctor?" He asked with a snort as he placed the metal piece back on his arm. I rolled me eyes at him, "Actually I am" i said calmly before walking away to help Michonne who was sorting a pile of ammo on a separate table.
"I swear, if it wasn't for Daryl I might steal your sword and Merle just might find the end of it" i said glaring across the area at Merle who was now taunting Glenn and Maggie about something.
"I just might let you" Michonne said with a chuckle. I smiled over at her and continued to help her separate some more ammo. We made small talk about random things before i heard the shouting of Merle and Glenn. I snapped my head up and saw Merle had Glenn in a headlock, his knife held to his neck. Maggie was desperately trying to get Merle off of him, punching continuously at his back. I groaned before slamming the box of ammo in my hand down on the table and running over to help them. Merle's metal arm wasn't attached the tightest to the rest of his arm, I took notice seeing he took it off and on so easily.
I stuck my arm in between Merle's knife and Glenn's neck before quickly sliding the metal arm off of Merle's arm. Glenn gasped for air and fell backwards, Maggie catching him before he hit the table that was behind the two of them. Merle glared at me with shock that I just stole the thing he had been using as a weapon, I now had it in one of my hands. "You little bitch!" Merle growled before lunging towards me trying to get his weapon. He grabbed my arm tightly, but I just took my free hand and jabbed his nub with my fingernail, he cried out in pain.
"You touch me again, I wont hesitate to kill you next time" I said glaring at him, He glared right back at me. I looked him up and down, from his dirty boots to his ripped pants and all the way up to his blue eyes that looked way too much like Daryl's. I glared one more time before tossing his weapon on the ground and pushing my way through the group members, and outside into the fresh air.
I loved Daryl, but his brother was a completely different story. Since the day they came back, the day we allowed Merle to become a member of our group he had been nothing but trouble. He was obnoxious and pushy and was driving everyone in the prison crazy. Glenn had a personal vendetta against him, as Merle was the one who beat him senseless and threw a walker against him when he couldn't fight back. I was trying my hardest to tolerate him, but sometimes it was just a bit too much. I just had to hope that if the group eventually wanted Merle gone, that Daryl wouldn't go with him a second time.
I walked across the courtyard and noticed the sun was setting slowly across the woods, Daryl and the others should be back really soon. I took a seat on one of the sets of bleachers and just leaned my head back, enjoying the last bit of warmth from the day to warm my face. I closed my eyes and sighed trying to block out the groaning of the walkers that lined the fences. The roar of a motorcycle was what made my eyes open wide and jump off the bench and run over to the gate. Daryl's bike followed by the green Hyundai came driving quickly up the dirt path.
When they were closer I opened our one remaining gate, allowing them to drive through and quickly placed it back before the walkers in the field decided to stumble through. Daryl's bike was just shutting off when I walked over to him, Rick and Hershel. Hershel smiled at me before hobbling into the prison on his crutches. Rick placed his hand on my shoulder before wandering off somewhere in the courtyard that I didn't see, Rick still often had this tendency to wander from time to time, but not as bad as he did before. Often times he would walk around in the tombs that were filled with walkers and not come back for hours at a time, after all these months that passed since Lori, I still knew he was grieving her significantly. He just wasn't as lost and crazy as he was last time.
I felt a warmth on my shoulder and looked down to see Daryl's dirty fingernails gripping onto my shoulder. I turned around slowly and smiled when I saw him, he had been gone all day and I honestly missed him not being here with me. Daryl gave me a small smile before wrapping his arm around my shoulder and kissing the side of my head. "Good day?" He asked as we walked slowly to the cell block. I shrugged "Just trying not to kill your brother" I said with a chuckle. Daryl gave me a hearty laugh and squeezed my shoulder tightly. "You?" i asked as we walked through the door to the cell block. "Not sure" He said with a shrug and held the door open so i could walk through first.
Later on in the day, we all stood in the cell block waiting to hear what went down with Rick and the governor. Daryl stood beside me, one hand holding the strap of his crossbow the other discreetly wrapped around my waist holding me to him tightly. I could feel the tension of everyone waiting to hear what Rick had to say, Rick paced back and forth in front of the staircase. "So I met this governor" Rick finally said, breaking the uncomfortable silence that loomed over our heads. "Just the two of you?" Merle asked. Merle was standing across the way from us, looking back and forth between Rick and i.
Rick nodded and Merle scoffed in response, stomping over to Daryl and I. "I told you we should have gone earlier, we could have killed him when we had the chance." Merle told me glaring down at my tiny frame. I glared right back. Daryl let go of his crossbow and placed a hand on Merle's chest pushing him gently away from me. "Stop" Daryl told him and Merle glared before backing down and walking across the cell block.
I tuned out a lot of stuff, but once Rick said "Were going to war" I shifted all of my attention to him. He stopped talking, looked around at us from face to face as if studying who we all were. he dropped his head before walking out of the cell block, and Hershel followed not too far after. I felt Daryl's arm tighten around my waist and he looked down at me with glum eyes. My eyes mirrored his as we realized that we were going to war with an entire town of people and we could potentially lose each other. Daryl bent down and rested his forehead against mine, his hot breath fanning across my face.
"I'm going to keep you safe, no matter what" He whispered to me. We both realized the other members of the group were still around us but I don't think he cared at the moment, it was no secret the two of us were together now. "I know you will" I told him, reaching up and pushing some of his messy hair out of his face. He sighed before reaching down at capturing my lips with his in a quick and loving kiss. When we pulled apart I ran my thumb gently over his bottom lip and kissing him one more time. He smiled at me before squeezing my hand and walking over to talk to his brother. I felt terrified at what would happen soon, I might lose all of these people I loved and cared for, with the exception of Merle. But even I was human enough to say i didn't want to lose him either.
