Chapter Ten.
So Randomness from my weekend, I was in Atlanta and felt like Rick Grimes walking into the apocolypse haha way too many people haha but i did see a bunch of places that were in like episodes 1-3 of season one, tried to get a picture while we were driving away on the road Rick enters Atlanta but it was raining :-( It was neat though..
I was glad Daryl brought a flashlight with him, it was very dark out tonight since the moon was covered by clouds. He held his crossbow in one hand with ease, while flashing light into the Forest with the other....I had my bow ready to shoot and had my eyes and ears peeled for predatory beings that lived in the woods. I wasn't even sure why Daryl invited me along for this "hunt" We couldn't see any game even if there was any, and Daryl hasn't said a word to me since telling me to be quiet when I tripped over a branch about a mile back.
I trusted Daryl to not get us lost, and he knew the woods better than anyone, even better than me and I lived in them for months. "Thanks for that thing with Shane back there" I said softly finally breaking our hour long silence. He grunted a response while flashing his light behind me checking for enemies. He nodded once before turning back around and continuing in the other direction. I sighed before slowly following behind him.
I figured Daryl would have been silent for the rest of the way, but he shocked me by asking me a question... " Was it terrible...being all alone for that long?" he asked, slowing down his pace so he could walk along side me. I looked over to see him looking at me with intrigue before facing back to the forest. "Yeah it sucked, plenty of times I thought about just running into a horde of walkers to just end it all....but I guess in the end that felt too much like giving up" I said shrugging, loosening the string on my bow only slightly, as I realized I had been clenching it for a while.
"I normally like bein alone, but Iv'e gotten used to being with a group after all this time" he said, his eyes shifting from me, to the path ahead of us. I could picture Daryl being the guy to survive this all by himself, with no one by his side, he was one of the toughest men I had ever met....and also the first survivor I had seen since the outbreak. Daryl seemed to subconsciously be walking closer and closer to me with every step he took, and I cant say that I minded it too much. His arm would brush mine slightly ever now and again making me exceptionally hot under the cold of night.
"What about your brother?" i asked hesitantly, as Merle seemed like a touchy subject with him. He looked skeptical and moved slightly away from me before answering. "My brother was a jackass but he was blood" He said "I miss him" He all but whispered, and stopped walking staring at a tree behind me. I reached out and grabbed his hand, he tried jerking away but I just held it firmly with my own, it was easy since he had put his flashlight in the opposite hand. "I know you do" I whispered, staring up into his baby blue eyes.
He nodded and gently squeezed my hand before letting it fall down by my side. I sighed before going to continue our walk, but Daryl had other ideas and in the blink of an eye had be pinned against a pine tree. I gasped as my back hit the bark hard, but his large hand was covering my mouth keeping me from making a sound. My eyes were wide as I looked up at him, his eyes were darting from me to a section of the forest a bit a ways. I glanced over to see about five walkers stumbling around looking for food. It was dangerous since it was so dark out to try and take them on by ourselves. Our weapons were quiet, but who knew if there were more following along behind them.
The walkers seemed oblivious that we were standing not too far away from them, and were groaning... and I could hear their feet shuffling over the fallen leaves of Autumn. Daryl kept his eyes on me, and i could feel his hot breath on my face as our noses were only fingertips away from one another. He removed his hand from my mouth and placed it gently against my cheek before placing it on my hip. My skin was burning under his touch, and i don't know what was happening to me.
Daryl kept his eyes on mine the entire time we waited for the walkers to pass by, and it felt like hours of my temperature rising before he let me go. He handed me my bow that had fallen on the ground in the process of him pushing against the tree, I took it gently and followed him back to camp, staying a few feet behind him at all times. The sun was rising by the time we made it back to our tent, and both of us stepped in silently, took off our gear and fell asleep without mentioning what happened in the woods......
The next morning the camp seemed on edge, everyone probably wondering about the mysterious boy in the barn. Rick told Daryl and I he wanted more information on the group he belonged to before making any further decisions. Dale was going for each person in the group trying to get someone to stand up beside him and save this boys life, and so far I think I was the only one that was, except for maybe Glenn as well...
"You ready?" Daryl asked me once I finished my breakfast of stew made from squirrel that Carol had fixed up the previous night. Daryl and I were supposed to be the two to get information out of Randall....He felt Shane didn't have the patience to just talk with the guy, and I guess no one else in the group wanted the job...leaving me and Daryl the two outcasts with bows to get the job done. I nodded and followed him silently to the barn where Randall was being held.
"Let me do the talking" He said before putting in the lock combination and stepping inside, not even letting me argue with him. I quickly followed behind him and shut the door gently....Randall was sitting against the red barn wall with his hands cuffed behind his back, his eyes blinded by a rag that was tied around his eyes.
When Randall heard us enter the barn he started shifting uncomfortably and jerking his head trying to figure out what was going on around him since he couldn't see. I stood off to the side while watching Daryl pace in front of Randall, who looked like he was about to pee himself out of fear. Daryl reached forward and ripped off the blindfold from Randall's face, and crouching down in front of him.
Randall saw Daryl's sneering face and tried shuffling backwards, but ended up just pushing his back into the wall even more. "Where's your group?" Daryl asked twiddling with his hunting knife between his fingers. Randall looked confused before shaking his head frantically and pulling his legs closer to his body. "I said where's your group!?!" Daryl shouted, stabbing his knife into the ground between Randall's legs. "I don't know!" he cried out before Daryl started hitting him in the face repeatedly. I winced myself as I watched Randall spit blood out onto the ground beside him when Daryl landed his final punch.
"We never stayed anywhere longer than a night" Randall said softly, still panting from the beating he received. Daryl went to hit him again but stopped when Randall opened his mouth to speak again, "Im telling the truth, those guys took me in when I had nothing....they were just like you guys, had men, kids....women" He looked to me when he said that, and I averted my eyes to the floor.
"You don't look at her! You hear me!" Daryl yelled punching Randall once more. Randall did something I didn't expect him to, he laughed...he laughed right in Daryl's face making my eyes go wide. "She ya girl or something?" Randall asked, eyeing me from afar. I could see Daryl's breathing pick up, and he cracked his neck along with his knuckles. "Reminds me of this night we found this camp....had these real pretty girls, just like her" Randall said nodding in my direction. "We had our fun with them" Randall said smirking.
My own breathing faltered when I heard him say that....without a second thought I unsheathed my knife form my thigh and stepped towards the pair of them. Daryl looked like he was contemplating killing this guy, and was clutching his own knife so tightly his knuckles were turning white. Randall was showing too many different emotions it was hard to pin point any exact one....but his eyes showed fear behind the cocky smirk across his lips.
Daryl hadn't seen me approach yet, but he was sure aware of my appearance when I shoved my knife right into Randall's leg. Randall cried out in pain, but I only shoved my knife deeper into calf, the same spot I had performed surgery on the day before. "You will never touch another woman again" I sneered into his face, ripping out the knife and plunging it between his legs, kicking him over to let him bleed out on his own. Randall's screams attracted the attention of the rest of the group, but I wouldn't let a person like this around the camp....not around Carol who was beaten already by her husband...not around Carl who was the one kid in camp now....I couldn't let him touch another woman the way he touched the girls he found in that camp..
I felt tears fall down my face as I watched the pain behind Randall's eyes. "Your not a boy...your a monster just like the ones walking around outside" I whispered to him, wiped my tears and ripped my knife out of his groin. The gasps of the group caught me attention as they watched Randall squirm on the ground in pain. "Glad someone had the balls to do it" I heard Shane say, a smile completely evident by the tone of his voice.
Randall's cries disappeared as the light left his eyes, but the blood pouring from his body never stopped. I wrapped my arms around my torso and fell to the ground as i realized the repercussions of what I had just done....I know I needed to protect the family I have grown to love, even if they weren't blood. This guy was dangerous, I could see that in his eyes when he looked to me reliving his sick memories.
I heard groans all of a sudden, and looked up to see Randall had reanimated as a walker and was trying to lunge at me, but he never made it as Daryl plunged his knife into his skull. When I saw Randall fall back to the ground for the final time I put my head in my hands and cried softly to myself. I felt a hand on my shoulder and someone whisper my name, but I couldn't comprehend anything that was going on around me other that the death that layed only inches away by my hand.
I never thought I would be the person to actually kill someone even after the world went to hell, especially since I was defending this guy the day before. I felt my body being lifted in the air, and when my head fell backwards i could see it was Daryl who had wrapped his arms around me and was carrying me back to camp. I took in the smell of dirt and grass that was radiating from his toned body and let my head fall to his shoulder. "Its ok Emma" He whispered to me, before I fell asleep.....
