Chapter Two 'Is that a Body?'
"The fuck are you doing here?"
"I-I-..." Julia stumbled back, anxiously playing with her hands, not knowing what to do with them. Her body felt heavy as her head clouded over with anxiety. Love. Fear. The overwhelming strong urge to run to Rafe and hug him, to burst into tears. Maybe she did need that medication her doctor recommended, because maybe she wasn't as okay as she thought she was.
"Julia." Rafe stated simply, he stepped towards her. "What. The. Fuck. Are. You. Doing. Here?" He asked, using his infamous 'Rafe' hand gestures and waving one of his hands around.
"I came to deliver some mail?" Rafe rolled his eyes, and holy shit was he hot. But Julia shook her head as her knees went weak and he focused back on her.
"It's 11:45 PM on a Friday night, and you came to my house to deliver mail?"
"If you can believe it-"
"I don't." Rafe cut her off.
"Well that's good cause it's a lie." Julia said tugging on her earlobe. They just stood there in silence, staring at each other. The only light coming from inside the house, Rafe's face lit at the perfect angle.
To Rafe, Julia looked perfect too. Her face was being illuminated by the light coming from inside the house. She looked like a goddess. He ached for her, missed her. He wanted to run over and hug her, just scoop her up and apologize for everything. But he couldn't do that, it wasn't safe for anyone.
"How are you?" Rafe asked, breaking the silence. Julia looked up at Rafe, her eyes peeling themselves from the ground.
"Oh." She said, shocked by his question. She could tell the truth or she could lie. Judging by how her lying had been going her far, she came to the conclusion that truth was her only friend right now. "I'm not good at all." She sighed, shaking her head, then she did a small, sad laugh, and smirked at Rafe. He smirked back and nodded his head.
"Yeah, I get that." Julia took a deep breath collecting herself.
"I came here tonight." She paused looking down at the ground, playing with her feet. She rocked back and fourth on her heels. "Because, I wanted to see you." She said quietly, Rafe sighed defeated and crossed his arms, he knew this would happen.
"Julia-"
"I know! I know I'm not allowed! But what was I supposed to do Rafe? Just, not see you?"
"Yeah Julia, that's exactly what you're supposed to do. That's the point of a break up, to break up."
"Well I didn't wanna break up!" Julia said defensively, crossing her arms.
"Well we couldn't stay together."
"Why not?"
"You know why not!" Rafe snapped, Julia stepped back, a tad alarmed. Rafe ran his hot, ringed, hand through his hair trying to calm himself down. "Julia... you need to go. Alright? You can't be here." Julia just nodded, but she didn't move.
"I have so much I wanna say to you." Rafe pressed his lips together and nodded his head.
"Write me a letter."
"What?" Julia asked, confused.
"If you're gonna keep coming by and saying you're delivering mail, then at least have the lie be plausible." Julia rolled her eyes and headed back the way she came. "Thank you!" Rafe called out to her, Julia turned around, her foot already in the secret path.
"For what?" Julia asked.
"For telling people the break-up was amicable."
"Oh, of course Rafe!" Julia said sweetly. "You have enough heat on you, I was the last thing you needed." She disappeared into the pathway and Rafe sighed watching her go.
"You're the only thing I need." He said to himself.
~~~~~~~~~
Julia carefully closed the two glass doors that lead into the kitchen/ first living room of her house. She sighed in relief when they shut quietly, but her relief vanished when the lights flicked on.
"Good, your home." Her father said coming into the kitchen, she cringed and knitted her face together, turning around to face her dad slowly.
"Heyyyyyyyy dad." She said, playing with her hands awkwardly. Bill stood by the fridge, he was in a loose grey tee shirt and some running shorts. His tablet, book, and reading glasses sat on the white marble island. He was digging around in the fridge and sighed.
"I forgot to go to the store and get that fresh mozzarella I like to have at night while I read my book." He said, defeated. Julia raised an eyebrow confused as to whether he was talking to Julia, or just to himself. Bill turned his attention towards his daughter, who stood there looking rather confused.
"Are you alright? You haven't been yourself lately?"
"What do you mean?" Julia asked, swallowing nervously.
"You're just usually more snarky, and more like... a firecracker. You just seem a little calmer." Julia had felt it, the shyness and awkwardness that came out of nowhere. She shrugged but nodded her head.
"I'm okay dad, I'm just trying to figure out who I am." Bill nodded then turned his attention back towards the fridge.
"I get that honey, that's what breakups are all about. Finding yourself without the other person." Julia rolled her eyes.
"You sound like Hannah."
"Huh!" Bill scoffed, taking some ingredients out of their fridge and setting it on the island. "God help us all then. I'm gonna have a grilled cheese and some chips, you want one?"
"Yeah." Julia responded quickly, she had been busy all day, and had just forgotten to eat a full meal. She had some little snacks here and there, but the thought of a full meal sounded perfect.
"Alright, go get changed. I'll whip these up for you when you get back." Bill said, getting out a pan and some olive oil.
"Thanks dad." Julia called out heading into the hallway, as she headed upstairs and passed Hayley's door she could swear she heard muffled voices.
"I can't believe their alive-"
"Shhh." She shrugged, not wanting to be bothered with her little sister's drama.
Julia headed into her room and got changed into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, as she brushed through her hair quickly, her phone dinged. She picked it up off her bed, and her heart raced.
Rafe
It was nice seeing you, you looked great
Julia was in utter shock, she reread the message a few times just to make sure all the words were correct in her brain as she processed it. Julia smiled to herself, as she got an idea.
Me
How long are you going to be awake for?
She chewed on the inside of her cheek nervously as Rafe texted out a reply.
Rafe
A while. I don't sleep much. Y?
Me
Got an idea, meet me on your dock in 20
No excuses
Not taking no for an answer
I got coke and food
Rafe
See you in 20
Me
Was it the coke and food that convinced you???? ;)
Rafe
...
No comment
Julia laughed to herself before running back into her closet, she threw on black leggings and a hoodie, coincidentally it belonged to Rafe. She also grabbed a medium sized black backpack, throwing in a phone charger, her wallet, the coke, and a hairbrush before running back down into the kitchen.
"Hey Dad!" Julia called out sweetly as she stepped into the kitchen.
"Yeah?" Bill answered as he stood by the stove reading a book.
"Could I have two grilled cheese sandwiches and some chips to go?"
"Sure, I have one done, this one's almost done. Grab whatever you want." Bill said, waving his hand towards the pantry. Julia smiled and grabbed two large bags of nacho chips and some pretzels. She also grabbed two water bottles and two soda cans from the fridge.
"Here." Bill said, handing her two baggied grilled cheese sandwiches, she put all the stuff in her backpack and slipped her phone into a pocket of the hoodie.
"Great thanks! I'll be out late so don't wait up."
"Wouldn't dream of it, have fun." Bill called out, immersed in his book. Julia headed down the back hallway that led to the garage.
"Taking the boat." Julia said, grabbing the keys off the hook by the back door.
"Just refuel it when you dock!"
"Thanks dad! Love you!"
"Love you too sweetheart! And with that Julia shut the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Rafe stepped out onto the dock, the cool breeze floating around him, he saw her and his heart stopped. Julia was standing on the side of the baot facing the dock, leaning against the metal pole. She smirked and waved him over, Rafe put his hands in his fleece pockets and walked down the dock.
"All right Jules, you've got me intrigued." He said as he approached her, she smirked and rolled her eyes.
"I always have you intrigued." She said, one hand was wrapped around the metal pole next to her, the other on the pole above her. Rafe leaned in, smirking, and wrapping his hand around hers on top of the pole.
"No truer words ever spoken." He whispered in her ear, Julia blushed before grabbing his collar and pulling him onto the boat. She headed over towards the captains station and started up the boat, Rafe sat behind her on one of the white couches.
As they floated on top of the water, Rafe admired Julia. He had missed her presence. Her calmness, her spunkiness. The way they would flirt, and fight, and do... other things. He missed hugging her, touching her, just being with her. Every single thing about Julia, he missed. So he sat there, and took it all in.
~~~~~~~~
After a little while, Julia stopped the boat and turned off the engine. She threw a small anchor off the side of the boat before heading back over and plopping down on a couch cushion next to Rafe. She brought her knees up and sat crisscrossed as she dug through her bag.
"Here." She said, pulling out some food, drinks, and a small baggie full of white powder.
"Julia Beth Hudson, did you just kidnap me in the middle of the night, get me onto your boat, and drive me into the middle of the lake, all so you would have a coke buddy?" Rafe asked, smirking sarcastically.
"Yes." Julia answered, dry and serious before responding sarcastically. "1,000 percent yes. Why? Don't you wanna do coke with me, or is that like against the unwritten rules of our breakup?" Rafe smirked at her and rolled his eyes as she poured out some coke onto the table in front of them before taking her wallet out.
"You wanna $1 or $100?" Julia asked.
"Does it matter?"
"I don't know," She shrugged. "The $100 makes me feel fancy and expensive."
"You are expensive." Rafe said, Julia gasped offended and shoved his shoulder making him laugh.
"You get a $1 just for that comment." She said, also getting out her old library card from high school to separate the lines. Once they were separated, Julia rolled up a $100 bill leaned down. She inhaled the white substance with ease, her nostril burning a touch as she took it in. She felt the adrenaline and familiarity of it entering her body and bloodstream, she loved this feeling. She craved this feeling, almost as much as she craved Rafe. She had poured them each two lines, which they both had snorted up with ease, and had still left her with a ton in the baggie.
~~
Julia and Rafe now lay on the floor of the boat on a blanket, just looking up at the night sky. The silence that covered the boat wasn't awkward, it was comfortable.
"Ya know." Rafe started, not breaking eye contact with the sky. "This reminds me of that date we went on a little while back, when I took you on the yacht for the first time." Julia giggled at the memory and Rafe smirked. "And we sat on the top deck all night smoking and looking at the stars."
"And doing... other activities." Julia said looking over with a raised eyebrow, Rafe turned. The two of them now making full on eye contact, it felt good, intense, but in the good way.
"Well, when were we not doing other activities?" Rafe winked, Julia shrugged.
"True, but only because you were insatiable."
"Me?" Rafe asked, pointing to himself, a small smile on his face.
"Yeah."
"No, No, No Ms. Hudson. I think your memories are getting hazy from all the drugs." Julia rolled her eyes but she was still smiling, Rafe turned his body to the side so he would be facing her. "You were the insatiable one."
"No I was not." Julia gasped, placing her hand over her heart dramatically. "How dare you say such things about me Mr. Cameron, I'm a proper lady."
"Hmmm, Okay! Sure!" Rafe scoffed, "Tell yourself that if it makes you feel better." Julia and Rafe broke out into a fit of laughter, before they both settled back down in the comfortable silence.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rafe still laid on his back so he could face her and the sky, and Julia had flipped over to lay on her stomach so she could inch closer to Rafe discreetly. Before he could notice, Julia was resting her head on his shoulder, and when he did notice he didn't care. He moved his arm and wrapped it around her waist, dragging her in so her body was pressed against his side. Julia threw her leg over his lower torso, she searched his face for any kind of displeasure but luckily she didn't find any. After a few minutes Julia started giggling.
"What?" Rafe asked.
"A few hours ago you were telling me to get off your porch, now we're pressed up against each other. My thigh has been over your lower half for a good while, and you still haven't told me to get off." Rafe used the hand that wasn't around Julia's waist and put it on her upper thigh. "Good response." Julia whispered quietly. Rafe reached over and tapped his phone, checking the time.
"Hey, what time should you be home?" He whispered to Julia, she looked up into his blue eyes and shrugged.
"My dad didn't really ask any questions, he was actually super chill. Too chill if you'd ask me. What time is it?"
"It's 3:30." Rafe said.
"In the morning!" Julia exclaimed, sitting up, but not moving her thigh. She had her forearm pressed against Rafe's chest, he rolled his eyes.
"No. In the afternoon."
"How long have we been out here?"
"Few hours." Rafe said, he gently grabbed the back of Julia's neck and laid her head back down on his shoulder.
"We should at least head back to your dock soon." Julia said, Rafe just hummed in response. Neither of them moved, prompting Julia to jab Rafe's side with her elbow.
"I mean you." She jabbed.
"Okay! Okay! Pushy, Pushy." He grumbled, getting up grudgingly. Julia followed him playing with his hand as they walked. Once Rafe got settled at the wheel and had take up the anchor, Julia hugged her arms around his waist and laid her head on his back. They stayed that way until they reached the dock of Tannyhill, and both were forced to come back to the harsh reality of their situation.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"I don't wanna gooo!" Julia whined, shoving everything back into her backpack, Rafe nodded in agreement. "Like what does this mean now?" Julia sighed, Rafe looked at Julia from where he was leaning against the metal pole.
"I don't know, but I know that I can't not be with you." He said, Julia looked up at him, she blushed hard.
"But you can't be with me, apparently." She said, pushing the warm feeling down and putting her focus on getting this blanket into her backpack. Rafe walked over and shoved it down forcefully, zipping the bag. He crouched down in front of Julia, who was sitting on the couch.
"Julia, I love you. Nothing has ever or will ever change that."
"Obviously something did Rafe, or else we'd still be together right now." Rafe sighed, getting up and running a hand through his hair.
"You Know what happened!" He snapped, Julia inhaled sharply.
"I do."
"And you know why... I don't want you involved in anything Julia. It could ruin your entire life, I could ruin your entire life and I don't wanna do that to another person." Julia stood up and walked over to Rafe, taking his head in her hands.
"Rafe, you've never 'ruined' me. You broke my heart." She swallowed some tears. "But believe me, I was ruined long before we met."
"That's not true." He said quietly, taking one of his hands and wrapping it around hers. "You're not ruined at all, you're perfect." Julia laughed and rolled her eyes.
"Sure Rafe, what told you that? Was it my coke addiction, my need for weed, oh! Or was it the fact that I keep running back to the toxic people in my life."
"Was that a self burn?" Rafe smirked.
"It was a good 50-50, but yeah." Rafe and Julia stood there, smirking at each other.
"Julia-" Before Rafe could finish his sentence, Julia leaned up and kissed him. He quickly kissed her back. Their lips blending together in perfect harmony, he wrapped both his hands around Julia's waist, pulling her into his chest. She smirked and pushed herself against him, still holding his face.
They were interrupted by the sudden flash of headlights.
"Wait." Julia said, they both pulled back, gasping for air and looking at the driveway as a car pulled in.
"Who is that?" Julia whispered.
"Looks like my dad." Rafe sighed, Julia squeezed his hand, he didn't let it go and squeezed back.
"Do you wanna go see?" Julia asked softly.
"No." Rafe stated. "But, I don't have any other choice, right?" He laughed sadley, Julia threw the bag over her shoulder.
"I'm coming with you."
"No."
"Yes."
"Julia-"
"Rafe. I am tired of you shutting me out! I don't care about what you've done, that's not who you are! I know who you are, and I love you. And I don't give a shit what you tell me to do, because I don't listen anyway." Rafe rolled his eyes as Julia stepped off the boat, and started walking towards Ward.
"WAIT!" Rafe hissed, catching up to her. He grabbed her hand, and stepped in front of her protectively.
~~~~~~~~~
"Rafe!" Ward hissed, his voice low as he saw his son coming from the dock. "What the hell are you doing? I've been looking for you-" He stopped once Rafe got closer and he saw Julia standing behind Rafe. Their hands interlocked, Ward took a step back in surprise.
"What is she doing here?"
"None of your business." Julia answered before Rafe could, Rafe sighed,
"Well if it concerns you and Rafe it most definitely is my business."
"Why? We're legal adults, it's not like we're doing anything wrong."
"Enough!" Rafe snapped, Julia got quiet and squeezed Rafe's hand. "What's in the truck dad?" Ward looked between Rafe and Julia, before opening the trunk.
"Oh. My. God!" Rafe and Julia gasped.
"Is that a body?" Rafe said, running his empty hand through his hair.
"Rafe." Ward said, calmly, placing a hand on his son's shoulder.
"Who is it?"
"Rafe."
"Who Is It!"
"Gavin!"
"The pilot?" Julia questined.
"Yes. The pilot."
"Oh My god!" Julia cried cupping her hand over her mouth, Rafe stood there in shock.
"Listen, Rafe. He had the gun alright. He had the gun, he was gonna go to the police."
"So You Killed him!" Julia exclaimed.
"You shouldn't even be here right now so keep your mouth shut."
"Hey!" Rafe said, shoving Ward and pointing a finger at him. "Don't talk to her like that." Ward looked utterly shocked at Rafe's actions. He never thought his son would speak against him like that, he also had thought no one could truly ever love his son. Both things were proving to be much more in Ward's way then he would have liked.
"Listen, I don't give a shit right now about whatever the hell you two were doing on that boat. Here's what I do care about, getting rid of this body." Julia threw aside her backpack and nodded.
"I'll get the boat started. Make sure the tarp is wrapped. Rafe get the top half, Ward the bottom." Ward and Rafe both looked at Julia perplexed as she put her hair into a high ponytail, She shrugged. "I watch a lot of Dexter, I'm not a killer. Well I wasn't, before tonight."
"We all have to do hard things." Ward sighed, Julia raised an eyebrow at him, but decided this wasn't the time to pick a fight as she headed back towards the boat.
