The Diner
Jesse parked the van at a diner, and they all got out. The waitress put them in a booth, Abigail, Jesse, and Evelyn sat on one side, Ethan and Cypress sat on the other.
Cypress held his stomach and leaned his head against the window. His entire torso felt sore, he was definitely going to be bruised tomorrow. Abigail's stare felt like a knife to Cypress, it was cold and sharp, and was very intentional.
"Abby, stop death staring at Cy." Ethan hissed and Abigail sighed, then looked down at her menu.
"I just- how how could you say that?!" Abigail glared at Cypress, who continued to look out the window. It was raining now.
"Abby I'm not mad, neither should you..." Evelyn put a hand on Abigail's shoulder, who sighed.
"What did he do wrong though? Like, he called out Terrance being a fucking douche, and pretty much saved Evelyn from being in a shitty relationship." Jesse raised an eyebrow, "isn't that a good thing?"
"It was very obvious he didn't have "saving her from a shitty relationship" in mind. He just wanted to say it." Abigail leaned back and crossed her arms.
"Well either way, it helped Evelyn. And Evelyn isn't mad, you're just being a..." Ethan stopped, then looked down.
"A bitch?" Abigail glared at Ethan, "I know I'm being one Ethan, but he deserves to deal with it."
"No! He doesn't!" Ethan raised his voice a little bit, then paused to calm down, "and he's right here-ignoring you, so obviously it's not working and it's bothering all of us."
"I'm not ignoring, I just don't care." Cypress shrugged.
"Oh for fucks sake..." Ethan groaned, then leaned back and closed his eyes.
"So you don't care that I'm mad at you?"
"No not really..." Cypress shrugged again.
"Makes sense, the only thing you care about is Ethan. If I was Ethan you would be ruined wouldn't you? Huh?" Abigail teased, this got Cypress's attention, he looked over at her and glared.
"Shut up."
"Oh so now it matters when it's me saying something."
"Fuck you..." Cypress said quietly, "Ethan can you get out..."
"Oh, yeah." Ethan left the booth and Cypress wasted no time in leaving the group and going outside. Ethan sat back down and glared at Abigail. "What the fuck Abigail..."
"I did exactly what he did the other night-"
"Abby oh my god!" Evelyn yelled, then slammed her hands on the table, "I'm not hurt! I would be if he didn't say anything- because I'd still be with Terrance! I don't care if that's not what he intended to do, and that he was just being rude, I'm glad he did it. It was a wake up call, maybe he meant it that way, as in, "are you seriously dating this idiot?" Maybe that's what he meant!"
"Damn..." Jesse said under his breath. Ethan gave him a confused look.
"Seriously Abby, what you just did was fucked up, I already know that Cypress likes me, and now you just embarrassed him in front of everyone, and also outed him." Ethan sighed, "shit..."
"I know... I didn't realize what I was saying in the moment... but I didn't say he liked you." Abigail looked at Ethan, "right?"
"Yeah but it sure alluded to it..." Jesse grabbed a few sugar packets and started to stack them.
"Is he in the van?" Abby stood up, and Evelyn got out of the booth.
"Don't know..." Ethan peered over to look outside, "oh, no he's just sitting there...."
Abigail nodded, then left the diner and stood over Cypress, who was vaping.
"Fuck off Abigail."
"I'm sorry Cy-"
"FUCK OFF!" Cypress got up and looked at her, "you don't even care! You don't even- y- you're just like Terrance! You just want Evelyn to yourself- y- you just want everyone to yourself! And you push me away!" His voice broke.
"How can you say that I push you away?! We hung out in the printing room, we're friends Cypress- I see you and treat you the same way-"
"Not around Evelyn! Not around Ethan, or Jesse, or anyone! You apologize about how I act- y- you're embarrassed about me! You don't think I see it?!" He teared up, "YOU DON'T THINK IM EMBARRASSED?!"
"Cypress please... I- I'm sorry you fee-"
"You're not sorry! You cant understand- I stutter, I twitch, I spazz out, I can't process words, gestures, looks, I cant socialize right, hell I fucking ruin hang outs. I'm a fag, I'm fucking losing my hearing, I can't write well, I can't read out loud, I have a tremor so bad I can't even- I can't even hold a full glass, someone touches my fucking neck I freak out-"
"No, Cy, don't do this to yourself-"
"YOU THINK I WANT TO LIVE LIKE THIS ABIGAIL?! EVERYDAY I WAKE UP IM DISAPPOINTED, IM EMBARRASSED."
Abigail started to tear up, but Cypress kept going. The both of them didn't realize that Ethan had walked out of the diner and was behind Abigail.
"I WANT TO FUCKING KILL MYSELF, BUT IM TOO MUCH OF A COWARD TO DO IT. SO IM SORRY."
"Cypress! Stop! That's- that's enough Jesus..." Ethan sighed and went in front of Abigail and held her shoulders, "hey you alright?"
"Y- yeah.. no..." Abigail shook her head, "I- I didn't know Cy..." she looked at Cypress, "I... I didn't realize..." she started crying more.
Cypress just stared at the two of them, he felt a weird mixture of guilt and anger.
"Just go in the van alright? Here Jesse gave me the keys." Ethan handed the keys to Abigail, who took them and rushed to the van. After watching her get in Ethan turned around and looked at Cypress.
"Cypress do you actually mean that?"
"It doesn't matter..." Cypress looked down, he was crying too but quietly. He shook his head and wiped his eyes, "it doesn't... I don't..."
"No, no don't think like that." Ethan hugged him, "you mean a lot to us okay?" He rubbed his back.
"I don't want to..." Cypress sobbed, "I don't want to be here anymore... b- but I don't want to hurt you guys..."
Ethan realized something, Cypress was letting him hug him. He only did this when he was either really really hurting, or he was too tired and he gave up. This time, it felt like both.
"You shouldn't feel like that Cy, you're a good friend. Yes you're difficult and a little abrasive but that's fine. You're fine the way you are, even if you're..."
"Damaged..." Cypress finished the sentence.
"Yeah, that. You know I care a lot about you, and so does Abigail and Jesse. Hell even Evelyn. Your sister loves you, she doesn't need to lose someone else... you don't need to lose all of us either. You deserve us Cy, you deserve to live. Just because you're different and people don't get you sometimes- or you don't get them- that doesn't mean you shouldn't be here."
"But it's so difficult..." Cypress whimpered.
"You have people who want to help you Cypress, we're all here for you, ok?" Ethan hugged him tighter, and surprisingly Cypress hugged him back.
"Mhm..."
