Chapter 43
For the next few days, Maddy was busy trying to think on how to catch Bruce red-handed. It was like she was living inside a mystery novel and she was obsessed. She had even stopped updating her Wattpad stories because she was too invested in the story she was currently living in.
"Maddy!" Xander exclaimed. "Are you even listening to me?"
"No?" Maddy said with a sheepish smile. The two of them were sitting on Maddy's bed with nothing to do because the others decided that now would be a good time to play matchmaker. Leia and Alexa dragged Jeremy out with a Chesire cat smile giving some lame-ass excuse. Xander seemed least bothered by it. Maddy suspected that Xander knew that Alexa and Leia were trying to play matchmaker. It would take a really dense person to not notice such an obvious thing. He seemed to find it amusing that Maddy got all flustered and embarrassed about it which only made Maddy more embarrassed.
Xander mock glared at her. "When I put all my effort to memorize hundreds of pick-up lines, the lest you could do is pay attention to me."
"You seriously memorize pick-up lines?" Maddy asked with a laugh.
"Yes," Xander replied in a haughty tone. He even crossed his arms and turned his nose up.
"You are supposed to be the next Alpha. Shouldn't you have better things to do?"
"There are so many things to do," Xander said with a loud sigh as he tilted his head back and laid down with his head on Maddy's lap. Right. On. Maddy's. Lap. Maddy cleared her throat as she sat there frozen. Was this a normal thing to do among friends? Maddy concentrated on what Xander was saying instead of concentrating on how close they were.
"Do you believe in fate?" Xander asked abruptly.
"Considering that fact that I've met the personified and immortal version of fate, yes."
Xander nodded. "Me too. I think I was destined to meet you cause let's face it. Without me, your life would be so boring."
"If by boring you mean less life threatening, then yes," Maddy said amusedly. Ever since Maddy kidnapped by the rogues so that they could have leverage over Tristan, the Alpha of the Callisto Pack, Maddy's life had changed. Now, she was just jumping from on life-threatening situation to another life-threatening situation. Maddy was so lost in her thought that she completely zoned out until she was hit by a pillow.
Maddy gasped and pushed Xander off her lap. "How dare you?" Maddy said as she picked up the pillow.
"You weren't paying attention to me," Xander said with a pout.
"You picked the wrong fight," Maddy said with narrowed eyes. "We both know that I am the queen of pillows."
Xander's eyes twinkled as he too reached for another pillow. "We'll see about that."
For the next few minutes, the two of them had a full-fledged pillow fight. They even managed to tear one pillow. At the end, the two of them were covered in the cotton-y thing that is used to stuff the pillows.
Maddy flopped down on her bed beside Xander with laughter bubbling out of her. "I totally kicked your butt."
"Keep telling yourself that," Xander said as he partially got up so that he was balancing on his elbows.
Maddy's breath hitched as Xander leaned forward but then she realized that Xander was just leaning forward to take out the cotton in her hair. Maddy cleared her throat as she felt her face turn red. Keep cool, Maddy, she reminded herself.
At that moment, the door to Maddy's room opened and Alexa's cheery voice floated inside the room. "Are you guys—oh my god."
Maddy and Xander got up hurriedly. "This isn't what it looks like," Maddy blurted out. They probably looked rather... intimate with Xander leaning over her like that.
"So, you guys weren't having a pillow fight?" Leia asked with raised eyebrows and a small smile on her lips.
"Then it is exactly like what it looks like."
"Your face is like a tomato right now," Xander said with a snicker.
"You are supposed to be on my side!"
