{8} The Maid
***
Emma and I were in our new shared apartment with Mary-Margaret, who, thankfully, let us stay here. We were unpacking our belongings which wasn't actually a lot. I looked over to see Mary-Margaret bringing plates of food over to us. "I'm so glad my stuff is here," Emma stated with a sigh of relief. I nodded, agreeing with her, with a smile. Emma noticed the food being handed to her and she took it with a smile, "Oh, thanks." I took my food with a smile as well and ate some of it.
Mary-Margaret looked at our stuff, "So that's all your stuff?"
"What do you mean?" Emma asked.
"Is the rest in storage?" Mary-Margaret inquired.
I shook my head, "Nope. This," I gestured to the very few boxes and bags. "Is everything we have." Mary-Margaret seemed shocked at this. We didn't exactly plan on coming to Storybrooke so it's not like we could pack up all of our stuff. But we also didn't have much stuff anyway.
"We're not sentimental," Emma told her. I was more sentimental than Emma was, but I just didn't like having to have a lot of stuff to pack around so I just don't get a lot of things. So, basically, I'm just lazy. We also moved a lot so we didn't really feel the need to get loads of stuff. It would just be hard to pack everything for when we had to move again.
Mary-Margaret and nodded, understandingly, "Well, it must make things easier when you have to move." Mary-Margaret set her food down on the table when a knock caught our attention. She looked at the door and walked over to answer it.
Standing there was Mr. Gold as Ruby and Granny called him, "Ms. Blanchard, is Ms. Swan here?"
I walked in view, "Which one?"
"Emma," He told me. I walked back over to my box and started looking through all of the stuff. Emma walked to the door, "Hi, my name is Mr. Gold," I looked over to see the two shaking hands, "We met briefly on your's and your sister's arrival."
Emma nodded, "I remember."
"Good, I have a proposition for you, Ms. Swan. I need your help. I'm looking for someone." Mr. Gold said. This just got a lot more interesting. I stopped what I was doing and walked over to watch.
"Really? Um..." Emma trailed off.
Mr. Gold gave Mary-Margaret a look and she came back to Earth, "You know what? I am going to jump in the bath." The black-haired woman walked away.
I nodded, "Uh, yeah. I'm... gonna be over here." I walked back to my place on the couch. I acted like I wasn't paying attention to their conversation, but I was listening in. When did I not? I was curious as to what direction this would take.
"I have a photo," I heard Mr. Gold say. I heard footsteps and I knew that he had walked inside, "Her name is Ashley Boyd and she's taken something quite valuable of mine."
Emma closed the door, "So why don't you just call the police?"
From the corner of my eye, I saw Mr. Gold standing near the table, "Because uh... she's a confused young woman. She's pregnant, alone, and scared. I don't want to ruin this young girl's life, but I just want my property returned."
"And what is it?" Emma questioned.
I could feel a gaze on me and I went back to acting like I'm not listening, "Well, one of the advantages of you not being the police is discretion. Let's just say it's a precious object and leave it at that."
I could see Emma fiddling with the picture in her hand, "When did you see her last?"
"Last night. That's how I got this," It was hard to see from here, but it looked like a gash. "It's so unlike her. She was quite wound up, rambling on and on about changing her life. I have not idea what got into her. Ms. Swan, please just help me find her. My only other choice is the police, and I don't think anyone wants to see that baby born in jail, now do they."
Emma crossed her arms, "No, of course not."
Mr. Gold smiled, hopefully, "So you'll help me then?"
"I will help her," Emma told him.
Mr. Gold nodded, "Grand."
Just then, the door opened and Henry came running through, "Hey Emma, Lux, I was thinking we..." I turned to look at him. He cut himself off when he saw Mr. Gold. He had his backpack swung over one shoulder and I knew that he had snuck out. I stood up and walked over to the younger boy.
Mr. Gold smiled at him, "Hey Henry, how are you?"
Henry's smile was full of confusion and nervousness, "Okay." So he felt the same thing that I did? Mr. Gold had this air around him. I said it before. It was intimidating and a bit suffocating. It was either he could feel it too or he just knew about him. I'm going to go for the second one.
"Good," Mr. Gold chuckled and he started walking to the door, "Give my regards to your mother, and um... good luck Ms. Swan." Then he made his exit, closing the door behind him. Emma and I went back over to the couch.
Henry followed us, "Do you know who that is?"
"Yeah, of course, I do," Emma replied, unpacking more stuff.
"Who?" Henry seemed confused, like he was thinking about something, "'Cause I'm still trying to figure it out." I laughed a little at the expression on his face.
"I think she meant in reality, Henry," I told him.
Henry looked at our boxes with the same look Mary-Margaret had before, "Is that all you brought?" Why was it so surprising to people? Some people just didn't like to buy a lot of stuff. We were those people. It wasn't that hard to believe, was it? I didn't think it was, but my opinion was a little bias.
"Henry, what are you doing here?" Emma inquired, setting some stuff on the table.
Henry shrugged, "My mom's gone till 5:00 I thought we could hang out."
"Aw, kid, I wish I could, but there's something I gotta do." Emma walked past him.

Emma had decided to let me help her find this Ashley girl. We were walking down the street on our way to start, but someone happened to follow us. Henry was following us down the street and he just kept begging us, "Please let me help."
Emma shook her head, "No, no it could be dangerous."
"The pregnant maid is dangerous?" Henry asked, unconvinced.
"She assaulted Mr. Gold," Emma said.
Henry smiled, "Cool." I laughed which made Emma give me a look saying, 'Stop encouraging him.' I honestly couldn't stop the laugh from escaping. The response was so sudden that I couldn't stop it. Henry was a weird kid, but I loved it. Normal was stupid. Normal was boring. Who needed normal?
"This isn't a game. She's desperate." We were just now approaching Emma's car.
"How do you know?" Henry inquired.
I crossed my arms with a small smirk, "Yes, Emma, how do you know?"
She gave me another look then she turned back to Henry, "Because I know."
"Well, then let's find her," Henry stated. Here we go again. Henry was wanting to come with us. He really had no regard for his own safety, did he? I mean, I wasn't sure if this was going to be dangerous or not. Sure, she assaulted Mr. Gold, but he was kind of old and he had a cane. I don't think he was able to move out of the way fast enough even if he wanted to.
Emma stopped trying to get in the car and she walked over to the other side to talk to him. "Oh no, no, no, no there is no 'let's'," Emma pointed at him. "You cannot come with us."
"Then I'll look for her myself." Henry's voice was full of determination.
"Then we'll find you and we'll bring you back," Emma told him.
"Then you wouldn't be helping the maid." Henry challenged her.
I looked over at my older sister, "He does have a point."
Emma looked like she was about ready to give up, "I am just trying to be responsible here."
"And I'm just trying to spend time with you and Lux." He got in the backseat of the car. He wasn't going to take 'no' for an answer. I don't get why my sister even tries to reason with him at this point. I already knew how this was going to go. It was going to go Henry's way. Even if we had told him that he couldn't come, he was going to sneak his way into the whole thing.
Emma and I shared a look, "Oh, that is really not fair." I laughed at my sister's misfortune and we both got in the car. Her on the driver's side and me on the passenger's side.
"So the maid, what's her story?" Henry asked us. Then we went on our search for Ashley.
***
The three of us stood outside of Granny's Diner. We were currently questioning Ruby about Ashley and where she would have gone. There was also a tow truck nearby putting down a beautiful red car. Emma was the first one to ask a question, "So this boyfriend of hers, you don't think he was involved in her disappearance?"
Ruby gave a customer their drink and turned to us, "Uh, that would mean that he was involved with her at all, which he isn't. He left her in the lurch right after they found out they were expecting. Hasn't spoken to her since. Like I said he's a-" She cut herself off when the car was put down harshly, "Hey, hey, hey, Billy, be careful," She ran over to him, "You almost shattered my wolf thing, Billy. It's good luck."
"I'm sorry, Ruby, but look, it's fine." He gestured to the still intact glass wolf.
Emma moved more into Ruby's view, "Um, Ruby what about her family?"
Ruby looked back at us, "Oh, um, she's got a stepmom and two stepsisters that she doesn't talk to."
Henry cut in, "Wait, stepmom, stepsisters, and she's a maid?"
"Henry." I gave him a look. He couldn't go talking about this stuff in front of people. People would think that he's crazy. Henry just smiled at me. I swear, one day, this kid is gonna end up killing me. I'm calling it right now.
Ruby crossed her arms and started to defend her friend. "Look, I don't know what you've heard, but it's wrong. Everyone thinks she's not ready to have this kid, but she's trying, taking night classes, trying to better herself, trying to get her life together. Can you understand that?"
"I think so," Emma said.
Ruby shook her head, "Then maybe you should just stay out of it. She's been through enough already."
"I've been through it, too, Ruby, and I can help her." Emma tried to convince her.
Ruby finally caved, "Then try her ex."
"Where can I find him?" Emma questioned.
"He lives with his dad." She had a look on her face that made me want to laugh. Looks like we're going to find this ex of Ashley's. I'm just hoping that we'll be able to find her soon. I'm really tired and I want to take a nap. Hopefully, this nap won't lead me to another dangerous place in space.
