Day 4| The toys
Day 4
BrrrBrrr!.......... brrrbrrr! ........... brrrbrrrr! ...........
I woke up with the ring of my cellphone. The locked screen was saying it was 7AM in the morning. And it was a Sunday. Why the hell someone was calling me on a Sunday morning?!
"Hello?" I moaned.
"Angel?"
That voice...
"OLIVER?! Wha-wha...?"
"Hey there! Sorry if I woke you up. Just calling to say I am not going to stay in town much longer. And I want to see you before my flight-" He paused "...because I need to tell you something."
How had he gotten my NUMBER? What he was SAYING?? "NEED TO TELL ME WHAT?!?"
"My place at 3."
And he left. I stayed there listening the bipbipbipbip for almost an hour. When I went back to the screen the location was beeping there, from an unknown contact, and it was a big combination of random numbers, and it made me stare at it with nothing in the head except air.
The location he had sent leaded me to the neighborhood near my aunt's, which was near the hill we had kissed. I left my bedroom to then step in front of his door, and it was like time hadn't passed in this meantime. Even the wind swirled around strangely, and I had never stopped to think about how the wind used to swirl anyways, and there was a bird waiting on a tree.
Sigh.
Again. Sigh.
Oliver opened the door. He was wearing a dark blouse that seemed to be blue, fitted perfectly around his body. Gorgeous today, and even more beautiful. Something in the air said he lived there alone with no furniture. The house was completely empty except for a red sofa and a shelf with a Barbie doll standing right in the middle of it. I gulped.
Something wrong is not right, Angelina.
I was about to run away but he was faster, asking me to sit first, then sit himself. I could see the way he was calm, and it frightened me.
"Let's go straight to the point. Angel, do you believe in evolution?"
Suddenly, series of thoughts passed through my mind: dinosaurs, cavemen, monkeys, and a man named Darwin and his ship.
I nodded.
He glimpsed briefly at my cellphone, then turned his eyes to me again "Great. And if I say Homo sapiens, that are the common humans, are already an inferior race? That right now, new babies are being born with something more in their DNA?"
That conversation was getting weird. I squeezed my phone, wishing it to be a portal to somewhere out of there... Oliver gave another look at it, and I lowered my eyes at it too, wondering what was wrong. And then the thing happened. My cellphone became cold, and out of a sudden a layer of ice started surrounding everything. I saw crystals forming and gluing at each other, like drops of water, throughout the entire device, and I realized my hands were literally freezing.
I let go a scream, my cellphone fell, and I jumped from the sofa leaving a big distance between me and... and....
Oliver was still there, looking at me with the same superiority expression he used at school in the first day.
"It's a gift." He said smoothly.
"You. Oliver. You are not human."
"No, I am human, but a different kind."
He was so calm I wanted to punch his eyes. Beautiful eyes by the way, today a mixture of honey and lemon.
I shook my head. Not now, Angelina, not now. Oliver had just showed he was some kind of Jack Frost, and I couldn't let myself fall for anything except sanity. The problem, however, was that the person looking at me was the one I began worshiping since the first time I saw, and was also the one saying bullshit, and was also the one who freeze my phone in front of my eyes.
"We are super humans, Angel. And we call ourselves Arians."
"Wait... But that is Hitler's thing!"
He nodded. "Actually that's it... but we don't have to have white skin, yellow hair and blue eyes to be an Arian. That's the difference, and that's what Hitler didn't understand years ago."
"So why are you telling me all of this?!"
His serious gaze fell apart, and Oliver Snowfields showed his smile. He went to the shelf and picked up the Barbie sitting there; and I realized Babies are, undoubtedly, Hitler's kind of Arian.
I watched as he sat again on the couch, and put the doll in front of me. "Okay, I want you to look at this toy and imagine a real life for her. Can you do it?"
"...Okay."
I thought about a fancy style like all Barbies have. They love going to the mall and spending money on cloths and make up. Then I stopped. And thought something else. And if this Barbie was different? She could be nice with other people, the kind of person who likes everyone. The kind of friend I've never had. I felt a poke in my stomach.
"Barbie was bullied when she was a kid. And that's why she is stronger than any of the other teenagers. Yes, she is rich. But she doesn't care. She only wants to be happy, because that's what she likes. Little actions, big smiles." I paused for a moment. "Her house is big to shelter any kind of pets. She likes singing in the shower and playing with children. She is a real friend and.. she would never ignore... people."
My throat burned with the effort of not crying in front of Oliver, he was handsomely calm, eyebrows curved in some kind of concern. Barbie went heavier. I was holding all my pain, all the bullying, agony and loneliness the other girls made me feel...
Oliver took Barbie from my hands, and I thank him inside my brain.
"Do you want Barbie to be alive, so she could hug you?"
Of course I wanted, a friend, a BFF, to hug me and teach me how to make a perfect makeup, how to choose the best dress, how to act in front of the boy I like. I have wanted this for years..!
A hand touched my shoulder, as delicate as grandma's. "Hey girl... why are you upset?" A honeyed voice said on my back. It wasn't from Oliver. That was a girl. And there was no girl in the room one minute ago. I turned abruptly and all I could see was a pair of big blue eyes and blondness framing a perfectly made-up face.
Barbie???
"Wow, look at your own face..." She showed a little mirror appeared from nowhere. Another Angelina stared back, her eyes red and, wait, was that a pimple?
"See? We can not cry in front of..." Barbie's shinny eyes glimpsed at Oliver and than back to me. "... hotties like this one!" She winked sensually in his direction. And I saw he looked at her like a dog looks at its food.
"WHAT?!" I yelled.
"Ahan, Angel, meet your Barbie Doll." Oliver said. "YOU did this because you are an Arian. You can transform not living matter to live matter. That's your power."
I can give life to- toys?
Not possible not possible not possible.
But wait, that was right.
William Gray.
The truth was clear like the window at Tianna's bakery: William WAS in my room that day. He was the first proof of my powers and I thought I was having hallucinations!
"You can go home, we are done."
Barbie stopped brushing my hair and pouted at Oliver. "Can I take her to a salon? Her hair needs a cut"
"Of course you can. Now, if you excuse, I need to pack the rest of my stuff."
•••
The salon had a great smell and great professionals, who cut my hair and were talking to me nicely while a lady arranged my friend's nails, that were already perfect so I didn't know what she was doing.
We payed with some money appeared from nowhere, and soon Barbie was taking me to a toy store nearby the salon.
"Here", she gave me more money, "to buy more toys."
"What?"
She shifted her footrest.
"The money! It is ending, and it came with my bag, so could you please buy more bags with money? and a car too."
My head started spinning. I could make money. Of course, I could transform plastic cloths and shoes to real ones, so obviously I could make money. So I could buy a lot of fake notes and then...
"NO!!"
"But..."
"Look, just buy a car. One car. A pink one."
"I won't buy a pink car!"
"So buy whatever you want!" She pushed me into the store.
•••
I bought a red car.
Barbie was still waiting outside brushing her hair. "Hey you're late, I gave you 10 min to find your stuff. You spent almost 40."
"It wasn't my fault, the store was full of.. toys."
Guilt.
"Don't say you bought a lot of fake money."
"There is A LOT OF money in there!"
"Lord, Angelina!! That's illegal-"
"Illegal?" I made a sarcastic voice. "The government do not accept the act of buying fake notes and turning them into real ones with Arian powers?" I glared at her deeply. "C'mon I've never heard of such a law. Let's go."
We found a perfect dead-end street to place the little car. It was big enough, empty and hidden from prying eyes. Barbie stayed protecting the entrance while I placed the toy right in the middle of the street. As it touched the ground, I stepped back.
"Okay, car" I said "I want you to... Grow?"
Barbie laughed. "Impressive..." She came closer and touched it.
"That's how I made you."
"Liar. You had to put emotion in your words to make me.... and let's call the car Reddie."
"Reddie??"
"BarbieReddie, then."
"I prefer only Reddie."
"Ugh you're so indecisive. Let's go shopping?"
"I have the money."
•••
Barbie parked Reddie in front of my house. I turned to her, ready to say everything I had planned to say all the way home.
"I will disable you now, B." I looked down at my new shoes. "My mother can not see you until I understand things better, I must admit my conditions to myself, keep the idea, you know?"
"Okie, bae, but don't forget me in some dusty drawer."
•••
William William William!!
I ran upstairs, holding my Barbie Girl. She had a glued smile painted on her face, but for me, it was real.
The room was exactly the same, which meant mom haven't broken anything. I put Barbie on a desk and protected her with a shirt, just to, I don't know, protect. My secret drawer was closed and safe as always, so I picked the key into my old rain boot and opened it. William was the first thing my eyes touched.
"Okay, Will", I said. "it's time."
