The Tracks
Cypress's feet followed clumsily to where Ethan was pulling him, they were both barefoot, and the pointy asphalt stabbed the bottom of their feet. Ethan spent most of his free time outdoors, so he was used to it, Cypress however, wasn't.
"E- Ethan! I think I'm hurt!" Cypress whimpered, and Ethan stopped at the grass, which separated the road from the train. Ethan turned around and pulled Cypress back when he tried to run away.
"No! Cy we're talking about what you just did-"
"I don't wanna be here!" Cypress pulled again, but Ethan- being a soccer player and surfer, had great core strength. He held the dark haired boys wrist tightly and refused to let him run off.
"Cypress-"
"I don't like it here! I don't like the tracks!" Cypress pulled again, but his feet slipped out in front of him and he fell on his butt, and Ethan stumbled forward.
"Can you just let me talk to you?! The train isn't coming any time soon!" Ethan yelled and felt a scrape on his knee start to bleed, "fuck man..."
"I said something bad! I wasn't thinking okay?! Now let me go!" Cypress grabbed a rock and hit both their hands with it, he needed to get out of here. Every second grew more more panic in Cypress.
"OW FUCK!" Ethan pulled his hand away and held it, "you fucking serious?!"
"I'm sorry- I- I'm sorry...." Cypress held his own hand and felt the blood start to drip down his wrist. He looked up when he heard something- or someone move some bushes around.
"Boys... it supposed to be quiet 'round here..."
Ethan looked over at the voice, and he felt his body lock up.
This... isn't human...
Cypress was trembling, staring at the man in front of them in horror.
What happened to you...
The man's face seemed missing in areas, or melted off. His nose was gone, leaving a hole in the center on his face. He had no lips... only gums and teeth. One of his arms was gone, he wore no shirt, there was a sunken area of skin on the right side of his torso.
"It alright boys... I ain't no monster... ain't someone to be spendin' my mind on that..."
Ethan and Cypress stared at him, wide eyed and mouth open. The man laughed, and stepped on the tracks, but didn't get off.
"You a young man, go back to lovin' and causin' trouble... don't sit here and waste your time..."
Ethan swallowed, and quietly asked his name.
"My name Diego, but I got a new name now, Candle Face. Ha! Tell the police my name Candle Face, they'll find me faster that way." He laughed, but there was no smile, there was nothing to work for a smile.
Cypress just stared, but now he was staring at the two lights in the distance, he couldn't speak- his throat was burning from the dryness, his mind was vacant, his chest was pounding.
"My wife call me it, my daughter call me it, the baby don't say nothin' but it sure does wail when he get a good ol' look at this!" Diego laughed then raised his one arm in the air, "I scare my own damn self when I look in the mirror! I cant even see out my right eye! Don't got one to use!"
The train drew closer, Cypress looked over at Ethan who was staring at Diego still. Ethan was petrified by this man, mostly because he knew what was happening. This man was going to kill himself, this man had no motivation to live, sometime in his life all- or the last ounce of his will to live ran away from him.
"You... you don't have to..." Ethan couldn't get another word out, now he could hear the train coming, now he could feel the ground shake.
Cypress slowly looked back at the man, who looked right back into his eyes.
"Boy, don't waste your time fightin', that's just the devil toyin' with ya..."
The train didn't stop for Diego, it didn't stop so the two teenagers could look away or run. It continued to pass by them, and go over Diego. Eventually, the entire train passed by them, leaving the remains of Diego that didn't get pulled away.
Ethan closed his eyes tightly and started to cry, now that there was nothing but a pile and scatter of Diego, it hit Ethan that this man just died. He knew very well in the moments leading up to now that it was a suicide, but Ethan couldn't get up, he could hardly talk, barely even think. Now he could, when there was nothing else to do.
Cypress stared at the grisly scene, it was dark, but you could see the shapes, and the glistening moisture.
What happened to you...
"Cy... Cy we should call the police right? Th- that's what you do?" Ethan looked at Cypress, who continued to stare at the gore in front of them.
"Cy please just say something! Stop looking at it please!" Ethan shook him, and immediately screamed in pain when he used his hand.
"Do you think his Wife... and his daughter... and his baby..." Cypress slowly turned to Ethan, tears falling down his face, "do you think they'll miss him... even though they were scared of him...?"
"Cypress! Why are you saying this?! Let's just go I- I don't want to deal with this!" Ethan got up and held his hand, "I think you broke my fucking hand!" He cried again.
"I..." Cypress looked back at Diego and started crying even harder, "I feel so bad... he wanted it quiet..." Cypress got up and stumbled back a little, "he wanted it quiet, and we..."
"CYPRESS LETS JUST GO!" Ethan grabbed Cypress with his good hand and dragged him to the parking lot, he looked over at the pool and saw Evelyn and Abigail were gone, Abigail's car was gone too.
"Ethan..."
Ethan stopped and turned when he heard Cypress call his name. He knew that this was probably fucking him up pretty bad, since both of his parents died gruesomely in a car crash. It wasn't too far off from being hit by a train.
Cypress looked at Ethan in the eyes, tears streaming down his cheeks and his teeth chattering from shaking so much.
"Cy... Cy look it's okay... it's not our fault this isn't-"
"But he wanted it quiet, he couldn't even get what he wanted in the last second... because I fucked up earlier..." Cypress started sobbing, "I r-ruined his last moments..."
"No- no don't get into the mindset Cypress." Ethan held his shoulder, "please... please that's not what you need. That's not what you deserve, none of this is your fault." Ethan looked at his hand now that his car headlights were on, it wasn't broken actually, it was just cut and bruised.
"I'm sorry..." Cypress held up his own hand, which was much worse. There was a giant, deep gash on the top of his hand where you could see that one of the bones was broken.
"Holy shit... Cy I'm gonna take you to the hospital. Get in the car- fuck." Ethan sighed and opened the passenger door for Cy, who slowly got in. It started to rain and Ethan ran to the drivers seat and closed the door after going in.
"Ethan... I can't get it out of my head..." Cypress leaned his head back against the headrest and cried. Ethan turned off the radio when he realized it was on and drove out of the parking lot.
"Cypress, people have been using that train to end their lives for a long time... I know what we saw was awful but- it happens. I wish I could save people who are in that position, I wish so much I could've saved him like you do but- it's... it's just not how it pans out..." Ethan looked over at Cypress, the traffic lights casted a red light on him, he was looking down at his hand now.
"It's just that..." Cypress started, and then the light on his face turned green, "why do things like that happen to people... people who seem nice, like hi-"
BEEEEEPPP
They both jumped, Cypress a bit more, and Ethan started driving through the light and in the direction of the ER.
"Mmm..." Cypress brought his feet up on the seat and hugged his legs, Ethan noticed that they were bleeding as well, now he felt even worse for making him run across the rocky road with no shoes.
"We're almost there, ok? Just like... 5 more minutes." Ethan tried to sound hopeful, but it was pretty much impossible.
"I cant do it... I cant do it... pull over Ethan..." Cypress shook his head and Ethan sighed, then put on his hazard lights before pulling over. He put the car in park and turned the windshield wipers off and watched the rain cover up the window.
"Just listen to the rain alright?" Ethan said quietly, and Cypress rocked back and forth, his breathing was deep and shaky and his crying was soft. He let out a quiet ok.
"Here, hold on." Ethan reached forward and pressed a button, the black panel on the ceiling of the car slid to the back, revealing the glass on the top.
Cypress looked up and watched the rain fall over him, it felt like it was hitting his face because he was crying.
"I'll turn off the lights." Ethan smiled and did so, then they were left in the dark with only the outside lighting their view. He could see Cypress still staring above him, the mix of traffic lights and building lights illuminated his face.
They stayed like this for almost 30 minutes, until a cop tapped on the glass, and Ethan rolled down the window.
"What's going on? Why are you pulled over with your hazards on?"
"S- sorry. My friend he just uh, didn't feel well. He broke his hand, and when we were driving over to the ER he had a panic attack... or something like that." Ethan turned his hazard off, then looked back at the officer.
"Well he looks calm now, get him over to the hospital or I'm getting EMS."
Ethan looked over at Cypress, who was resting his head against the window and possibly asleep.
"Yeah, I will. Thank you officer." Ethan turned back and smiled, the officer nodded, then walked away.
Boy, don't waste your time fightin', that's just the devil toyin' with ya...
Cypress woke up in his room, it was still raining, he could hear it hitting the roof and his window. His hand felt really tight and warm, he sat up and looked at it, it was in a cast. Two of his fingers were heavily taped together.
He adjusted himself so that he was facing his window, he watched the leaves on the bushes outside bob up and down with the rain.
What happened to you...
