The Pool
Cypress didn't mind walking long distances, he found it calming before going anywhere. It took him about 20 minutes to reach the pool, and he was the last one to arrive. He noticed that Jesse wasn't there, and noticed a blonde hair girl with a very nice figure in a blue gingham bikini- this must be Evelyn.
He opened the gate and walked onto the white cold concrete, but he didn't feel it cause he was wearing sandals. Ethan looked over at the sound of the opening gate and smiled brightly when he saw Cypress, Cypress felt a volt of fluster shock him.
Ethan was probably the most beautiful person in the world to Cypress, no one could be put higher than him. He had dirty blonde curls that loosely fell around his face and ended at the nape of his neck, his skin was sun kissed and freckled, his eyes were like fields of grass. To Cypress, Ethan was the embodiment of summer, just a bright, warm, glowing entity that didn't need a season to show himself.
To Ethan, Cypress was like winter. Eerily beautiful but also eerily reserved. It was hard for him to get along with strangers, he wasn't very welcoming to anyone except his friends- which he knew before the crash. If someone were to enjoy Cypress... they needed a more solitary taste, like winter. You could tell there were dark thoughts in his mind, but also a desire to be seen as something necessary to someone. Cypress was the kind of person to flourish in a room full of nothing and silence- but he would wither away at a party.
The two were polar opposites, maybe that's why they were like magnets to each other.
"Cy! A little late- that's fine though!" Ethan got up from his seat and walked over to Cypress who waved aggressively. When the blonde reached Cypress he patted his back before wrapping an arm around him and leading his isolated friend to the group.
"This is Evelyn, Terrance's girlfriend, and Abigail's best friend!"
Evelyn was warned previously of Cypress's... oddities, so she waved hi- usually she would shake their hand, but she figured it wasn't something Cypress would appreciate.
"Hi Cypress! Nice to meet you..." Evelyn smiled.
"You have a bug on your shoulder..." Cypress mumbled, Ethan looked over at Evelyn and he wasn't lying.
"AAAH!" Abigail got up and ran behind Ethan, Cypress walked over to Evelyn who was paralyzed in fear, and he gently scooped the large moth off her shoulder.
"Is it off?" Evelyn slowly glanced at her shoulder and then sighed when she saw only her skin, "thank you Cypress..." she realized then Cypress was no where near her and was in fact- sitting on the steps of the pool, quietly observing the moth fluttering in his hand.
"You are dying... I'm sorry." Cypress gently stroked its body, "I'm guessing you're the kind that can't eat, that's stupid." He lifted his hand to his eye level to look into the moths eyes, "you're not stupid, but your design is."
"Sorry, he's... very socially absent." Abigail sighed and sat back in her seat next to Evelyn.
"Did he take off his shoes?" Ethan looked around for Cypresses sandals, not finding them anywhere. Abigail shook her head, and Evelyn giggled.
"Cy! Take your damn shoes off!" Abigail yelled and Cypress looked over at Abigail, and just stared at her, "I KNOW YOU UNDERSTAND ME! DONT PLAY DUMB!"
"Abigail! Don't talk to him likes he some dog, Jesus Christ!" Ethan sighed and walked over to Cypress, then crouched next to him on the step above the pool. "Yo, Cy, can you take your shoes off?"
"I did."
"Where are they?"
Cypress pointed over to the deep end, where his sandals were floating. Ethan laughed and then slipped in the pool.
"I'm guessing you're sticking with the moth- I'll get them." Ethan started swimming towards Cypress's shoes and the other watched while feeling the moths wings flutter against his skin, which made him look down.
"I'm guessing you would rather die in a bush alone, I would too." He got up and walked over to a bush, "well, I'll probably see you again in a couple years, I hope you remember me. If you don't that's ok- you're a moth so I don't expect you to."
Cypress smiled and put the moth on the bush, then went back on the steps of the pool and sat down. Suddenly, Ethan popped his head out of the water, startling his friend.
"Woah! Calm down bud! Here's your shoes..." Ethan smirked and then threw them at the table they had put their other belongings on. "Where's your friend?"
"I put him in a bush to die."
"Sounds grim."
"Not if you're a bug."
"Damn it must be nice as a bug."
"Well, he doesn't have a mouth, so he starved to death. I don't think that's nice."
"Oh, never mind then. Hey did you know me and Bailey broke up?"
Cypress looked over at Ethan, who was now sitting on the step beneath Cypress.
"Oh... ok." Cypress looked away, then back at Ethan, "remember when I walked in on you and Bailey having sex."
Ethan's eyes went wide, it wasn't out of character for Cypress to say... weird things, but it still shocked him.
"Uh, yeah... yeah I do. Wow Cy, that was... that was very out of the blue."
"Huh, well I thought it was funny." Cypress shrugged and stared out into the pool, "Hm."
"Well... I'm going to get some beer, you want anything?" Ethan got up and stretched, then looked down at Cypress, who was still staring.
"Cy, do you-"
"Yeah." Cypress got up and walked over to the table, and Ethan followed.
"Ethan go away you're soaking wet!" Abigail backed her chair up and took a sip from her beer bottle.
"You're wearing a bathing suit! Aren't you gonna hop in?!" Ethan took the bottle opener and opened up his own bottle. Meanwhile, Cypress was aggressively searching his backpack, he could never remember which pocket had what in it.
"That doesn't mean I'm going in th-"
"FUCK- oh."
Everyone looked at Cypress who was now lighting up a cigarette.
"Ew! Why aren't you just vaping?! That shit smells horrible..." Abigail groaned. "I hate men..."
"They're better than vapes, I just use them at school cause they don't smell..." Cypress blew the smoke out and walked over to the cooler to get himself a beer.
"Cy... just use the fucking vape you know that shit bothers Abigail." Ethan sighed, then handed Cypress the bottle opener when he met him back at the table.
"Fine after I finish this one." Cypress put the cigarette in his mouth and opened his bottle, then took it out and let out a breath of smoke.
"I like your shirt Cypress, my brother loves that band." Evelyn commented, and Cypress looked down at his shirt, which was a gorillaz shirt.
"Thanks I stole it." Cypress sat down in a chair and put out his cigarette, then searched his backpack for his vape, which he found and started to use.
"When the hell did you steal that?" Abigail took a bite of strawberry and leaned back.
"When I wanted to." Cypress pulled out his phone and started to play some weird Russian music.
"What the fuck are you playing?" Ethan backed up and raised an eyebrow, "Dude what is that?"
"Russian music."
"Do you even speak Russian?" Ethan took a drink from his bottle and sat on his chair. Abigail scooted away to avoid the water.
"No." Cypress put his phone down and closed his eyes while leaning back in his seat. This was a tell tale sign that Cypress didn't want to talk, and nothing was going to make him speak.
"Well he's MIA, I'm going in the pool." Ethan shrugged and got up, Evelyn got up too, and joined him in the pool.
Abigail looked over at Cypress, who had his arms crossed and was tapping his fingers to the rhythm of the song, he also put his headphones in. She figured she could just stand in the pool and not get her dreadlocks wet, so she tied them up in a loose bun and walked into the pool.
"He's nice!" Evelyn said softly and threw the tennis ball back at Ethan.
"Yeah, he is! Just a little awkward." Ethan smiled and then threw the ball at Abigail, who smacked it away. "Wow, you should play volleyball."
"No! I hate sports, only good sport is dance because it's fun to do AND watch."
"I do ballet, it's not very fun to do..." Evelyn sighed, "but it looks pretty!" She smiled.
"Of course it looks pretty! I've seen you dance before, you're like- ethereal." Abigail threw the ball at Evelyn, but completely missed and instead threw it at Ethan's arm.
"Jesus Abigail you suck ass..." Ethan laughed and then threw it at Evelyn, who caught it gracefully.
"Is Cypress gonna hop in or are you going to throw him in again? Cause I'm not for... that." Abigail pointed to Cypress, who may or may not be asleep.
"I think we should just let him be!" Evelyn brushed some hair out of her face and looked over at Abigail, "maybe he's on his period!"
"THATS A WHOLE ASS MAN!" Abigail yelled.
"Well, maybe he's you know... trans?" Evelyn shrugged, "I mean he looks... very feminine... somewhat..." she looked over at Cypress, "I mean he hasn't taken his shirt off..."
Ethan was laughing so hard he could barely keep himself upright. It wasn't the transgender part that was funny, it was Abigail's face.
"Did I say something wrong?! I didn't mean to offend!" Evelyn hid her face behind her hands, "sorry..."
"No, you're fine Evelyn... you're just mistaken." Abigail sighed, "but you might've killed Ethan."
"I assure you Evelyn..." Ethan laughed lightly, "Cypress is a cisgender man... trust me... he's just androgynous looking." He shrugged.
"YOUVE SEEN CYPRESS'S COCK?!" Abigail screamed, then covered her mouth, "oh that was louder than I thought."
"I may or may not have walked in on him changing... multiple times..." Ethan shrugged.
"Well? Was it-"
"Hi." Cypress stood above them on the concrete, then crouched down and shoved an airpod in Ethan's ear. "What does this say."
Ethan immediately recognized it was French, and listened.
Mais quand je suis avec toi, je te regarde malgré moi
Un drôle de sentiment rien à faire, c'est comme ça
"Oh, uh... ok he's saying "But when I'm with you
I'm watching you, in spite of myself A funny feeling Nothing to do, that's how it is"."He looked up at Cypress who nodded. Then he felt the airpod come out of his ear.
"That's pretty depressing..." Evelyn looked down, "also makes no sense."
"Cause it's originally in French, I just translated it." Ethan shrugged.
"I didn't know you spoke French!" Evelyn smiled, "that's cool!"
"My parents are from Romandy, it's like a part of Switzerland where everyone speaks French. So I kind of grew up with French in the home and English everywhere else."
"I speak Creole." Abigail raised her hand, "it's like French and Portuguese had a baby."
"Nice! I don't speak any language besides English... I know ASL does that count?" Evelyn readjusted her top and Ethan glanced away.
"Sure!" Abigail smiled, "so you need me to adjust the shoulder straps?" Evelyn nodded and Abigail swam over to Evelyn to help.
"Cypress do you speak any other language?" Evelyn moved her hair to the front and looked over at Cypress, who was sitting next to Ethan on the concrete with his legs in the water.
"No I'm too stupid to learn another language..."
"That's not true bud, you're smart!" Ethan patted his leg, which resulted in Cypress slowly moving his leg away, "sorry- forgot you don't like being touched."
"I think you could learn a language! It just takes time and work." Evelyn smiled, and Cypress shook his head.
"I have brain damage, I literally can't learn a new language." For some reason Cypress smiled at her, and that was somewhat a giveaway- along with the rest of the events that happened earlier, that he was mentally disabled. "Awkward" as Abigail had said, and "socially absent" were kind of the censored version of mentally disabled.
"Oh... sorry, um, well-" she didn't really know how to respond to that. Cypress cocked his head to the side and looked at her curiously.
"Why are you sorry? You didn't cause it..." he laughed lightly, and Ethan quickly changed the topic, seeing that Cypress was starting to take the awkward turn on the conversation.
"So how's Terrance?" Ethan smiled. Evelyn at first looked worried, then she laughed, this made Cypress's stare sharper.
"He's uh, he's good! You know... still... joking about things..." she looked down.
"Cy why do you keep staring at Evelyn while I'm fixing her top?!" Abigail snapped at Cypress, who blinked a couple times.
"I'm studying her face..." he continued to look at Evelyn.
"Well stop it's probably creeping her out?" Abigail raised an eyebrow, she couldn't understand how Cypress would think that's okay.
"Evelyn, why did you look worried..." Cypress crossed his legs and leaned in forward.
"Cypress... leave her alone." Ethan turned to look at him, "sorry Evelyn, he's-"
"Did- did I look worried?"
"I saw your boyfriend today, he called you f-"
"CYPRESS FOR FUCKS SAKE!" Ethan pulled himself up and grabbed Cypress's arm before dragging him out of the gate and over by the bushes.
